(This is my first time here in ages, so I'm not sure if there is already a thread on this)

In the light of the exposure of the NSA surveillance and such, I decided to look into measures I could use to protect my privacy. I figured I should share for those unfamiliar.

  • Tor
(The Onion Router) This free anonymity suite allows one to connect to a global network of thousands of relays, using several layers of encryption and concealing the location of the user. (For more on Onion routing, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Onion_routing) As well as concealment, Tor allows users to access many hidden services under the .onion domain, many illegal, some practical. These range from Jihadist sites and the most horrific porn imaginable to people simply wanting to protect their privacy.  I am aware that using such a service makes you of interest to the NSA. http://www.ieee-security.org/TC/SP2013/papers/4977a080.pdf This research suggests that Tor is weakening, but seeing as I am not a terrorist, nor a pedophile it's not of much concern.

DISCLAIMER: I DO NOT PROMOTE THE USE OF ILLICIT SERVICES

  • I2P
Anonymous overlay network, currently in beta.
Allows user to send e-mail that self destruct after a set period and prevents screenshots.
All secure e-mail providers.

Anyone know of any other good stuff or know of any issues with the ones I posted?

The "Deep Web" area you describe is drawing more attention to Tor, but to get there also requires a Tor-specific version of Firefox, and knowledge of how to set up a "sandbox," a virtual-reality safety-zone to protect your browsing in the truly lethal areas of the undeclared Internet.

Roughly .002% of the Internet has actually been indexed by Google and other outfits. The true hackers are out there and even opening their link without protecting yourself is dangerous in the extreme. Mere firewalls fall down instantly and they'll own your PC or mobile in a (*cough*) Flash...faster than you can swallow some Java......

Also the NSA is keeping all your messages if they are encrypted, the NSA is keeping them until they can decrypt them.   If the NSA isn't sure about anything, it can keep your data.  All your communications are unprotected.

I have only browsed the deep web  a few times, when I did I was outside a coffee shop running it from a USB stick  with Sandboxie. I never upload or do make any interactions with other people, so I reckon I'm alright.

I have the answer!!!!  --- LINK REMOVED BY TAXED ---
AWESOME services based in Switzerland.  Email, VPN and DigitalSafe, all loaded with tons of encryption in a Tier 3 data center.  Check them out!  Can also resell their services and make money (not a MLM).  They seem to be very conservative, trying to help Americans regain their Internet privacy.  Check it out!

That's all fine and good.
Now if you could only find a way to get on the internet without using a server! :sneaky:
Bingo!
That's exactly what I was wondering, it's like carrying bags of money through the worst part of town to the bank, marked bags of money, right on the bag, and expecting to make it to the bank unmolested.

Unless you can have the data delivered carrier pigeon to Switzerland, there is no way to keep it from getting hacked along the way.

Wow you guys are ruthless!  I am definitely NOT a spammer, oh my gosh, are you kidding me?!!  I am a law abiding citizen just wanting to stand up for my 4th amendment rights and help others who feel the same and want to protect their Online Privacy.  This was my first post on this site and I hope this is not representative of how people are treated.  I was simply responding to the topic.  The correct link is:  -- POOF!! Looks like some people need educating.  Hope this site will help.

P.S.  Do you always treat young ladies this way?  And sorry, you're suspicions were wrong...

YOU did not specify your Gender in your profile.
But being a young Lass you would be treated the same I am sure.
You also need to know how the government and the internet works to understand what is being said.

OK, glad to know you're not a spammer, but as was pointed out, there is no way to avoid having your privacy intruded upon.
The NSA and their secret court saw to that.
