Here's the sense I get: it's only a matter of time before the far-left tilt of the Democrats drives out the moderates. This election will be crucial for them. If Obama wins, the radicals will be vindicated, and they'll lean farther to the left. If he loses, then a struggle will break out between the moderates and radicals. That sound about right?

You are correct, and that far-left tilt is already driving out conservative and moderate Democrats. Ronald Reagan led the awakening of our party against Jimmy Carter (what a mess he was!) and Mitt Romney is doing the same for us with Barack Obama.
