There is no "start" button where you can browse everything installed on the computer. You move the pointer to where the start button should be and a small icon appears that includes all your apps, programs..everything. Click on that and then you see a full screen of apps. Click on the desktop icon (you'll have no idea what that is unless someone tells you) and only then can you find pictures, get on the internet etc. BTW, While I was typing this the time in large typeface popped up twice as well as several icons I have yet to identify.

It's almost like a poorly designed game of "Find the Invisible Waldo" with traps and surprises along the way, and watch out for the evil weather predictor, he will stop you dead in your tracks.

I thought I would update my nightmare. I like to download music and play it on my laptop. On every other laptop I just double click and the computer will open up that specific song on my my favorite media player. Not so with Windows 8. If I double click the Windows 8 opens up a phantom player (full screen) and begins playing the song with no controls (pause, replay, shuffle etc). I can't stop it. Even if I close everything. I have to restart the laptop to get out of it.

Methinks Win 8 will quickly go the way of Vista. It is widely and deservedly hated. It's an operating system designed for those with no interest in operating a system. It's the software version of Big Brother.

I actually like 7. And of course, YES, 98 was the best, but that's so many generations ago, it'll never come back. (Actually, I ran WinMe for years and LOVED it, but I appreciated, unlike its detractors did, that is was just 98 with some very cute lipstick and earrings.)

Taxed has tried repeatedly to turn me on to Linus' thing, and I've tried. But DAMN! It's a lot prettier and smarter than it used to be, but I don't want to have to learn Commodore Basic all over again just to install a driver. I don't care for a developer community with the mentality that you SHOULD HAVE ALREADY LEARNED their non-English argot just to get your printer going. (Anyone who complains about poor hardware support from Microsoft should try any version of Linux -- you will come running back.) Also, I've learned the hard way that trying Linux -- at least Ubuntu 10 and 12.04 -- as a dual-boot OS on a Win XP system is a VERY bad idea. Linux makes unauthorized changes to Windows files, rendering them useless.

Linux may be a great thing as a sole OS, but I don't recommend it as part of a dual-boot system.
