Italian Supervolcano Under Naples Is Waking Up; Poses Possible Threat to Half a Million Residents, Scientists Say

A supervolcano under the Italian city of Naples appears to be waking up and may pose a threat to some 500,000 people, according to a new study.

Italian and French scientists say data from the Campi Flegrei supervolcano indicates the situation may be reaching a critical point.

For the first time, the scientists say they have identified a threshold beyond which rising magma under the Earth’s surface could trigger "an accelerating deformation that can ultimately culminate in rock failure and eruption," according to a study published Tuesday in the scientific journal Nature Communications.
