I would love to have a 3D printer, mostly to print hobby material. Too bad they are very expensive.

Wait a couple of years, unless Govt has anything to say, otherwise, they'll be under a grand in no time, you can already get a hobby type for under a thousand now.

3-D printing goes from sci-fi fantasy to reality.

"We're going to see innovation happening at a much higher rate, introduction of products at a much higher rate," said DeGrange. "We live in an on-demand world now, and we'll see production schedules are going to be greatly compressed."

Airplane mechanics could print a replacement part on the runway. A dishwasher repairman could make a new gasket in his service truck. A surgeon could print a knee implant custom-designed to fit a patient's body.

But the military, D'Aveni said, is likely to be among the first major users of 3-D printers, because of the urgency of warfare.

Oh my. Anyone who thinks our never-sleeping, rapacious, all-knowing federal government won't step in and at least TRY to eliminate -- certainly regulate -- technology like this is wearin' jammies. 3-D printing is a game-changer. I've seen a video of somebody firing a pistol that was created completely with a 3-D printer, and needed only a simple bit of steel for a firing pin. Do you think BATFE will look the other way on this?

In a way, I look forward to the battle, because it's going to intensify the fire that's been lit under America by the IRS boondoggle. BIG BROTHER is watching you, and is after you, and will ruin your life. The new battleground for government control freaks is software.

Staples will begin carrying 3D printers, and Amazon has a whole section devoted to 3D printer related items. Here's the general wrap-up....

And of course I'm reminded of the film Weird Science when news of X-rated 3-D printed items gets mentioned....and it is. Take the production of vibrators, and the receiving-units designed to test them.....

As any Star Trek fanboy knows, Data didn't HAVE to be a boy.......

Become to the brave new world of replicators.

Leading 3-D printer firms to merge in $403M deal

snip~
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Stratasys, a leading maker of 3-D printers, is buying another 3-D printer manufacturer, MakerBot, for $403 million in stock.

Stratasys Ltd. said Wednesday the acquisition will enable it to offer affordable desktop 3-D printers. MakerBot, whose machines are priced around $2,000 to $3,000 and are aimed at the "prosumer" market, sells direct to buyers over its website. In contrast, Stratasys makes machines priced $10,000 to $600,000 mostly to industrial clients through resellers.
