If you run a laptop wirelessly from your home PC will it have the same IP address as the PC?

Does this same laptop's IP addy change every time you log out and shut down?

My friend's husband keeps hacking into her Facebook account and she doesn't know how ... so if she gets a laptop for her personal use will he still be able to access the FB account from the PC if she never goes on the PC again and changes the password of her FB?

Elfie

Hey Tater...

You would have a different IP address while connected to your wireless in your house (your 192.168.xxx), but to the outside world, it would be the same IP address.

Hey Elfie!

Yes, I saw all those warnings over at FB but he's doing some kind of inside job... he doesn't even have FB.  I'm thinking maybe he installed a keystroke logger or something.

You on FB?

Thanks Taxed...

So, if she got a personal laptop ... NOTHING would be connected to the house PC?  Let's say he hired someone to hack in to find out her passwords or installed a keystroke logger or anything like that.... would her laptop be safe?

Hey Walks!!

She's wondering if he's up a tracking device on her car...her phone...etc.   Yeah, it's not a nice situation over there and hopefully it will be over as soon as she can manage.

Yes, I told her to make sure she passwords it.

Most setups like this are pretty simple.  An Internet connection (RoadRunner, AT&T DSL, etc) is connected to the WAN port of a router which has a single public IP address.  The router then has hard wired ports that connect to the typical desktop PC and wireless connections are supported for laptops, iPads, etc.  The hardware connected to the router is usually automatically configured by a process called DHCP (dynamic host configuration protocol) that gives the hardware (laptop, desktop pc, etc) its IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, and domain name server information.  If you have a lot of hardware connecting and disconnecting to your network it is possible that the private IP addres you have on your laptop today will be in use the next time you connect to your wireless network and you will be assigned a different one.

The private IP addresses are kept track of by your router and are NATd (network address translation) onto high ports on the public IP address.

Typically if your friend is getting her FB page hacked it will not be due to any kind of IP addressing issues, but more likely due to information gathered by someone from social engineering or locally installed keylogger type software.
