Dominion's Water Line Insurance
« on: March 28, 2018, 02:11:38 PM »

Dominion is the major power company here in Virginia.

Maybe some of you in other states have a similar "insurance program?"

We received a letter from Dominion today suggesting that we take out insurance on our water line.

I have no idea why or how a power company has any interest in our water but it is a legit letter from them.

I was wondering if anyone else has received this letter and recommendations on whether the insurance is worth taking?

Thanks!

Below is a summary of the letter ...

Water Line Replacement Program
Quote
Did you know the water line that runs from the street to your home is your responsibility? Water line failures can cost a homeowner thousands of dollars in unexpected repairs.

Fortunately, there is a program to help you avoid these costly repair bills; it's Dominion Products and Services, Inc.’s Water Line Replacement Program.
For as low as $4.99/month the Program provides:

Convenience- Simply call our water line replacement service number any time—day or night—and we’ll respond within 24 hours.

Savings- We will pay for all water line parts and labor to replace your water line, and we won’t even charge a service call fee.

No long term contract - Stay protected as long as you like.  If you are not 100% satisfied with the Water Line Replacement Program, you can cancel at any time.

5$ a month sounds high, for something you should not have problems with in your life time.  On an older home I could see that but new homes have a lot of codes they have to follow in this day and age.

Thank You Walks.

After checking around, I believe that you are right!

Thanks Again

I bought their WATER and their SEWER insurance.

At under $100 a year, sounds pretty cheap to me.

I don't need a $10K bill.

On the surface, it sounds like a good deal, assuming you live 100' or more from the street and your pipes are more than 40 years old.
If you live 20' from the street, you could replace your own line with Pex for about 300 to $500. including labor and parts and never worry again.
But if you have new pipes, forget it for a few decades.

My home is over 50 years old, and was built on the cheap.

My lines also are 80 feet out, AND were built to code at the time, which is not code now.

Hell, they're probably leaking as we speak. Seriously, 50 years is a long time for metal in the ground.

The Sewer Line feeds all the local vegetation - judging by the roots that grow into it.

The Water Line - as long as it leaks BEFORE it reaches my Home and Meter I don't give a crap.

Where do you think that I got the idea?

In reality, my neighbors aren't close enough for it to be a bother.
