Title: Ransom Ware
Post by: Possumpoint on February 05, 2017, 06:18:43 AM
Caught a ransom ware virus while looking at video's on my computer. It was a video that purported to show people at Walmart. On opening it immediately locked up my computer and displayed a link that said it was to Microsoft but the phone no. didn't check out. Took no further action and called my youngest son for help. He had me turn off the computer and turn back on pressing f8 to engage a repair/restore feature on Microsoft OS 10. Walked me through it and the computer was back up and running at no expense to me.

Thought this info might help someone here.

Thanks PP.  Did not know video's could do that or is that Youtub video's can not do that.

I think I was on facebook and it showed a younger woman standing at a Red Box. She was looking up at the ceiling camera. Don't open it.

I don't do facebook as it not safe.  But that's just me.   But your post should help others by knowing what you open.

I wouldn't watch any video unless it's on YouTube, Vimeo, or some popular video player service where they crunch and host the video -- unless you really know what it is.

This ransomware shit, by the way, is the most dangerous thing going right now.  I used to know someone who would know someone who got hit with this, but now I know people who have been hit.

Agreed. YouTube has too much to lose if they let ransomware get through to end-users.

Here's one (understandably self-interested) take on the issue, from security firm MalwareBytes....
