Title: Does anybody know

Why a drinking glass that had been sitting upside down in a dish drainer for over night, all of a sudden square up explodes... it just happened in my kitchen.   No cooling off issues, did not get touched. It square up spontaneously exploded.
I am perplexed to say the least.

Thing that make you go hmmm, Microwave running or Sun light come through the window radio playing/TV?  Earthquake coming?

I don't own a microwave, haven't for 10 yrs. No sunlight,  no tv in the kitchen.  Percolator a good 3' away.   Drinking glass totally cool upside down in drain basket inside the sink, not touched or tapped.
I gotta go clean the glass out of the sink, been searching for a why and everything so far says it randomly happens on cool down.

Sort of a guess here...
Chrystals cool unevenly, and tension is created across differing thicknesses.  As for metals, beating on it with a hammer as it cools can relieve the tension in cast iron (my blacksmith days), and keep it from cracking... sometimes. 

As for glass, as it ages, micro cracking (which we experience in the fiber optic world), is everwhere... it's just a matter of time before the heating & cooling cycling creates enough tension to make those little cracks big.  Curiously, fiber optic cable does not like water... makes it extremely brittle.  My guess, is the tension is already present, with the micro-cracking, one way to relieve it is breaking.

Unseen micro cracking.  Makes sense..... the untouched by anything causes exploding totally cooled is just plain weird.

That's what I was thinking, that it had been scalded hot, maybe placed on a wire support to dry that may have held pressure on the inside of the glass pushing out on the walls of the glass as it cooled, and possibly already having micro fractures, just up and popped as it contracted.
That, or a pellet through an open source, orrrrrrr, just maybe, a Freakin Ghost now haunts the area and got frustrated because it couldn't turn on the water for a drink. Hey, it could happen, ya know :biggrin:

The micro cracks make sense.  But here's my perplexing thought.   The micro cracks need hot or cold.  That's the problem,  normal drinking glass, clean, standing upside down, on the plastic coated rack, inside the sink, all night long.  No liquids in it , no heat source at all. Not touched, moved or tapped.  Just square up exploded.  Everything I have read for hours says micro cracks, tensile cracks need hot or cold , with liquid to explode.   
There has to be a science reason,,,  room temperature, totally dry glasses don't just explode.  There has to be a reason...
Well , there better be a reason, it's gonna make me crazy...

But you washed them in hot water, right? So as they cool, those tiny fractures are under tremendous stress as the glass was made under stress and as nature does, wants to return to a freer state.
So the glass was sitting upright all alone, not upside down, no glasses stacked inside of it?

Hell, it sounds more like something came through an open source, window, door, hole etc. and hit it direct. Look for a small rock, maybe a neighbor was mowing?
I find the chances of a pebble coming through a tiny hole feasable, but odds of chance are astronomical, so buy a lotery ticket, I'll take my 20% cut when you win. :smile:

It's very possible the glass was poorly made. Curious, were the pieces in the shape of a dropped glass, like long shards, or was it more like smaller pieces and no long shards?
I'm wondering if some form of tempering occurred during manufacturing causing it unnecessary stress for the rest of it's existence.
Look up tempered glass process and you'll see what I'm getting at.

I always marvel at these occurences, where nature doesn't act the way it should, or the way we think it should.
From sinkholes, meteorites, doors opening and closing on their own to volcanoes, some things just surprise the shit out of us sometimes without explanation.

If this were the 16th century, they'd have burned you at the stake for witchery. :biggrin:

Yep washed the night before, straight hot rinse under the faucet. Stood alone not touching anything. Kahplooey at 530 a.m.
I found something.   Tempered/toughened glass over time will develope stress cracks inside the walls.  Some you can see some are to small.  Sometimes they just spontaneously just explode , for no reason.  like a glass top table, that just explodes for no apparent reason.
I found that a few minutes ago.   Makes sense now.
It exploded like sledge hammering a windshield. But lots of small pebble chunks, the big one was about the size of a small nail clipper...
Was weird.  Still is weird lol.  I also just went thru the cabinet and tossed 3 that weren't clear.  Used a flashlight to see better.

Ah yes, I remember a recall recently on glass table tops that apparently weren't tempered correctly and they were exploding all over the country, IKEA I think.
Yeah, sounds like a filed quality issue, so yeah, good idea to toss them all if they aren't heirlooms.
