Looks like some hot new computer and solar cells coming down the road.

2 professors in UK win Nobel Prize in physics.

By KARL RITTER and LOUISE NORDSTROM, AP

STOCKHOLM — Two Russian-born scientists shared the Nobel Prize in physics on Tuesday for "groundbreaking experiments" with the thinnest, strongest material known to mankind — a carbon vital for the creation of faster computers and transparent touch screens.

Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov, two professors at the University of Manchester in Britain, demonstrated the exceptional properties of graphene, a form of carbon that is only one atom thick, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said.

Experiments with graphene could lead to the development of new superstrong materials and innovative electronics, the academy said in announcing the 10 million kronor ($1.5 million) award.

"Graphene transistors are predicted to be substantially faster than today's silicon transistors and result in more efficient computers," the academy said in the citation. "Since it is practically transparent and a good conductor, graphene is suitable for producing transparent touch screens, light panels and maybe even solar cells."

Looks like Admin created that forum for ya, Big Guy. To save time, call it the Linux Forum.  ;D

Hey, I can hijack a thread like the best of 'em.....

;D ;D  That last part put me on the floor.  We've got one maroon over there who deserves to get locked into The Pit and able to see nowhere else.

But---back to Linux. (Hijack continues.)

Unfortunately, Linux does not offer full-time tech support, and the programs which DO play well with it (such as OpenOffice.org, a huge file by itself) require you to use more hard drive space for it as well as for Word (which doesn't play well with .ODT documents).

Fully 70% to 80% of the world's computers do not use Linux.

If you have a stand alone or just for the net.  Linux is great, but if your working with other people or other company that don't have it then you need Windows.  I do some work sometimes for the farmers around also and they all have Windows both on line and off line.  If you have a tech person in your back pocket then a Linux is ok.  lolol

Gee. Can't imagine why this thread isn't getting moved to that new Tech forum!  ;D

Imagine my joy trying to coordinate documents saved in more than one OS. Been there. A whole year of archivals, and to read them I need an OS that eats up monstrous space.

I respectfully disagree!

ANY computer that connects to the internet uses Linux, or some form of it, immediately, automatically, and without option. Linux and its children RUN the internet.

OpenOffice can read and write Microsoft Word documents (*.doc), which 100% of MS users can work with, as well as 100% linux users.

You can totally use Linux in a Windows environment.  I have for years.
