As I have mentioned Solar got me a Kindle for my birthday this year.  :-* On Christmas Day I was reading and went to get my second  ;) ;) cup of coffee.  When I returned and turned it on I had a line down the right side of my Kindle. :o  Thinking it was something when I opened it I shut it off and restarted it.  Now I had a line down the right and the entire upper left corner was gone.  :o :o  We went online and read that sometimes rebooting it works.  Nope now there was a line, the upper corner was gone and part of the menu was frozen on the screen.  :o :o :o

The following Monday I emailed Amazon/Kindle.  They asked for a good time to call me and since I said now....my phone rang.  8) The nice guy on the other end asked me what it did and then basically said we don't even try to fix this at this point.  He confirmed my address and they sent a new one to me overnight.  They also gave me the UPS tag and directions to send my old one back and told me how to transfer all of my books I already had to the new Kindle I received. ;D ;D

Now that's what I call service.  The warranty is good for 1 year.

Sounds like it turned out well for you, ST! Cool!

But the behemoth Amazon ain't always so responsive...

A couple months ago, I bought a used laser printer. (Commercial-grade Brother, VERY nice, $400 printer for $20 -- thanks, Craigslist!) I needed a toner cartridge, so crazy me, I searched Amazon using my printer model number. (What was I thinking?) A page jumped up and promised the toner cartridge of my dreams for less than $20! Insanely, I ordered it forthwith! When it arrived (quite promptly, shipped by one of their "associate" vendors), I tried to stuff it into my printer, but it wouldn't go.

I dragged out the paperwork and sat down in front of the 'puter to do a little research. Seems the cartridge they sent me didn't fit my printer because... it's the wrong cartridge for my printer. In fact, the web page I ordered it from lists ELEVEN different printers that this cartridge will not work with.

I contacted the third-party vendor -- through Amazon -- and explained the situation, and the vendor advised me to send the cartridge back to them, at my expense, for a partial refund -- a restocking fee would apply because I had been so stupid as to order the wrong thing. I contacted them again and served up some ugly, pointy words (I know that's probably hard for many of you to believe...) and they came through with a prepaid shipping label and a more polite tone.

As it stands now, the vendor who sold me the wrong thing has refunded my purchase price in full, BUT NOT the shipping charges I paid to have the wrong thing delivered to my door. I ordered and received the correct toner cartridge from a different third-party Amazon vendor. The one that sent me the wrong thing has finally learned to make nice with me -- after I left some rather uncomplimentary feedback on Amazon.com. And we're all still waiting for Amazon to correct the wording on the page I originally ordered from. I have promised the first vendor that I'll withdraw my rips when the listing is fixed. We'll see... After nearly two months, nothing has happened...

Tbone - I have heard similar stories.  I think the main difference is I was dealing directly with Amazon not one of the third parties.  Like you I am always a little skeptical when it comes to one of them.

Unfortunately I had a similar problem buying from a store.  We have a puppy who likes to chew through the chargers for my laptops.  Once Best Buy sold me the wrong charger (For a laptop I had purchased from them..charging me $100) and then I had the same thing happen at Wal-Mart (we even read the box together and thought it was right.).  At least I didn't have to deal with shipping and all that.  Just had to drive back to the store - not real convenient but cheaper I am sure.   :)

Shooter, I have a sneaky feeling it had something to do with the voltage of the battery.
It was near dead when the problem occurred, she had been using it a lot for over two weeks without a charge I think.

My theory is based on current, as the voltage falls in the battery, the current increases because the unit is trying to get all the power it can, in turn, causing the connections to the screen to become hot and fail.

Yes, it's only theory, but if your wife charges once a week, it just might prevent this from occurring.

She will love it if she is a book reader.  I have downloaded quite a few free ebooks.  Classics such as Anna Karenina, Little House on the Prairie, and even some old cookbooks (If you ever need to know how to dress a deer or boar.)  I love that I can put the books into folders and keep them as groups.  There is so much you can do and I am just getting started....
