ancestry.com: is it "all that"..or is it fool's gold?

                         I ask you members in a position to know anything about this product......to provide me the truth as to how good a product this is.  I sincerely want to research my family....but...I don't want to throw my money down a rabbit hole.
                       therefore....please come back with your unbiased truth concerning this product.  I need to know.  thank you.

First off, I am not a member at this time. I've been looking at it seriously in recent weeks, mainly as a way to pass the time on these long winter nights. (The cat's really not that much fun.)

Like many online services, Ancestry.com started out free, probably because that was the only practically way for its owners to build the kind of database that would attract paying customers. Of course, it's been a pay service for years now. From articles I've read about genealogy sites, there is general agreement that Ancestry.com is the Cadillac of the genre.

Don't know where to send you, but I know the church of Later day saints does this for free.

That's it.
They came to my dad about 10 years ago when he was in his 90s and did his for nothing, these were young missionaries doing what they do, and he was shocked to see our history going back to the Vikings.

They never asked for a penny.
