Title: New sensor detects water contamination in real time

Hello Survival Tips...

Currently, if you want to check water supplies for the presence of toxic bacteria, you have to take a water sample and then culture it in a lab over several days. In the meantime, it's impossible to say if the water source is safe to use. A group of students from the Technical University of Denmark, however, have created a sensor that they say can detect bacteria in water instantly, on the spot.

The sensor is expected to be commercially available sometime next year.

Living or dead bacteria ... that is the question.

Might be really useful for testing water after filtering too!   Could even put the screws to some of these companies that say their filter takes out 99.999% of harmful bacteria, but... really only filters out certain size bugs.  I still trust distilling the most.

Yeah, boiling and reverse osmosis is all I'll trust. These claims they make? That's only with a new filter, but as I've discussed in the past, giardia cysts can grow right through the filter, breeding and splitting as they go.
Unless you have an activated filter, that shit will eventually make it through. Nothing beats boiling when it comes to killing.

Boiling is good.  Converting water to steam, and leaving the crap behind to re-condense the vapor back to water - I prefer that, when I got the choice.

I do wonder if this kind of sensor would give a false reading, if the water contained sterilized (dead) bugs.

Yeah, it might be nice knowing the water you filtered is clean, but beyond that, I wouldn't trust it on my life.

Listening to some guy at work worried about Fluorine & Chlorine in the water like it's horrible (sure it tastes bad & makes me burp acid), but he'd be the first guy to drink out of a spring, forgetting a deer & bear pissed in it.  "Ahhh....  Can't beat that ice cold, fresh spring water, you know beer companies cherish this stuff!"

Worst case of Giardia I ever got was up above Tahoe at around ten thousand foot elevation, little spring running above ground for about 300', but By God, something had shit in the water, the lab actually wrote on the slip to the doc, that it was the most concentrated specimen in the labs history.
That was back during the 80s drought, about two droughts back.
Thing about droughts is they draw wildlife to a single source of water for miles around and one case can infect an entire forest full of critters, me included.
