Power grid change may disrupt clocks

My internal clock will stay the same it does for daytime ;D

WASHINGTON — A yearlong experiment with the nation's electric grid could mess up traffic lights, security systems and some computers — and make plug-in clocks and appliances like programmable coffeemakers run up to 20 minutes fast.
"A lot of people are going to have things break and they're not going to know why," said Demetrios Matsakis, head of the time service department at the U.S. Naval Observatory, one of two official timekeeping agencies in the federal government.
Since 1930, electric clocks have kept time based on the rate of the electrical current that powers them. If the current slips off its usual rate, clocks run a little fast or slow. Power companies now take steps to correct it and keep the frequency of the current — and the time — as precise as possible.

Where to begin?
They pulled the same shit with ethanol, they were clueless when they introduced it into our gasoline, and now they want to do the same to electricity.
There are so many things that won't give out right away that are frequency sensitive, but many products are designed to work between certain parameters, or frequencies, over time they will simply give out.

Another argument against solar and wind was made in this article as well, see if you can spot it.
But that wasn't their intention...
In the future, more use of renewable energy from the sun and wind will mean more variations in frequency on the grid, McClelland said. Solar and wind power can drop off the grid with momentary changes in weather. Correcting those deviations is expensive and requires instant backup power to be always at the ready, he said.
The test makes sense and should not cause too much of a hassle for people, said Jay Apt, a business professor and director of the Electricity Industry Center at Carnegie Mellon University.
But Tom O'Brian, who heads the time and frequency division at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, expects widespread effects.

He said there are alternatives if people have problems from the test: The federal government provides the official time by telephone and on the Internet.

Could this not produce an effect like a brown out?

Possibly, but not probably.

The bigger problem would be with sensitive electronics, frequency can reek havoc in certain electronics, not so much household items, but labs that have equipment that requires exact cycles, possibly giving false readings.
Other things like diodes and tiny capacitors in earlier electronics can prematurely wear out.
even silicon chips don't like higher frequencies.

Products were engineered to run on 60hz, change that, and the whole equation is in jeopardy.
Drills and power tools don't really care, and most electronics run on DC power, so their voltage has been transformed, but thing like older TV sets would up and quit.
This is why a lot of European products don't work here and vice versa.

Frequency sensitive relays are one piece of the equation, but again, most home don't have them.
Airlines is another, all planes are designed with exacting frequencies, but they use their own power supply, luckily, but that doesn't mean that a lot of that equipment isn't being appleid somewhere else.

Bottom line is they are running a big risk playing with the grid, when all they have to do is build a bunch of nuke plants and be done with this happy horse shit.

Maybe someone else knows of some products on the mkt that are sensitive to all of this...

Nah. Brownouts are amperage drops. The basics of electricity: volts, amps, ohms are not affected by changes in frequency.

The short answer is that anything that depends on the frequency of the AC supplying it will be affected. Clocks that rely on electric motors will not keep good time. In general, assuming that all other aspects of the power supply remain stable, the lower the frequency, the slower the motor will turn, and vice versa. Frequency is completely independent of the volts, amps and ohms we're used to dealing with.

Thanks, all I know I will not lose sleep over it at my age.  ;D

I can't find any links to back this up but on one of the mailing lists I subscribe to was the news that the test had been put off as some unanticipated problems emerged from the public comments.

You could say this is akin to Ca. pulling sulfur out of diesel before the market had a chance to prepare for it, like the damage done to fuel systems by ethanol.
They never allowed the market place to make adjustments before hand.

Thank you young man.

At my age if it were not for my computer and cell phone, I would not ever know what day or month it is.   I am now working on forgetting what year it is.   ;D

I must say Ca. has been a testing grounds for runamuck thinking.

Uh, you're welcome although I think you're making an assumption my birth date puts the lie to.
