Title: My printer had a problem.
Post by: walkstall on October 22, 2016, 06:21:59 AM
My printer said it had a print head problem and it would not let me do anything.  So I check in town at the place I got it to see if there was some thing I could do.

Turns out the printer was recalled for the very problem.  So I get a new printer.  Every thing set up ok but for printing from my computer.  Took me 5 hrs. to fix the problem.   :cursing:   So I turned off the Firewall again as I had it off for the download only and it printed.  I turned the Firewall back on again and it printed ok.  Not sure what turning it off and back on again did, but it's working.

So much for the days of plug and play.

Why is it with all the advances in technology printers were not included?

For the same reason that we old farts hate buying new products.
The letters/numbers keep getting smaller and they just assume we should know all the new freakin acronyms kids are using today.

I swear, I bought a new security system, and these idiots claim it's plug and play, assuming I know the additional 36 steps required to get to the (PAP) plug and play point.
More acronyms in the last year, and instead of actually spelling out the full meaning, they just assume we all know BLRT, (Borderline Response Time) or or LOS (Line Of Sight), or my favorite, AWTL, (Above Wildlife Trigger Line).
Oh yeah, I finally went to their FAQ site and found where other bewildered OF's  (Old Farts) POAKFWTS Pissed Off At Kids For Writing This Fuckin Shit.

Oh, and did I mention these instructions were written in German, translated by Indians speaking Punjabi into Chinese, translated one more time by Japanese for the American market?
LOT? That would be (Lost In Translation)

I found a better security system. I assume it's better, I've yet to take it out of the box and return it to the store. :glare:

They make there money on the ink!  Not the printers.

That's for sure! I guess the technology goes into security for prevention of generic cartridges being used.

You can take the old cartridges in and have them refilled for a third  of the price of a new one.  Cartridges last me about 2 years.

Which stores will do that? I usually buy at Staples.

B/W refills are usually a safe bet.  Color ...oh boy!  We shell out $1600 for our color cartridges set, just 4 of them.
When the color must match previously printed work, refills have never come close to matching OEM, with Color Laser printers.

I understand, I do not use a Laser printer.   I only use my printer for in home use.  Almost all my printing is in black, I don't do charts and graphs now other then for old friends that I e-mail then to for there use.

For a CHEAP B/W Laser printer, with cartridges costing under $30 ea.

Look for an old HP 4000 or HP 4050.

It was a very popular printer for small Businesses, Doctors offices, Dentists, etc., not the fastest thing, but built to last - and there's a ton of them out there.  HP's universal print driver or the original HP 4000 drivers are still supported by every version of windows.   In my travels for work, I see them everywhere, +20 yrs old, still in use, and the parts are easy to come by - no Ink to smear, dry out, no fading of the printed material.

For 11x17" printing, HP 5000 is another cheap one, buuuuuuutttttttt.... it's temperamental.
Anything in the 8.5x11" or 8.5x14" (letter or legal), HP 4000 series is a nice unit.

One other thing, newer printers have "chipped" cartridges!  Surprise!  they say their out-of-toner, before they actually are, thanks to a chip on the end... you have to replace the chip when you get the cartridge refilled - and the stinking chip is in the $125 range.

Bubble jet printers are a waste of money. High volume demands a laser-printer for lowest per-page copying costs.

Laser really is the way to go. Sure color looks great, but honestly, how often does anyone use their printer beyond text?
I spend more on dried out cartridges than I do on printers. Hell, it was cheaper to buy a new printer than it was to replace the cartridges on my last printer.

High volume...  Hmm... I use a pack of printer paper about every 3 to 4 years now that I no longer work.  (now that I no longer work outside the house, the honey do list just don't stop)

Matters not, I print a page per year, and the last time I printed one was a decade ago. The wife usually does it at work. I'm not even certain ours even works.

You have to turn it on to see if it will work.

Last time I tried to print a page, the thing screwed up the entire page, and that was the third time I used it in as many years, that was a decade ago now that I think about it.

  I have a printer that's over 20 years old that I use for back up.  I used it on my wife's machine about a month ago.   My new printer is wireless so I will put it away again.  I can not print from both computer to the new printer.

LOL !

I keenly remember the 1980's when it took me an entire Christmas Vacation to install a CD-ROM on my 486 !

But I succeeded.

I would use a Louisville Slugger on the printer.  Try to use a wooden one.  It will completely solve all the printer issues your having with it.

I did that years ago with a Pocket PC.  I was on the golf course and was trying to play golf while something important was going on at the office.  I was so mad that I couldn't take a damn day off without the place seemingly fall apart, and I was playing horrible.  My Pocket PC kept sticking and I couldn't make a call, so I just lost it and propped it up between 2 tees and just onloaded on it with a 3-wood.

Saw something similar, where some guy was cursing into his phone, pull it from his ear, grip it with both hands, fight with it, yell into it, and finally let out a loud scream of frustration and threw it across the lake.
Damned thing nearly cleared the other side of the lake skipping on the water, and yes, he calmed down quickly.

I don't know what the issue was, may have been a cheating wife for all I know, but getting rid of the phone seemed to solve it.

It should be routine therapy...  feels great.  Just remember to have your contacts backed up.
