Anyone using Windows 8 and having issues?

Methinks Win 8 will quickly go the way of Vista. It is widely and deservedly hated. It's an operating system designed for those with no interest in operating a system. It's the software version of Big Brother.

I actually like 7. And of course, YES, 98 was the best, but that's so many generations ago, it'll never come back. (Actually, I ran WinMe for years and LOVED it, but I appreciated, unlike its detractors did, that is was just 98 with some very cute lipstick and earrings.)

Taxed has tried repeatedly to turn me on to Linus' thing, and I've tried. But DAMN! It's a lot prettier and smarter than it used to be, but I don't want to have to learn Commodore Basic all over again just to install a driver. I don't care for a developer community with the mentality that you SHOULD HAVE ALREADY LEARNED their non-English argot just to get your printer going. (Anyone who complains about poor hardware support from Microsoft should try any version of Linux -- you will come running back.) Also, I've learned the hard way that trying Linux -- at least Ubuntu 10 and 12.04 -- as a dual-boot OS on a Win XP system is a VERY bad idea. Linux makes unauthorized changes to Windows files, rendering them useless.

Linux may be a great thing as a sole OS, but I don't recommend it as part of a dual-boot system.

T, this is the most insane post I've ever read. What printer are you using that Ubuntu doesn't support?  Windows with better hardware support than Linux?  You have flipped your lid...

My lid was never too tightly screwed on the first place.  :tounge: :tounge: :tounge:

But please note that I did NOT complain about Linux's lack of support for any particular hardware. What I said was that INSTALLING the drivers requires a PhD in Linus Torvalds's deepest mental achievements. "Grub" to me is a little worm I use for fishing, and "Lilo" is what the supermarket mags call Lindsay Lohan.

In any case, it's less a matter of Linux supporting hardware than it is the opposite direction: hardware manufacturers supporting Linux. Many hardware makers never bother to sync their stuff with Linux, leaving the open-source community to pick up the slack. Good luck with that.

But you'll be gratified to know, sir, that I haven't stopped trying! Only last week, I tried to install Ubuntu 12.04 via DVD (yep, it's too fat for a mere CD now) onto an elderly PIII system with a 30GB zero-filled HD... and the whole thing collapsed into an endless loop, with the the hard drive humming blissfully along for more than an hour-and-a-half before I killed the power. (A subsequent install of WinXP Pro on the same machine succeeded without a hitch.)

I'll keep trying, man!

Mine is like one of those V-8 tabs... it keeps it air-tight, but easy to rip off...

Have you tried proprietary products lately, like Windows 8?

I guess you are having some strange issues with it..... Have you tried Xbuntu?  It requires a lot less resource...

I hear you about installing device drivers.  It happens, but it doesn't happen on any modern devices that I've run into.  Everything has been plug and play and works fine for me.  However, NVIDA cards occasionally cause me grief.

No, I haven't tried Xbuntu. I'm somewhat enamored with Ubuntu, mainly because I actually had it running on another machine and I really liked the GUI. Yeah, I know, that's not why you're "supposed" to like an OS, but there it is. Rampant rumors aside, I am human.

I'll give it a shot and see where it leads.

My goal, by the way, is to get my EXTREMELY low-income neighbor and friend set up with something that will give him internet access on a legacy machine. One problem I'm not sure how to solve is that his MagicJack phone service -- which just barely runs on the XP system he has now -- apparently won't run at all under any version of Linux. It's a pretty fair example of what I was talking about -- hardware, or in this case firmware, makers who don't/won't modify their product to work with Linux.
