I was serious, I'd use it, but it really makes gaming hard, like an obstacle course or hunt for progs so as to make it work with games.
I just don't care to do all that damned background work, I just want to plug in a disk and play.
Too old for this stuff anymore, I have more important things to do, like sitting on the deck watching grass grow.

Plug and play or it ain't the way. Too many of my precious and pathetically outdated programs would probably not play well with Minty Mossback or whatever it is.

Speaking of, what are the gamers saying nowadays?  Is there any development momentum towards Linux at all?

Sadly, the big names have yet to go there, and I suspect it has a lot to do with X-box/Microsoft controlling interests.

Does X-Box compete with desktop gaming?  It seems to me X-Box is something they do really well.  To my way of thinking, why not make the X-Box the PC, where you can do everything, and just ditch the Windows side of things?  Am I right, or off track do you think?

Money. That's what it comes down to, when Xbox releases a game, it waits a year before they release it to the PC mkt, a mkt dominated by Windows, not Linux.

Wow.  So, they get the PC gamers excited for the rollout?  I am so clueless about that side of things.  I need to get up to speed.

Regarding the quoted item above..... What would I need to get Microsoft Word to work on Linux? No substitute programs are acceptable: certain background coding must be carried through, not simply anything that saves in .DOC.

You don't just save something in DOC format.  The byte ordering of the file would be a legit Word Document.

LibreOffice isn't a "substitute program"; it's a full blown office suite that I've been using for a while.  It can read and write DOC files just fine.  If you want to keep using Word, then you can purchase a Windows upgrade, and then purchase Word.  There is nothing you are doing in Word right now that you can't do in LibreOffice.
