Why 5G is a big deal if China is unchecked

QuoteBy nature I'm not a technology doomsdayer.  I don't have fears of artificial intelligence taking over society, eliminating jobs to where we're all under control of a robot police-state while the elite float overhead tossing down scraps for us to fight over.  On the contrary, I think the further technology advances, society becomes cleaner and more efficient, and in turn creates a jobs boom and better quality of life.

Technology is a good thing, assuming China isn't in control.  The CCP, like any communist power, doesn't play nice with liberty.  You don't want an authority who is currently running concentration camps with live organ harvesting to have any technological high-ground.  With Trump saving our national security and implementing new defenses, like the Space Force and prioritizing cyber-security, I'm not worried about this prospect.  China can't compete without stealing, and that's coming to an end.

Please correct me if i'm wrong....every home with a 5G connection will essentially be a tower with in itself. A home where cable can't get to when 5G comes along bingo no problem.

I was talking with a friend and he's looking to buy some property and asked his cable company (comcast) how much would it cost to bring a line up to his house. He told me they quoted him $50,000 dollars. Another friend jumped and and told him hold off because in a few months when 5G bugs are worked out his home wouldn't need cable because the 5G connection will fill that void in the areas that cable isn't present.

Now I was silent through this whole conversation because that is way, way above my paygrade. So my question is this correct, wishful thinking, or just someone blowing smoke up someone's butt....?
People sleep peacefully at night because there are a few tough men prepared to do violence on their behalf.

A foolish man complains about his torn pockets.

A wise man uses it to scratch his balls.

My understanding is that 5G boosts cell service connections because it can handle data so much faster even in weak areas with drop out. In other words, if you have a huge file that needed several minutes to upload on 4G, that under 5G, it only needs a fraction of a second connectivity to secure the transaction.

Yeah, it's at a higher frequency, which will be weaker and trouble getting through walls, etc., so we would need mircocells all over the place...

There's no reason we have to be completely wireless.  5G can co-exist with our old-school wire infrastructure.  It would be more secure and high quality.

Remote locations can possibly reach a cell with investment in a directional antenna. Possibly 30 dB of gain (1000x).

You should be able to do the same with 4G though. I'm not sure if the economics for putting the equipment together to tie a remote in wirelessly ever worked out enough for the commercial providers to justify the investment in equipment.

The problem is that on the past they had to hack your phone. With the Chinese 5G network they are expected to build in back doors to steal your information as you do business transaction, political phone calls, banking... just like we know the US government does today supposedly only with a warrant. Encryption is not a guarantee. I put nothing on the cloud and do not banking transactions through the phone. China has done little to stop hackers operating in their country/

Exactly. This is why we can't allow technology built in China, like routers, in our domestic network.

Here is a good article that summarizes the current and planned offerings from AT&T the major wireless carriers:

https://www.androidauthority.com/what-to-expect-from-att-5g-917222/

This article also describes what AT&T offers with  their "5GE" phones, which is really an enhanced 4G offering, NOT true 5G.

ATT currently offers mobile 5G in the 39GHz millimeter wave band, which will has difficulty penetrating glass, much less walls.  Other carriers are going to use some lower GHz bands which close to what WiFi uses (2.4 and 5GHz), or even lower. So 5G is not only about the frequency, it is also a technology that will improve the throughput of data between source and destination.

I would expect that anyone wanting to use fixed wireless for home internet access will still be charged a premium AND will be subject to some significant data caps.  Maybe we should just wait for Elon Musk to finish rolling out his Starlink Internet satellite network: https://www.zdnet.com/article/elon-musks-internet-from-space-60-new-spacex-satellites-bring-us-service-closer/

Funny thing - I was driving around the "city" yesterday afternoon (looking for a Harbor Freight store) and noticed my phone said 5G.  I never get 5G where I live...  Toy
I pray, not wish because I have a God not a Genie.

The reason you see it in the city is traffic control for the future, and of course now.
Without getting too specific, the Federal govt is employing a plan where all vehicles communicate with one another, and Big Brother as well.
Think GPS, only more invasive, they'll know your every move at any given second, track you continuously.

The upside? Kidnappers caught on camera, the computer tells authorities where they are and how to cut them off by jamming traffic.
the downside? Govt will have total control over the populace.
