DVD player
« on: January 15, 2011, 09:22:29 PM »
So times when the good wife plays a DVD sometimes there is a load hum in the player itself and the move and sound is ok.  But take it out and put a new disk in and it is ok.  She has come across 3 in the last month.  Is it the player or the disk???    Also will a reg-DVD play on a Blue-Ray machine?

Our Samsung HD DVD player does this too.  We were thinking it was maybe the brand.  As to the Blue Ray yes you can play regular DVD's on it - you just can't play blue-ray on a regular DVD player...

I realize this doesn't help but maybe if it is the same brand.... 8) 8)

Never buy Sony, they are living on a name, but their stuff is crap now.

ST didn't believe me when I first told her the DVD player isn't always noisy.
I have a feeling if I took it apart and cleaned it, the noise would probably stop, but they are soo cheap, for the trouble, I could just buy a new one.

FWIW, Blue Ray is a rip off, it doesn't cost anymore to make the disk, yet they charge nearly twice as much for the movie.
Yes, it tends to look better sometimes, but it's not worth the extra cost, thats why we bought a regular player.

Thank Solar, most of our thing last about 30 or 40 years LOL  So a regular DVD with a VCR player in it would be all we need. My wife is a move nut so I got her a big HD/TV last year.  It look about the same as the old TV, but I have no problems moving the HD around.   ;D

Solar, I agree with you about Sony. There was a time when it was damn good stuff for the money, but any more... I'll go with Samsung or even LG before I choose Sony. However....  :P

My old JVC DVD player died about a year and a half ago. (Another Japanese name that used to be DAMN good stuff!) The day it died, I happened to be flipping through the sale flyers and noticed a Sony DVD player for $19.95 at one of the big name pharmacies -- I think it was CVS or Walgreen's. The player was brand new, not a refurb, and came with a remote and a factory warranty. Those places use a miniscule selection of super-cheap electronics as loss leaders, and they're sometimes sold out. But I got me one and it's been playing anything and everything I can stuff into it ever since, with no problems whatsoever.

Hey, if I can get a good year out of a $20 DVD player, why not?  :D

Ya know what I look for anymore? Is a good remote, one where I can read it, and have the main buttons laid out so it's easy to use in the dark.
There is nothing worse than having the channel selector next to the volume, or the power button mixed in with other crap.
For me, it's all about ease of use, I'm always bummed when I get comfortable with a remote, only to have it fail and have to look for a new unit with a good remote, they are few and far between.
