I have to say that this is truly amazing.
To add on ... the light you see is what is recorded by the camera sensor and you associate it with being at a location in the object when in fact it is the light that managed to reflect off of / out of the object as it passed through. We perceive that this object has the shape shown based on what is collected at the camera's focal point sensor.
The speaker identifies a correction factor at one point; I wish he would have said more on that.

I remember when I was just a child, I pondered this, though my thought was the beam would have looked more like a spear with a point at the end.
I'd love to see a camera set on, say, the moon, and fired from earth, to see how the laser beam held together.
