I watched it launch... It's freakin' amazing what's happening in the space and tech world.  This one is going to bring back samples from Mars.

I have always loved this! Now we have a situation where China is using our secret data, which they stole, to race us to Mars.
I seem to remember back when we allowed the USSR to steal some of our plans for the space shuttle which they never got off the ground, so to speak, plans we ahem..., augmented a tiny bit?

Wonder if Feinstein got them the real plans, or were we a step ahead of her?

I would really to understand the safety measures that are going to be in place for analyzing the Martian matter they are planning to bring to earth.

My understanding is Moon rocks were one thing, as the pervasive view is the moon and earth collided and therefore exchanged material so likely nothing found on the moon would have been hostile to life on earth.

Mars is a different story.  We are going there to find life and to bring back samples for analysis on earth.  I would think that is a new class of risk.  I am sure we have protocols but I simply would like to understand them.

There is a thread under the movie sub forum in regard to the movie The Andromeda Strain, which is the sort of procedures I hope we have in place but given what I know of our Government I remain jaundice.
Blessed be the Lord my rock, who trains my hands for war, and my fingers to fight.

Though many years off, the samples will be sealed in small tubes. I'm sure containment won't really be an issue once on earth, a lot is at stake, considering cross contamination would completely destroy any samples to be studied.

You can read more about it here.
"Those samples tubes are part of a Sample and Caching System, which is one of our biggest engineering developments for this mission," Steltzner said. "We get to Mars largely like the Curiosity rover got to Mars, but we need to do something very different once we're on Mars. We must take these core samples, seal them hermetically and sterilely, and then produce a cache of samples for eventual return to Earth."

Here's something that was taken to the moon and brought back. Hard to believe if not for these , we would not have made it to the moon.

I have a pretty good idea the current group of astronauts are well versed in the slide rule. They need to be in the event communications go down, or there's a computer failure from a small EMP from the sun.
I wonder how many kids even know what a slide rule is these days?
