TOKYO — Toyota is recalling 1.53 million Lexus, Avalon and other models, mostly in the U.S. and Japan, for brake fluid and fuel pump problems, the latest in a string of quality lapses for the world's No. 1 automaker.

Toyota Motor Corp. said Thursday it will call back for repairs about 740,000 cars in the U.S. and 599,000 in Japan. The remainder are in Europe and other markets around the world.

The majority of vehicles this time around need to be fixed for a problem with the brake master cylinder which could lead to weaker braking power, said spokesman Paul Nolasco in Tokyo. Some models in Japan and elsewhere — but not in North America — have an electrical problem with the fuel pump which could cause the engine to stall, he said.

My primary exposure to Toyota vehicles has been my ownership of a 1986 Chevrolet Nova -- the one Paul Harvey christened the "Toy-let." Made in Japan, assemble in California.

Overall, a DAMN good car! I put something like 245,000 miles on it, then sold it to a gal in Sandusky who was so happy with it she sent me Christmas cards for years afterward.

I never had brake problems, but it did have its quirks.

It ate a muffler a year, no matter what. After the first few, I went to my local NationWise (back then) and bought a $19.95 lifetime warranty muffler for it. Those guys got real used to seeing me wander in the door every spring with a rusty muffler in one hand and a dog-eared receipt in the other.

I had to replace the heater core I think three times, a PHENOMENAL record. Until I bought that car, I don't think I'd replaced more than one or two heater cores in my LIFE. Of course, it was a design flaw, something that allowed a leak to form every couple years.

And it had a problem with the clutch master cylinder. Like most Japmobiles, my Nova had a hydraulic clutch, meaning that the pedal operated a small master cylinder that in turn operated a small slave cylinder mounted on the bellhousing. The seals in the master cylinder failed. OFTEN. And when they did, every pump of the pedal would leak stinking brake fluid INSIDE the cab and directly into the carpet under the dashboard.

That was the most unforgivable flaw in that car.

Oh, and the headliner fabric just fell off the headliner after a few years...

Other than that...

I've had many cars, including brand new Toyota corollas.
Mechanically pretty good little cars, but no matter how they slice it, it's still a Kipper Snack Coffin.

Give me an old pig from the 60s and I'll deal with the fuel consumption and the maintainance.
At least I'll make it home to my family.

Worst car I ever owned was... [drumroll here] ... a Honda.

Honda was a maker of motorcycles, but the company's founder loved auto racing and guided the firm into automotive manufacture. But their first cars were... shitty.

The wheels were 10" diameter. That is not a typo -- TEN inch. The one I owned had around 50,000 miles on it and still wore the original tires, and they still had good tread. The whole car only weighed around 1,300 pounds! I was a young man then, but it is fact that I once stood flat-footed in my dad's driveway and lifted the back end of that car completely off the ground with just my hands grasping the back bumper.

Powertrain -- A massive 596cc twin-cylinder air-cooled overhead-cam motorcycle engine, driving a miniature four-speed gearbox via a tandem-chain-driven wet clutch -- typical bike setup. Estimated mpg: 55 highway. Estimated top speed: depended a LOT on which way the wind blew. Seating capacity: Two normal adults in front bucket seats; two double-amputees (no legs) in the back bench seat. Trunk capacity: about two grocery sacks, carefully inserted on their sides.

It broke down so many times... Once it died near Hillsboro, OH, and I called my dad to come get me. With a little help from the boys at the local feed mill, we rolled that car from the scale ramp into the back of Dad's half-ton Chevy pickup and almost closed the tailgate. Width-wise, the tires on the car just sorta rubbed the inside of the truck's wheel wells.

Now THAT car is what recalls were created for.

I finally sold it for peanuts to a guy who already owned two others like it and a body shop. He had cannibalism in mind. Mine had a good body...

Ah yes, I remember it well, the joke was, it sold by the pound, a dollar a pound to be exact.
I actually wanted one, but knew my friends would laugh at me, seeing how they all had muscle cars.
But I did get better mileage in my Austin Healy Sprite. :D
