Computer or Monitor....?
« on: December 05, 2018, 11:58:43 AM »
I haven't been on for about a week because I have been having computer or monitor problems. Anyways here we go.

When I fire up my computer after about 15 minutes of being on I get a "black screen" on my monitor. I can hear my computer running but all I get is a "black screen". I shut the computer down completely and walked away for about six hours. I fired it back up and was watching a Youtube video and after about 15 minutes my monitor went to a "black screen". I can hear the video playing but all I get is a "black screen". I shut it down once again and bingo after 15 minutes or so the screen goes black. This time I leave it alone and let the computer go into sleep mode. I shake the mouse back and forth and bingo everything is working correctly. But after about 15 minutes the monitor goes black once again.

Before I bring my computer to the shop maybe someone on here is familiar with this problem I'm having. Also my wife is bring home a monitor from work this evening to see if that's the problem. Until then maybe someone can help with my problem.

Thanks in advance, bronx

Sometimes it''s the most basic of problems. First, check all cables, then open up the case, and blow it out, a compressor works best, but it sounds like a video card getting hot, so make sure the fan is spinning, and not plugged with debris.
I failed to clean mine, and just last month the CPU fried due to dust and dog hair build up. We live in the forest and we have clay dirt, like talcum, and with the dogs in and out, there is no escaping the dust, add to that, the computer sits on the floor, so every time one ran by, it would suck in debris, it finally died.
Oh, and the video card was crusted over as well, so blow it out twice a year.

Anyway, it sounds like a video card failing, or it could, as you suspect be a monitor as well, so check that it too has good air flow.

That's what it sounds like for me also.   I blow out my computer about 2 times a year.   I also got a outside duel computer fan system that I put under the computer.  I vacuum it off once a month, I find very little dust now when I blow out my computer now that it's on the outboard fan system.  It lifts my laptop up about 3/4" in front and about 1.5" in back and makes it nice for typing.

If the monitor your wife brings home works OK, it's not the video card but the monitor. However, it's always a good idea to blow out your computer, just make sure you do not have the power cable plugged in. Safety first! I'd also take it to the garage to blow it out. Your wife might appreciate that.

Yeah, I should have mentioned that.

I learned a hard lesson blowing out my keyboard outside, keys went flying into the forest.
Oh, and set the compressor to about 40 PSI if you can, you don't want to over spin the fan blades, and make sure you have bled off the compressor tank of moisture. There is a drain on the bottom of the tank, otherwise you run the risk of blowing in a mist, something you don't want on electronics, it leaves behind minerals that can cause a short on the board..

I just buy a can of air from Walmart and not have to worry about the pressure or moisture.

Yeah, I have a dozen sitting around, but for a thorough cleaning, the compressor is great, even a vacuum on reverse works well along with a can.
I have a suspect your pooter doesn't get anywhere as dusty as most of us rural folk. I know Walks can attest to dust.

I have a tower and yes it does get dusty and accumulates cat hair. I use a vacuum and canned air once or twice a year. I primarily use my tablet for everything and just vacuum the keyboard to get rid of breadcrumbs and poppy seeds from my bagels.

  My wife was a big city girl.  She likes the windows open as much as she can.  But when we mover to the East side of the state (farm land 380 acres) she found out you don't open windows and doors if you don't like dust.  Or your dusting every other day.  That's what you have A/C for and I change my air filter once a month, if it needs it or not.  So that's 12 filters a year, now she dusts once a week.

That's the thing, if you don't live in the sticks, you can't imagine the dust, be it earth or pollen, even the gravel roads, there is no escaping it.
People move here, have real expensive carpeting installed, and it's gone within a year. It becomes a giant filter, and within a year, you can't get all the dirt out.
We clean our washable filters every two weeks, and they are always caked with powder.

Hiya @Bronx ...

Sounds to me like power settings, and maybe it is having trouble coming back from sleep...

Win7 is evident how to get to control panel... For win 8 and 10:
Poke start and start typing 'control' sans quotes...
Find the resulting control panel icon and poke it.

Top right in control panel dialog [large icons]
Find power options.

There is a built in plan called 'always on'... sometimes you have to look for it... (there's a pulldown below...)

If you set it to always on, it disables all power settings
If that gets you joy, with both the mon and pooter staying on, then your problem is likely in the power settings, or in the driver for the vid or monitor.

IF TRUE, go back to power settings and set it to 'recommended', and hit the 'set defaults' option.
If that brings no joy, then try setting sleep and monitor settings longer - My tv computer is set 'always on' all the time, because it messed with me watching movies and vids... I have to physically shut it off or put it to sleep.

IF FALSE, then worry about the vid card and testing a known good monitor...

Thanks all....Good and bad news....the good news it was my monitor the bad news WFT with these prices for these damn monitors....

The cheapest one so far and I brought it was a whopping $113 and that's because it's 1080p. Them damn 4K go for around $250 and up.

At Best Buy they had a 55" 4K for $299 so I just couldn't understand how a 21" computer monitor is more expensive then a TV.

Oh well...I'm up and running now. Thank for all the input. Situations like this make this place (CPF) the best in the world.

Once again..THANKS...!

Take it back. I bought a 48" TV monitor designed for PC use and the latest ultra high video for around $400.
Yeah, I found it odd that there was little selection to be found and for exorbitant prices, and the sales people didn't see to want to help, so I went online and found out PC monitors are being phased out for TVs that double as monitors.
Though not plug and play, after a few hours of tweaking, it works great.

Most of the time, multi-packs from Sam's Club/Costco, B.J.'s is cheaper.

There is also a rechargeable handheld blower from a company called Hurricane.
