The Ancients asserted that History, a fountain of knowledge,
was Man's greatest teacher, if we choose to learn from it.
Victor Hanson honors it w/his wit and wisdom.
But our self important 'intellectuals"; infatuated by self and
preening w/conceit, have no need of its lessons. Of course.
Regarding Russia, one of the enduring mythologies promoted
by these intellectuals, is Russia's long tenure as a 'world power'.
A brief summary will suffice:
* In the 17th century, Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden,
repeatedly handed Russia their ass.
* Napoleon did the same the next century.
* During the Crimean War, Great Britain did likewise.
* In 1905, Japan sank Russia's Baltic Fleet comprising
27 Warships carrying 20,000+ sailors and marines.
* In 1914 at Tannenberg, Von Hindenburg annihilated
two Russian Armies inflicting 400,000 casualties and
effectively driving Russia out of the Great War.
* In the Winter War of 1939, Finland drove them back
across the border.
* In WW2, our Lend-Lease kept them breathing; until
Germany was overwhelmed.
* And in recent times, Russia fled Afghanistan in the
middle of the nite!
