Title: Trade War
Post by: Solar on May 10, 2019, 07:41:51 AM
Anyway, the leftist media said if we had one, the stock mkt would collapse. Oh, and according to Fuglosi, we're in a constitutional crisis.
Umm, stock mkt hasn't shifted yet.

Tariffs will make our Country MUCH STRONGER, not weaker. Just sit back and watch! In the meantime, China should not renegotiate deals with the U.S. at the last minute. This is not the Obama Administration, or the Administration of Sleepy Joe, who let China get away with "murder!"

Many Americans on both side of the political aisle fail to realize that we are engaged in a full fledged new Cold War!   Unlike the first Cold War, Russia has an ally this time. Vladimir Putin and China are causing conflicts for the United States and our allies on every front.  They are using proxy states in Syria, N. Korea and Venezuela and new flash points may spring up at other places all around the globe.  Russia doesn't have the economic clout that China does, so China is using unfair trading practices and sabotage of trade talks to throw a monkey wrench into what Trump has to deal with both domestically and with our allies.

The forensic investigation of the 9/11 attacks connected the dots and saw that America was in a state of denial about the fact that hostile powers had declared war on us.  While China and Russia have not declared war, they are coordinating their hostile attacks;  The China-US Trade War is only one of these fronts!

Expect the media and the rest of the Democrats, along with Wall Street and a gaggle of Republicans to attack the President when he doesn't cave in!  BTW, Wall Street has nearly a trillion dollars invested in China, so many corporation and their investor climed in bed with the Communist Chinese a very long time ago.  It's almost like the Chicoms planned it this way!

A China/Russian alliance is a house of cards at best. It may convenient for both at this point in time, but China will dump Russia in a heartbeat. There has never been any love lost between the two and China will not fall on the sword for Russia. If Trump hods the line on trade, China will act in its own best interest and this alliance could be a memory.

A reflection.
Rather than a quite narrow trade war,  assert this is a very broad character war.
Consider: China was ruled by Autocratic Dynasties from the Chang around 1,500 BC
to the Manchu in 1912. This was followed by several Military Dictators culminating
w/Mao-Zedong and Communist Party Rule in 1949.
During that 3,500 year span, the impulse of creativity and innovation was stifled,
discarded and forgotten with individualism replaced by the cult of the collective.
So is it any wonder that Chinese cheat, lie and steal their way across the world?
We are  born imperfect, yet to improve we must change attitude and behavior.
Assert this is the essence of what Trump is dealing with, hardly tariffs.

Exactly!
China and Russia have always had a love hate relationship, they love communism, and hate America and each other, "My enemy's enemy, is my friend" but these two are not friends.
Russia supplied pilots in the Korean war against the US, china was the power behind NK at the time.
So in truth, this is of no surprise, but this time I doubt it will end in a stalemate, Russia really doesn't like China, but they share a common enemy, the US Oil dollar and it's control over the mkt.
Russia needs China at this point in time, but would turn on one another in a heart beat.
That's what makes this entire event so fascinating, Trump is killing China's already struggling economy as well as crippling Russia's only real income, oil, all the while clamping down on their allies, Cuba and Iran.

Somethings gonna give and it won't be the US, I have total faith in Trump.

I';m not sure we are in a new cold or trade war, I do know that we would not be in any trade or other war if obama or a rino was in the white house, they would have caved in by now, sold us short, signed a treaty , declared how great they were and the American tax payer would be left holding the bag. If we are in any cold or treaty war now, it is because our president has not sold us short and is negotiating the best deal for us. I call that success for us and I call that a cold slap of reality for the rest of the world.

Just a couple years back, as the China economy was in high gear, many investors put their money in that foreign market. That means they took it out of the US market. And for good reason - BO made sure that the US economy was failing with no end in sight.

Investors are usually pretty good at seeing a shift. But they certainly underestimated the Trump effect. Trump is balancing trade to the benefit of the US. The uncertainty in the market is turning into certainty that the US is now a better place to invest. Those dollars invested in China are coming back to work in the US. Those slow to recognize it will take a bath - as they should. We will see (have seen) minor downturns in the market (days, hours), but the positive growth in the US far outstrips the foreign investor's problems.

China will need to act quickly in the negotiations as the US population will adjust and learn to live without Chinese imports. Tick tick.

One area that needs urgent attention is in technical development. Our universities are exporting our ability to create new technology as we give our university educations away to foreign countries. We give it away because foreign students pay their tuition while many US students are subsidized.  Certainly there are trade schools that suffice to replace the snowflake degrees - that are of no real account to our productivity. But we still need to grow / pass along expertise in the hard sciences and grow in those areas which requires motivated US students and universities that pursue them. We also need to encourage professor turn-over and more US professors; tenure does nothing good anymore. I've seen one of the brightest US citizen PhDs I've ever known struggle to find a university position while I've also sat under many professors that lost it a long time ago. The university system is another broken liberal disaster from the student standpoint and professor perspective.

Oh - and making tuition free to all US students will only make it worse; universities will do about anything to gain tuition including giving our knowledge to other countries.

You make a good point about the US population adjusting.

Because of our freedom some enterprising folks will see a market opportunity and "build a better mouse trap". Also, most Chinese companies have probably built in a profit margin where they can adjust prices so as to no lose market share in the US.

China has become an increasingly hostile actor.  They have been using capitalism and trade to fuel their economy, but they are still Godless Commies and trade relations with their foes is only a means to an end.  The end goal of Communists have always been one world communism; just as the end goal of Islamists is achieving a one world Caliphate under Sharia Law.  Tyrants throughout history seek to expand their empires and often buddy up with their rivals against their common foes.

Wally, that was my whole point. Had obama still been in office, he would had caved in and no talk of a new cold war would have taken place. It is only because Trump is holding firm for the U.S. that there is that talk. Just as obama did not see a threat by Islamist, that did not make it go away. I still call what Trump is doing success for the U.S. despite the media's fear of a new cold war. Or to put it another way, had Trump caved in on everything china wants, would the threat from china go away?

I agree.  I don't know that we really know if it was Russia or if it was only Russia that attempted to interfere with our election.  (or if it was Russia or China or some 400 pound guy in his parent's basement, as Trump said).  I think Obama's Team cherry picked what Russia and China and others always do and created the myth of Trump/Russia collusion.  If so, this myth may have begun when they saw that Trump had been planning to build a hotel in Russia and when Paul Manafort was hired, they story began to get legs.  It will be interesting to see what Obama's lawyer, (Greg Craig) prosecution reveals, since he worked with Manafort and Ukraine.  Did Obama's Team send Manafort to be hired by Trump just as Fusion GPS did with the Russian Layer with Don Jr's Trump Tower Meeting?

That's pretty much what Trump has been saying all along. What's more important, caging a lion and suffering a little in the interim, or blindly sailing along until the storm hits and China will hold out the life preserver with conditions attached?
The country would never be allowed to recover under a China controlled economy. China would offer cheap products until they control the mkt, then they'd slowly raise the cost of doing business with China once they have you where they want you.
Personally, I would gladly pay 25% more for a quality made American product, I miss the quality of the 60s.

Donald Trump warns China to reach a trade deal now, or face a 'far worse' one if I get re-elected

US President accuses China of playing for time in the hope he will lose to a 'very weak' Democrat in next year's election
https://www.scmp.com/news/china/diplomacy/article/3009895/donald-trump-warns-china-reach-trade-deal-now-or-face-far

The media and the rest of the Democrats are affecting our national security interests by continuing their hoax and teasing impeachment.  China had agreed to our terms and now have become hopeful that the Democrats may either drive Trump from office or defeat him in 2020 and they can return to business as usual with President Joe Biden.

I'm guessing by the time Trump is no longer president(after his second term), we will have increased our trade with other countries such as India and Mexico and China will rank lower on the trade scale. We don't need them.

I've heard this nonsense in several articles, but honestly, the Chinese aren't so stupid as to gamble on a 1000.000.00 to one long shot.
They are playing a game, but it has nothing to do with the Dims, they are playing the NK, Venezuelan card in hopes of getting Trump to concede on tariffs, they think if they can keep pressure in VZ then Trump will fold.
Chinese don't know Trump like we do.

QuoteBrazil, Mexico and Vietnam are among the countries that could make marginal gains in areas such as manufacturing and agriculture should US-China tensions continue after they flared up again this week, analysts have said.
The trade war between Washington and Beijing has already caused shifts in global trade, and will continue to create winners and losers as businesses try to cope with increased uncertainty.

QuoteA study by The Economist Intelligence Unit late last year suggested that many countries around Asia could reap the benefits of filling China's shoes in exports to the US. Malaysia and Vietnam were projected to be the biggest winners in IT equipment manufacturing, while Bangladesh, India and Vietnam were potentially able to enjoy a boost in exports of ready-made garments.

I don't see this as a trade war at all.
--------------------------------------------------
It's not a trade war, rather it is a fundamental clash of cultural values.
We are the offspring of Britain, one of the world's great Empires who
were molded by Imperial Rome lasting four centuries. As a consequence
we were formed by those attitudes, behaviors, impulses and sentiments.
China has no such heritage, being ruled by autocratic dynasties, later by
military dictators and now by communism; for some 4,000 years.
The creativity and initiative that are hallmarks of western civilization
never existed in China and never will, given their rejection of individualism
in favor of the mentality of the collective/communal.
That they cheat, lie and steal is their well developed character trait.
Anyone unaware of this reality truly needs to wise up.
Since Adam, various cultures/societies have appeared on the world stage,
among them: the Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, Egyptians, Greeks,
Carthaginians, Romans, Indians, Chinese; among many more. Some have
changed the world making an enduring name for themselves while most
have not. China is prominent among the latter.

The China stuff (and global economic realignment in general) has been a wake-up for me because I've naively believed it's been something pretty much all conservatives were in sync.  To see the squealing by RINOs and the degree of control China really has on DC has been unnerving.  It took a president who really attacked the problem to shake all this up and to expose the frauds.

All true Walter, and add one more, a belief that they are a superior race, or as we call them, Racists.
This failed belief system is dangerous in that being number two in the world slaps them in the face with reality and exposes this belief as a lie, something that actually angers much of the populace, but we can be assured if they were to ever takeover, they would be brutal tyrants for this belief.
It is shared throughout the Asian world, the Japanese proved their brutality as it conquered and enslaved people.

Trump has China rattled. Seriously, he holds all the cards and China is trying to meddle in world affairs with money as its weapon, yet Trump is playing the bankrupt card against China and China knows if it doesn't concede, it will suffer more than it has in the last century.
Then they'll be facing issue domestically, where the people demand change in leadership, of a guy that just appointed himself dictator for life.

I say openly to President Xi & all of my many friends in China that China will be hurt very badly if you don't make a deal because companies will be forced to leave China for other countries. Too expensive to buy in China. You had a great deal, almost completed, & you backed out!

..There will be nobody left in China to do business with. Very bad for China, very good for USA! But China has taken so advantage of the U.S. for so many years, that they are way ahead (Our Presidents did not do the job). Therefore, China should not retaliate-will only get worse!

....completely avoided if you by from a non-Tariffed Country, or you buy the product inside the USA (the best idea). That's Zero Tariffs. Many Tariffed companies will be leaving China for Vietnam and other such countries in Asia. That's why China wants to make a deal so badly!...

Their is no reason for the U.S. Consumer to pay the Tariffs, which take effect on China today. This has been proven recently when only 4 points were paid by the U.S., 21 points by China because China subsidizes product to such a large degree. Also, the Tariffs can be.....

China Retaliates...

China is raising tariffs on $60 billion of US goods starting June 1

China will raise tariffs on $60 billion in U.S. goods in retaliation for the U.S. decision to hike duties on Chinese goods, the Chinese Finance Ministry said Monday.

Beijing will increase tariffs on more than 5,000 products to as high as 25%. Duties on some other goods will increase to 20%. Those rates will rise from either 10% or 5% previously.

The move follows President Donald Trump's decision to raise duties on $200 billion in Chinese products to 25% from 10%. The world's two largest economies have struggled to sign a trade deal and end a widening conflict that threatens to damage the global economy.

The latest shot in the trade war rattled investors. Major U.S. stock indexes

Great to welcome Chairman Shin from Lotte Group to the WH. They just invested $3.1 BILLION into Louisiana-biggest investment in U.S. EVER from a South Korean company, & thousands more jobs for Americans. Great partners like ROK know the U.S. economy is running stronger than ever!

For those unfamiliar with the Lotte group, they own Hyundai, so expect to see a new auto plant coming to Louisiana.

https://www.theepochtimes.com/around-200-us-companies-considering-moving-production-from-china-to-india_2897876.html

QuoteA top U.S.-based group that advocates for strong business relations with India recently revealed that about 200 U.S. companies have contacted them about the possibility of setting up an alternative manufacturing base in India to replace their current assembly lines in China.

In an April 27 interview with Press Trust of India, India's largest news agency, Mukesh Aghi, president and CEO of the Washington-based U.S.-India Strategic Partnership Forum, said that in the past several months, he has received an increased number of inquiries from roughly 200 U.S. companies.

To increase India's competitiveness, Aghi suggested that India and the United States draft a free trade agreement, especially "if India is concerned about cheap goods coming from China" that could take business away from domestic companies.

The trade dispute between the United States and China—with U.S. tariffs on Chinese-made goods—has already prompted many manufacturers with production bases in China to move their factories out of the country to prevent losses.

This little experiment China tried where they thought Trump was bluffing is not only allowing him to re-align the global economy, but cutting past any "let's wait him out and see if he's bluffing" phase for any other negotiations.  Also with staring down armed conflict, etc....

QuoteChina has no choice if they want to retain their economic model. Remember, China's economy is deep (manufacturing) but also narrow. They are dependent on raw materials, customers and market access. {Go Deep}
Additionally, President Trump announces today he has not made any decision on the next phase of 25% tariffs on the remaining $350 billion in Chinese products.  He doesn't need to.  Merely the possibility of additional tariffs will pause any further investment; and some companies not currently impacted will make decisions to avoid the possibility of impact.
President Trump has walked Chairman Xi into a trap.  There is only downside for China in the current dynamic.  In an effort to avoid the downside, China will bleed cash to retain their economic position.... However, this can only last so long.

The world is watching, especially Iran and Russia. He doesn't bluff, they really need to read his book and learn something. He brings the only real offer to the table that's acceptable, with two even worse offers to follow if they turn down the first, and China just fucked themselves.
Trump doesn't do the old 70/30 offer, then counter with a lessening 60/40, he makes an offer and ups the anti when they balk. China has nowhere left to move, they have no other options left on the table, though I do believe they will play some global moves in hopes of shaking Trump, but no doubt, Trump already knew what their next move would be and already set contingencies in place to counter.

And I look forward to getting away from that cheap Chinese shit. Competition is good, it creates a better quality of goods because price is no longer the deciding factor, people got used to buying cheap shit and expecting it to only last for a short time and that's sad.
You'd think libs would be excited that there will be less throw away crap, because people are keeping things longer due to better quality.
Granted, that's not a guarantee, but I do expect to see the quality of products increase by quite a large margin.

For far to long the U.S. subsidized world trade. It worked. We fixed the worlds' economy on the back of the U.S. worker and dollar.
Now it is time to stop it.
The tariffs are twenty years over due. Big corporations and banks will soon realize that the tariffs will also help them.

Agree. When Nixon opened up the Bamboo Curtain and they allowed the world in, it looked like a perfect opportunity to convert communism, and we did what we could to speed up conversion through relaxed trade.

A reflection.
Bill Bennett, Reagan's Sec'y of Ed. identified the moral
virtue of Honor, as a core value of Greece and Rome.
It forbade cheating, lying and stealing and those
that did were disgraced and ostracized from society.
China has existed w/o Honor in a closed Asian environment
for thousands of years, yet such behavior is unacceptable
among the rest of the world.
As such, their attitude and behavior is the seed of their
self-destruction, a reality to which they are utterly blind.

Ever since Richard Nixon, a staunch anit-communist, "opened China", the bet was and has continued to be that capitalism would do so much for China that they would become westernized and more Democratic and turn away from Communism.  While Democrats in our nation seem to have no problem with China being Communist, the GOP Globalits seem to have turned a blind eye to what China has been doing.  China uses capitalism to strengthen it's Communist Regime, in a similar way that the Islamist use our freedoms to subvert our nation.  In both cases, it is merely a means to an end and they are not about to come around to being more like us.  The goal of the former COMINTERN was at least up front about what they wished to achieve. The Marxist Dream has always been a New World Order under Marxism in every corner of the world.  (The Islamist want a One World Caliphate under Shariah Law.)

It very well may be that the United States and other western democracies would be far better off, pulling out of China and looking elsewhere for emerging markets and cheap labor and consumer products to stock the shelves of places from Harbor Freight to Walmart!  In so many ways, we are looking only at the short term while China and Islam are playing the long game. Very similar problems for our nation's future survival.

An observation.
The  driver of China's dishonorable trade behavior isn't Communism.
Culturally they have been ruled by autocratic dynasties since around
2,000 BC which formed their temperament as a nation/state.
This stifled any individualistic impulse which is a core trait necessary
for capitalism to succeed.
They behave as they do because it's ingrained in their culture/society.
Were communism gone from China today, they would continue their
current behavior.

This stifled any individualistic impulse which is a core trait necessary
for capitalism to succeed.
They behave as they do because it's ingrained in their culture/society.
Were communism gone from China today, they would continue their
current behavior.

Wait a second...didnt the chinese invent all sorts of things like the wheelbarrow, the crossbow, the water thing(that they walk on to water their fields), and even an earthquake detector?

But generally I agree with you. Is communism in practice really any different than the mandate of heaven? Both are totalitarian. Thier president is just their new emperor. And once trump causes all sorts of disaster for them the peasants will revolt and install a new emperor.

QuoteStanley is investing $90 million to open a plant in Fort Worth, Texas, by late next year that will employ about 500 people to make 10 million Craftsman wrenches and ratchets and 50 million sockets annually. Robots and fast-forging presses will help boost output about 25% above the older forging machinery now used to make Craftsman wrenches in China, helping keep production costs at the new plant in line with those in China, Stanley said.

Japanese Companies Move Production to India From China as US Tariffs Hit

https://www.theepochtimes.com/japanese-companies-move-production-from-china-to-india-as-us-tariffs-hit_2926080.html

QuoteSeveral Japanese companies are moving some of their production lines out of China, in a move to avoid paying for current U.S. tariffs on Chinese-manufactured goods, as well as possible future tariffs—as there is no sign of an imminent trade deal between Beijing and Washington.

Southeast Asian countries such as Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam have already become alternative production sites for many tech manufacturers since U.S. tariffs were first announced in March 2018, in an ongoing trade dispute with China about its alleged intellectual property theft and unfair trade practices.

India is also becoming a popular alternative to China.

Quote"We expect the significant shift of manufacturing out of China to be a multi-year trend and a potential golden opportunity for India," wrote Gautam Chhaochharia, the head of Indian research at investment bank UBS, in an opinion article published by The Economic Times on May 10.

He explained that the trend of moving away from China would continue even if a trade deal is to be signed, citing India's attractiveness as a manufacturing destination, such as the ease of doing business.

China of all places, needs to be realistic about manual labor. Automation is a job killer, and not dealing fairly is killing them 3 fold.
First off companies are leaving China, companies that have been there for decades, established a business model that was based on cheap labor intensive production, most of these industries were eyeing the future towards getting away from manual labor to automation anyway.
So what did China do? They shot themselves in both feet. They could have had an guaranteed industry moving towards automation, building automation for the rest of the world.
So not only do they lose one industry, they lose a second and a shot at preserving their business model, they just shipped off their job mkt, and guaranteed it will never ever return.
This was not the time for them to allow their Chinese pride, racism and arrogance to get in the way, this was the time to join the rest of the world and play by a fair and established way of doing business trade.

China just cemented their fate. They were in recession, now they'll be in a solid depression. They have but two options, continue to be assholes and suffer their fate, or come back, hat and ass in hand begging for forgiveness.
I'm betting on change coming quickly in China and  they'll swallow their pride and come back begging.

The latest is China is signaling they may leverage their rare Earth materials production, required for electronics components.  The usual suspects in the media are saying they have Trump in a box, and we might as well surrender and go back to the way things were.

The reality is Trump anticipated this and issued an executive order in 2017:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/energy-environment/wp/2017/12/19/zinke-wants-to-expand-critical-minerals-production-saying-we-are-vulnerable-as-a-nation/

QuotePresident Trump signed an executive order Wednesday instructing his deputies to devise "a strategy to reduce the Nation's reliance on critical minerals" that are largely imported and used to produce everything from smartphones to weaponry.

The directive comes a day after the U.S. Geological Survey published its first assessment of the country's critical minerals resources since 1973, an analysis the agency began in 2013. The report concludes that 20 out of the 23 critical minerals the nation relies on are sourced from China.

"The United States must not remain reliant on foreign competitors like Russia and China for the critical minerals needed to keep our economy strong and our country safe," Trump said in a statement.

Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke, who has backed expanded mining production on federal land, has lobbied the White House to make the issue of critical minerals a top policy priority. He briefed reporters on the new USGS report Tuesday, saying "we are vulnerable as a nation" because we rely so heavily on imports from China.

While the United States has significant deposits of most of the critical minerals it currently buys from overseas, market considerations largely drive mining. The United States was ranked as the world's largest producer of such minerals until 1995, but since then, China has led the globe.

"It is time for the U.S. to take a leading position," Zinke said. "And it's not that we don't have the minerals in the U.S. It's likely we do."

The executive order says that the federal government will be "identifying new sources of critical minerals" and "increasing activity at all levels of the supply chain, including exploration, mining, concentration, separation, alloying, recycling and reprocessing critical minerals."

Of course, even though China is the dominate player in rare Earth materials production, there's other sources:

Oh Good God! The left, the media and Chinese are stupid! We have these minerals, problem is the EPA regs in this country made it near impossible to mine. We have a mine here in Ca, sits in what is essentially desert coast range, no one lives there, it's freakin desolate and this guy has a large productive mine, open pit style if memory serves me..
He's been fighting to expand, because that's what you do when you mine, you follow the mineral, but both State and Fed are making it near impossible for his business to grow.

Anyway, that was under the Marxist Admin, I don't know how it is now. Point being, we have these so called rare earth minerals, which aren't all that rare, just a misnomer someone stuck on them.
This country is full of minerals, and China trying to leverage trade with but proves they are not good faith trading partners and it's time to kick their ass to the curb.

I believe in buying "value" for our goods and services. I am on my third Toyota Camry and find it an excellent value. Compared to American made cars I found it satisfied my needs especially while working as I use my car for traveling. I do use a local company for cable and internet. I could use AT&T for a little less, but willing to pay more for the local service. All customer service people are local and answer the phone in English I can understand. So to answer your question, I used the free market system and buy the best "value" for us.

Same here, and if Japan is making a better product, then supporting them sends a message to American manufacturers.
I bought a Subaru built in Japan, great vehicle, and I bought it for its quality alone. But again, China isn't making quality, anything, 90% of what they mass produce cheap shit, case in point, they notoriously steal American and copy it, but the quality isn't there, a lot of their stuff is short term use, then you throw it away because it's cheaper to replace it than fix it, by design.

Personally I'm tired of replacing their crap and because they locked up the mkt, there isn't any choice, you're stuck buying Chinese.
Hell, even Craftsman is made in China now since they were bought out.

I think so... especially with more of it made here.  Like Trump said in that one campaign stop, try to find a big screen TV made in the US.  It would be great for those companies to move back here and we have the option to buy American for most of our products, or the cheap shit.

It's hilarious because China was the biggest benefactor of the NAFTA deal.  Now, after Canada's manufacturing got shut down via the environazis, and with Trump shutting down Chinese content, Canada needs to figure out how to start producing stuff like steel.  They are getting pulled apart at the seams, and China is kicking their asses, even though Canada imports more than exports to China.

Then, the geniuses in Mexico are going to raise their minimum wage, which will be the opposite of the sucking sound Perot mentioned in the 92 debates.

QuoteTOKYO (Reuters) - Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will treat U.S. President Donald Trump to an imperial banquet, front row seats at a sumo tournament and a trip to the country's biggest warship on a state visit as Tokyo seeks to avoid a bust-up over trade.

New Japanese Emperor Naruhito and Harvard-educated Empress Masako will host a lavish dinner for Trump during his stay through May 28, part of a display meant to showcase the two countries' alliance.

The U.S. leader will become the first foreign dignitary to be so honored since the monarch inherited the throne this month. Trump will also play golf with Abe and inspect Japan's Kaga helicopter carrier.

At their summit on Monday, Trump and Abe are expected to discuss topics from North Korea's nuclear and missile programs and China's economic and military rise to two-way trade at a time when Washington is embroiled in a trade war with Beijing.

"Various issues will come up during President Trump's visit but I don't think they will be so severe," Kenji Wakamiya, chairman of the lower house foreign affairs committee, told a Reuters News seminar this week. "I don't think (demands) will be as harsh as towards China."

QuoteAfter the U.S. government increased tariffs on $200 billion of Chinese goods to 25 percent from 10 percent, China retaliated with tariff increases on $60 billion worth of U.S. goods.

According to the tariff list compiled by China's Customs Tariff Commission, nearly 100 U.S.-made pharmaceuticals, medicines, and medical devices from the United States are now subject to added duties.

Chinese netizens expressed outrage, noting that many are life-saving drugs for critically ill patients. For some drugs, there are few or no alternative products made by Chinese pharmaceutical companies.

Among the drugs and medical products slapped with 25 percent tariffs are human insulin for diabetes treatment; leukotriene for asthma treatment; adrenocortical hormones, used to treat a number of illnesses, including acute infections and autoimmune disease; and radiocontrast agents used to enhance the visibility of internal structures in X-ray-based imaging.

Audiometers, which are devices used to measure hearing acuity; blood pressure measurement instruments; and dental X-ray instruments are among products under 20 percent tariffs.

While the anti-globalist wave is sweeping the world, let's not forget India.  Their pro-business candidate "stunned" everyone and shoc.... well, you know the script by now.

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-india-election/indias-modi-stuns-opposition-with-huge-election-win-idUSKCN1SS2YR

QuoteNEW DELHI/AYODHYA (Reuters) - Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi scored a dramatic election victory on Thursday, putting his Hindu nationalist party on course to increase its majority on a mandate of business-friendly policies and a tough stand on national security.

His re-election reinforces a global trend of right-wing populists sweeping to victory, from the United States to Brazil and Italy, often after adopting harsh positions on protectionism, immigration and defense.

Official data from the Election Commission showed Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party ahead in 302 of the 542 seats up for grabs, up from the 282 it won in 2014 and more than the 272 seats needed for a majority in the lower house of parliament.

That would give his party the first back-to-back majority for a single party since 1984. Votes will be fully counted by Friday morning.

Modi was showered with rose petals by some of the thousands of cheering supporters who waited for hours in a thunderstorm for his arrival at party headquarters on Thursday evening.

https://www.theepochtimes.com/great-progress-made-in-trade-negotiations-with-japan-trump-says-during-state-visit_2937656.html

QuotePresident Donald Trump on May 26 said that "great progress" has been made in bilateral trade negotiations with Japan, signaling that a new deal with the Asian superpower will favor the United States more than the current arrangement.

Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe spent the day together on May 26 placing their close personal relationship on display, as tensions flared with mutual adversaries around the world. The pair smiled and chatted as they played golf, attended a sumo wrestling match, and dined at a hibachi restaurant.

According to Trump, the two leaders discussed trade and military matters ahead of a day of formal meetings on May 27. Washington and Tokyo are negotiating a bilateral trade deal. Trump views the existing relationship as tilted in Japan's favor and has directed U.S. trade negotiators to secure a more fair deal.

"I think we had a very productive day and tomorrow, likewise, will be a very productive day," Trump said as he sat beside First Lady Melania Trump at the start of the dinner with Abe and his spouse, Akie Abe. The two couples dined at a hibachi restaurant, where dishes are handed to diners on a long paddle.

Japan hasn't admired a President like this, since Reagan. I've been watching this all weekend, they really like and admire trump, unlike Obozo who they tactfully compared to an impetuous child, Trump has embraced Japanese culture and tradition with total respect, it even showed when he presented the trophy cup to the wrestler. Pure class!
Trump just doubled Japan's appreciation and trust for the US in just a weekend.

QuoteScores of Chinese high-tech companies listed on U.S. exchanges are seeing their stock prices fall in recent weeks, as uncertainty surrounding U.S.-China trade talks have caused U.S. investors to lose confidence in their potential.

But wait, remember when I talked about this and just how bad off China is and they have no place to make threats?

QuoteU.S.-China Tech War
Stock prices represent market confidence in a company. China, Hong Kong, and U.S. stock markets have responded to the latest developments in the U.S.-China trade war via the Chinese technology companies' stock prices, Gao Shanwen, the chief economist at China Essence Securities, said during a May 16 company strategy conference.

"The Chinese economy is slowing, due to falling consumption as a result of the trade war," Gao said. He explained that tech companies' products are servicing consumers. But investors are worried that Chinese consumers wouldn't buy as much as before, as ripple effects from the trade tariffs take a further toll on the already-slowing economy.

Already in 2018, retail sales in China grew at the slowest rate in 15 years.

"The [tariff] burden would be shouldered by Chinese listed companies in China and overseas. Their total estimated losses will be 58 times that of investment," Gao predicted.

https://www.scmp.com/economy/china-economy/article/3012460/does-china-have-enough-us-dollars-trade-war-escalates

QuoteThe Chinese government is officially sitting on the world's largest stockpile of foreign exchange reserves, but it has been scrambling recently to block backchannels for capital outflows as trade tensions with the United States increase.

Beijing's increasing scrutiny of the usage of the US dollar by Chinese companies and individuals, in the absence of any immediate signs of a financial crisis, along with accelerating efforts to lure in foreign capital, have raised suspicions among analysts that the world's second-largest economy is worried about the risk of running short of the US dollar.

On the surface, China should be the last country in the world to worry about a shortage – about two-thirds of its US$3.1 trillion worth of foreign exchange reserves, the world's largest, are believed to be held in US dollar-denominated assets.

But the huge foreign reserves and a relatively stable currency do no reflect the true stresses underlying the economy, analysts said, because the concerns are that those reserves may not be enough to provide the safety buffer needed to pay for China's imports and pay off its debt in adverse circumstances if the yuan faced a devaluation or a sharp drop in value.

Analysts, though, doubt that China would be subject to an imminent balance of payment crisis similar to the one that Argentina experienced last year. The Latin American country was hit by a currency crisis and stagflation because of structural deficiencies that constrained real demand and prevented the economy from growing sustainably.

"If there was a sudden shock to the country, China would not have enough US dollars to support its own currency," said Kevin Lai, chief economist for Asia excluding Japan, at Daiwa Capital Markets. "So that is why China needs to stop money outflows while creating inflows to support the yuan."

China bought US dollars (a Grenade to be used against us) as a way of gaining control of American mkts. Sure, they are long term strategists when it comes to making inroads into other countries, (think Silk Road).
Problem is, Americans understand capital, we know how best to make profit in a fair playing field, China only understands manipulation.

President Donald Trump on June 2 described Mexico as an "abuser" of the United States and offered an ultimatum: either stop the "invasion" along the southern border or U.S. companies will be "brought back" through new tariffs imposed on Mexican goods.

Trump made the comments in a string of early morning posts on Twitter following his announcement on May 30 that he is imposing a 5 percent tariff on Mexico, which would increase until Mexico starts taking action on the border crisis. Most of the illegal aliens coming across the border are coming through Mexico from Central America.

In Trump's latest remarks, he outlined how Mexico hasn't been treating the United States fairly, describing a turbulent relationship between the two countries. He ended one of his posts with "America has had enough!"

"People have been saying for years that we should talk to Mexico. The problem is that Mexico is an "abuser" of the United States, taking but never giving. It has been this way for decades," he wrote.

"Either they stop the invasion of our Country by Drug Dealers, Cartels, Human Traffickers... Coyotes and Illegal Immigrants, which they can do very easily, or our many companies and jobs that have been foolishly allowed to move South of the Border, will be brought back into the United States through taxation (Tariffs)."

https://www.theepochtimes.com/beijing-claims-to-have-three-trump-cards-in-us-china-trade-war-expert-breaks-down-why-they-wont-work_2946516.html

QuoteFirst, there are alternative suppliers of rare-earth elements that the United States could turn to.

"Brazil, Russia, the United States, and Japan all have rare earth reserves. In Japan, rare earth ores are found at the ocean bottom surrounding Minami-Tori-shima island," Xie explained.

Last April, Japan discovered 16 million tons worth of rare earth deposits off the island, which scientists said would provide hundreds of years' worth of rare earth minerals.

China dominates the world's production of rare earths with a near-monopoly.

It has mainly achieved this by Chinese companies intentionally lowering prices of rare-earth metals, force their competitors into bankruptcy—and then purchasing mines from the failed competitors.

Xie explained in his commentary that China cannot afford to play the "rare earth trump card" for its own interests.

"If China cuts off its rare earth supply to the United States, prices for rare earth elements will go up. In turn, United States, Brazil, and India will resume the rare earth mining industry. When they reach a reasonable production capacity, China will lose this market, and very likely lose it for good," he wrote.

Believe it or not, they are taught to hate all races, they are the epitome racist. Chinese believe they are the superior race, so it's OK to screw over everyone you do business with, including provinces with the country, where the poor are taken advantage of because they're seen as inferior.

The third, which Jin said he considers to be the most powerful card, is to shut off the Chinese market to American companies. Many U.S. companies that rely more on the China market than their domestic markets would immediately suffer losses, he predicted."

I know... especially the one about how the businesspeople get over there and once there, they can't go back...  From our China article on Hardliner:

Quote
As we begin to buy from other countries, and we block China from stealing our tech and IP, we'll drop them back to the third world where they belong.  We gave them a shot and they abused us so they need to pay.  As for American companies moving from China, simply leaving is easier than it sounds for many reasons.

For the non-business owners, which entails the overwhelming majority of financial pundits on TV, moving a company sucks.  When you're in charge of making a decision to move a department, production, or outsource a service elsewhere, your credibility is on the line.  After you put the deal together, get the partners on board, get the budget and financing together, and execute the move, it's a big deal and causes a lot of stress in the company.  Once the train leaves the proverbial station, you don't get off until the move is over.

If you pull out or things go south, you lose credibility with your partners, or if you're an executive, you'll likely not be with the company much longer.  That's why I can understand from a business owner's perspective why many of them stay, even as the Chinese ramps up the abuse.

Why can't they just behave like normal humans in the global marketplace.  Why are they stuck on this stupid global domination crap?

Why cant they just go back to being good little isolationists like they were for most of their history? Yes there were times when they used the silk road but China has frequently pulled back and closed its boarders due to xenophobia. They were actually more advanced than the west at one point (middle ages) but their isolationism kept them from expanding and colonizing like the west did, and the west overtook them technologically.

They have been looking for a new world monopoly since they lost the secrets of silkworms hundreds of years ago.

This is for those having a hard time wrapping their mind around the China Trade War.

China went into this without a single card, Trump held every "Trump" card. No pun intended...
As a business owner, the one thing you fear most is competition, be it a lemonade stand, fast food, or grocery store, they all have potential to cut your profits dramatically in half, or kill your business.
Trump viewed China as competition, he weighed his options and saw that he could win an outright trade war because we had already given China everything it wanted, needed and more, so for them, it was a lose lose proposition where negotiations were concerned.

So what happens when you are in business? You look to squash the competition, make them suffer enough to pull up stakes and seek a new location, or, if you are liquid and have the capital, you leverage a buy out and expand.
Trump offered them a great deal considering the impending consequence that is, but they turned Trump down. This was a huge mistake on the part of the Chinese, they still do not understand Capitalism.
Trump put them in a position of "take it or leave it", they left it, but here's the clincher. The Chinese are realizing just how badly they screwed themselves by playing what they thought was Trump's bluff, they assumed he would fold like all the other worthless leaders before him, they thought he feared public pressure and Wall Street. They thought wrong!

Trump doesn't bluff, he does his homework, he knows just how far to push, he knew China was in no position to bargain and he used that against them. I repeat this because now the Chinese think they can come back to the table and accept his original offer, but in business, it doesn't work that way, especially when you see your competition hemorrhaging money.
Their economy was already on the skids, employment is struggling, reports over the last two years out of China by the Chinese Govt claimed they'd be in a predictable 30 year mild recession (on Chinese measures), a recession in any Western economy would be crippling by comparison.
India, Nam, Brazil are all emerging competition for China. Trump went out and made deals with all of them, befriended them like never before. See how he set the field before his strike against China?

That's Right, he hated the way China was abusing American industry and was Hell bent on correcting this mistake and bringing business back to the States.

China is no longer in a position to bargain, they will be forced to accept whatever Trump offers and be glad they even got any deal.
The question is, will Trump give them any deal at all?

Basically, Trump created the competition that Trump needed to have leverage with China. He showed these other countries they had a shot at the largest market in the world - the USA. The Chinese did not believe he could and would do this. This is another prime example of Trump thinking outside the normal political and diplomatic boxes.

Beat me to it.

The United States is pursuing the sale of more than $2 billion worth of tanks and weapons to Taiwan, four people familiar with the negotiations said, sparking anger from Beijing which is already involved in an escalating trade war with Washington.

An informal notification of the proposed sale has been sent to the U.S. Congress, the four sources said on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak about the possible deal.

The potential sale included 108 General Dynamics Corp M1A2 Abrams tanks worth around $2 billion as well as anti-tank and anti-aircraft munitions, three of the sources said. Taiwan has been interested in refreshing its existing U.S.-made battle tank inventory, which includes M60 Patton tanks.

The congressional notifications included a variety of anti-tank munitions, including 409 Raytheon Co and Lockheed Martin Corp-made Javelin missiles worth as much as $129 million, two of the sources said.

The notifications also included 1,240 TOW anti-tank missiles worth as much as $299 million, one of the sources said. There were also 250 stinger missiles worth as much as $223 million in the notification, the source said.

Stingers are often used in portable anti-aircraft weapons systems.

As Benny Hill used to say, "Odumtubud" Oh Damn Too Bad...

The Chinese government condemned the planned sale.

"We are severely concerned about the U.S. move and are firmly against U.S. arms sales to Taiwan," Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang told a daily news briefing in Beijing.

China urges the United States to stop arms sales to Taiwan and prudently deal with issues relating to Taiwan to prevent harm to bilateral relations and peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, he added.

Oh, so soddy....

https://news.yahoo.com/arrest-of-los-alamos-scientist-opens-new-front-in-crackdown-on-chinese-infiltration-of-us-labs-172208027.html

QuoteWASHINGTON — The indictment last week of a former researcher at Los Alamos National Laboratory in Santa Fe, N.M., appears to signal a new front in the government's crackdown on China's efforts to get access to sensitive U.S. scientific research.

Turab Lookman, 67, a theoretical physicist, was charged with lying on three occasions about his contacts with the Thousand Talents Plan, a Chinese government program aimed at funding and recruiting international experts. He has pleaded not guilty in federal court in Albuquerque.

Lookman was not charged with sharing secrets with the Chinese government, but with lying about research grants he received under the program. The Thousand Talents Plan has become a contentious issue between the U.S. and China owing to its focus on cutting-edge, often dual-use research. Los Alamos Labs, part of the Department of Energy, was where the atom bomb was developed and continues to host ongoing sensitive research on nuclear technology and other areas of national security, making it a prime target for infiltration.

Several previous DOJ cases since then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced his China Initiative in November 2018 have focused on intellectual-property theft from the private sector, Chinese state-sponsored hacking and Chinese recruitment of former U.S. intelligence officers. Cracking down on Chinese efforts to obtain information on basic scientific research is another, apparently new part of the initiative.

Like anyone who took economics in college in the past several decades I was taught that free trade good, tariffs bad. I read the same from conservative economics people in the press.  I always try to look at both sides of an issue and recently, in foreign affairs, find myself agreeing with the other side. I never really looked at the free trade issue.

How much of the free trade issue is dogma? How much can be empircally examined? Yes I know the arguments are that tariffs harm both sides are partially true. How do the benefits of no tariffs compare with the harm of no tariffs to people in the US? AND which people in the US?

I know that no tariffs means cheaper stuff for US consumers, but is that the only metric worth examining?  When manufacturing workers have their lives destroyed and their towns along with them how is that negative figured into the equation? I doubt that it is.

In an ideal scenario, that's what you want.

What's the "other side"?

Quote

Elaborate.  I'm not sure I'm following...

Quote
How much of the free trade issue is dogma? How much can be empircally examined? Yes I know the arguments are that tariffs harm both sides are partially true. How do the benefits of no tariffs compare with the harm of no tariffs to people in the US? AND which people in the US?
Take China, for example.  Let's say they want to shut down an industry here in the US that is important for our infrastructure and national security: steel.  Being a communist country, they subsidize steel production and create a ridiculous amount of supply without a care in the world for cost, then dump it here to the United States for less than what it takes us to manufacture and produce it.  Think about that.  Meanwhile, as they are killing our steel industry, they laugh as the "conservatives" here run around an inaccurately point to Adam Smith about tariffs, screaming "what about free trade?!?!".  These people are retarded parrots who have no solution on how to bring China to heel, and really have no understanding, or frankly care, about what China does to us.

Quote
I know that no tariffs means cheaper stuff for US consumers,
That's not necessarily true.  Many times businesses head to China with the hope of tapping into the market of a billion people.  Once they find out it's fool's gold, it's too  late.

Quote
but is that the only metric worth examining?
If it is, the United States is making more sense every day.  Our energy costs are dropping, and productivity is increasing, which means we can generate more output with less labor than China can with outdated machinery, tech, etc.

Quote
When manufacturing workers have their lives destroyed and their towns along with them how is that negative figured into the equation? I doubt that it is.
That's correct.  Not only that, China targets those towns SPECIFICALLY with dumping fentanyl.

I did an article to try and sort some of this out: https://conservativehardliner.com/we-should-stop-doing-business-china

Let's assume China quits exporting to the US. Could or would prices suddenly skyrocket?
Based on the top 10 exports China makes, I'd say we'd probably never even notice, outside of a small increase in prices over a period of time.
I'm no expert, but I know for a fact we produce some of what is on this list and could easily begin full production of the remaining products.

The following export product groups represent the highest dollar value in Chinese global shipments during 2018. Also shown is the percentage share each export category represents in terms of overall exports from China.

Electrical machinery, equipment: US$664.4 billion (26.6% of total exports)
Machinery including computers: $430 billion (17.2%)
Furniture, bedding, lighting, signs, prefab buildings: $96.4 billion (3.9%)
Plastics, plastic articles: $80.1 billion (3.2%)
Vehicles: $75.1 billion (3%)
Knit or crochet clothing, accessories: $73.5 billion (2.9%)
Clothing, accessories (not knit or crochet): $71.4 billion (2.9%)
Optical, technical, medical apparatus: $71.4 billion (2.9%)
Articles of iron or steel: $65.6 billion (2.6%)
Organic chemicals: $59.8 billion (2.4%)
China's top 10 exports accounted for approximately two-thirds (67.7%) of the overall value of its global shipments.

Organic chemicals represent the fastest-growing among China's top 10 export categories from 2017 to 2018, thanks to a 20.2% gain.

In second place for improving export sales was the 15.6% increase for the articles made from iron or steel category.

China's exported plastics and items made from plastic posted the third-fastest gain in value, up 14.5% year over year.

The sole decliner among the top 10 Chinese exports was unknitted and non-crocheted clothing and accessories which declined by -2.7%.

Yep. It could bring these industries back to the USA if not picked up by other countries. If it becomes the responsibility of US companies it would mean there is no foreign competition. I think how our country responded for WW II reflects what we are capable of.

QuoteA short while ago, I wrote about possible benefits from President Trump's newly signed Tariff/Immigration Enforcement deal with Mexico. I posited that since our trade relationship with Mexico (and Canada) has improved relative to the one with China, U.S. trade companies would look to source their products in countries other than China. I speculated that Mexico, Canada and/or the Pacific Rim would benefit from this. Now comes some confirmation from the street.

QuoteSo I gave him a jingle. In a lengthly interview covering a number of international trade topics, "Jim," pretty much said, "I'm done with China." Jim's company designs and markets home consumer goods. He pointed out the huge risk China is taking by failing to take President Trump seriously in this tariff fight. In market segments like Jim's, which require molds, jigs and/or specialized tooling, a move away from a current supplier, is only taken in expectation of a huge increase in revenue-profit and/or to obtain relief from restrictive or punitive regulation or costs. 25 percent tariffs put China at far more risk than the United States.

QuoteSmack in the middle of a trade war with the U.S., China is facing a food shortage that's raising prices for consumers. If officials can't keep inflation in check, President Donald Trump's Twitter tantrums will be the least of their worries.

African swine fever is decimating China's pig population. The country's stock fell 21%, or by nearly 73 million pigs, from March 2018 through April 2019, according to official statistics. Unofficially, however, industry experts whisper about slides of more than 40% to 50%. That would be comparable to wiping out all the pigs in the U.S. and Europe combined. For a country that derives most of its protein consumption from pork, this is a problem.

Hong Kong protesters claim turnout of 2 million

Two million people reportedly took the streets in Hong Kong on Sunday to protest legislation that would allow residents of the island to be extradited to mainland China for trial.

Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam apologized in a public statement for mishandling the issue, but declined to say she would step down or scrap the legislation, Reuters reported. The extradition bill was postponed indefinitely Saturday in response to earlier protests.

A former British protectorate, Hong Kong is part of China but retains considerable economic and political independence under a policy dubbed, "One country, two systems." Residents of the island have long been wary of any effort to place it under more direct control by Beijing. The extradition legislation became a flash point because of concerns over Beijing's record on human rights and criminal justice. Sunday's protesters demanded that the Beijing-endorsed extradition bill be completely withdrawn.

In response to a question, Trump said he had made no promises to China about new tariffs in the coming months.

At the bilateral meeting, Trump and Bolsonaro agreed to deepen the trade and investment relations between Brazil and the United States, according to the White House.

"The leaders recommitted to supporting the Venezuelan people, as Venezuelans reclaim their democracy and their freedom," the White House statement said, adding that they also talked about the risks associated with China's growing influence in the western hemisphere.

Yep, China is far too arrogant to bend on trade, they'd just as soon 10 million of their own people starve rather than concede to fair trade.
I think that's just what they're going to get as their country suffers as business flees the sinking Chinese Junk.

QuoteBEIJING, July 4 (Reuters) - Existing U.S. tariffs will have to be removed if there is to be a trade deal between Beijing and Washington, China's commerce ministry said on Thursday.

The leaders of the two countries agreed last weekend to relaunch trade talks that had stalled in May after U.S. officials accused China of pulling back from commitments made in the text of a pact negotiators had said was nearly finished.

Trade teams from both countries are in contact, commerce ministry spokesman Gao Feng told a regular media briefing.

To get talks restarted, U.S. President Donald Trump had agreed not to put tariffs on about $300 billion in additional Chinese imports and ease curbs on Chinese tech giant Huawei.

The United States now has tariffs of 25% on $250 billion of Chinese goods, ranging from furniture to semiconductors.

China welcomes the U.S. decision not to slap new tariffs on its goods, Gao said, when asked how long the trade truce can last. (Reporting by Stella Qiu and Ryan Woo; Editing by Clarence Fernandez)

Local officials and workers in China's Guangdong and Jiangsu provinces may have to brace for lost revenue and jobs as Korean tech giant Samsung has reportedly decided to wind up its last production lines and leave the country for good.

There have been reports that Samsung's factory in Huizhou city in Guangdong – where some of its best-selling handsets like the Galaxy smartphone series were assembled – will shut down, following similar closures in Shenzhen and Tianjin in northern China.

The Huizhou base kept the local economy ticking during its heyday as it churned out electronic products for Chinese buyers and for export to the US and Europe. But rumors started to swirl right after the Chinese New Year break in February that the factory would lay off workers soon.

The backdrop is that the protracted US-China trade war has started to bite and domestic rivals like Huawei, Oppo and Xiaomi have been chipping away at Samsung's market share.

QuoteThe labor force participation rate (chart) ticked slightly higher from 62.8% to 62.9%, while the employment-population ratio was 60.6% for the fourth month in a row.

Manufacturing employment kicked back into gear, gaining +17,000 . in June after 4 months of little change. Manufacturing employment has averaged 8,000 per month, compared with an average of 22,000 in 2018.

Construction employment continued a solid upward trend, adding 21,000 in June. That's on par with the average monthly gain over the prior 12 months.

In June, wages, or average hourly earnings (AHEs), for all employees on private nonfarm payrolls rose by 6 cents to $27.90. That's after a 9-cent gain in May.

Over the past 12 months, average hourly earnings (chart) have increased by 3.1%. Wage growth has exceeded 3% for the 11th straight month.

Average hourly earnings of private-sector production and nonsupervisory employees increased by 4 cents to $23.43 in June.

QuoteThe Institute for Supply Management (ISM) Non-Manufacturing Index (NMI) indicated solid and sustainable growth for the U.S. service sector in June. The NMI came in at a solid 55.1%, though was 1.8 percentage points lower than the May reading of 56.9%.

Although the non-manufacturing sector's growth rate dipped in June, the sector continues to reflect strength," Anthony Nieves, Chair of the ISM Non-Manufacturing Business Survey Committee, said.

This is the lowest reading since July 2017, when it registered 55.1%. However, that indicates solid growth for the U.S. service sector without showing signs of overheating.

The New Orders Index came in at a strong 55.8%, though 2.8 percentage points lower than the reading of 58.6% in May. The Employment Index also fell 3.1 percentage points in June to 55% from the May reading of 58.1%.

But those are all solid and sustainable readings.

"The comments from the respondents reflect mixed sentiment about business conditions and the overall economy. A degree of uncertainty exists due to trade and tariffs."

The 16 non-manufacturing industries reporting growth in June — listed in order — are:

    Real Estate, Rental & Leasing;
    Other Services;
    Finance & Insurance;
    Accommodation & Food Services;
    Health Care & Social Assistance;
    Mining;
    Construction;
    Educational Services;
    Professional, Scientific & Technical Services;
    Utilities; Public Administration;
    Information;
    Management of Companies & Support Services;
    Transportation & Warehousing;
    Retail Trade; and Wholesale Trade.

The only industry to report a decrease was Arts, Entertainment & Recreation.

We talked about this a couple of years ago. How countries develop and eventually they run out of cheap labor, leaving Africa at the end of the scale. But then what?
In truth, it was never a sustainable business plan.
But what do people like Soros do? They destroy economies and feeding off them like the leech he is, opening up new markets for cheap slave labor. Problem is, this leads to wars.
Kind of exposes how the entire system works, or rather used to work. Trump is turning it all upside down and the elites are freakin out.

US-China Trade Talks Close Without Progress, Analyst Says China Unlikely to Uphold Commitments

Trade talks between the United States and China ended without any significant progress after negotiators worked to reach a deal to end the long-running trade war.

U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin met with Chinese officials briefly for dinner in Shanghai on July 30 and left the next day after scheduling talks to take place in the United States in September.

Frank Xie, John M. Olin Foundation Palmetto Chair Professor in Business at the University of South Carolina Aiken, said the Chinese communist regime should not be trusted to fulfill their agreements.

"Look at what happened in Hong Kong right now," Xie told The Epoch Times. "They had this deal, they had this agreement with the British. They said they were going to keep that system unchanged for 50 years, now see what they're doing.

"They're trying to impose the communist dictatorship. The rule of no law, the Chinese rule on the people of Hong Kong."

Xie says back when China accessed the World Trade Organization in 2001, they agreed to many terms and conditions and kept none of those promises.

"You're facing a regime that has no credibility," said Xie. "Very brutal. We just passed 30 years of the June 4th Tiananmen Square massacre ... and then just another 20 years of the persecution of Falun Gong, so you can see this is a regime that is so brutal."

This is a long read, but it will bring you up to date on missile deployment and how it will force China to come to the table.
It will also deter the thought of China screwing with Taiwan.

Free From INF Treaty, US Plans to Deploy Mid-Range Missiles to Deter China

The United States, now unbound from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces treaty with Russia, plans to deploy ground-launched missiles to counter China's growing arsenal and deter potential conflict, according to the heads of the State Department and the Pentagon.

Following more than a decade of violations by Russia, the United States withdrew from the treaty on Aug. 2. While Washington and Moscow remained formally bound by the treaty from flight-testing or possessing intermediate-range, ground-launched missiles, China aggressively developed these weapons, a strategic gap that has long been a concern for the Pentagon.

Secretary of Defense Mark Esper told reporters that the Pentagon's position is to deploy non-nuclear INF-range missiles systems "sooner rather than later." Esper specifically noted these systems' importance to the Asia-Pacific region. He hoped to have a deployment within "months" but noted that "these things tend to take longer than you expect."

"So, the best answer is, sooner rather than later,

It is about time. The US was the source for steel and cars 40 years ago but then the globalists took charge and used the US as a money well to suck dry. The top steel producer is not US steel anymore. This highest rank US company is Nucor in the number 12 spot. What did liberals get out of it? Less pollution = No. The other countries were unregulated and just blackened the skies at 10 times the rate per ton.  More jobs = No. They got less. China made sure the materials were cheaper but still too expensive for US manufacturers to compete with the finiched goods from  China. Higher pay? No, the wages have dropped with the prices.

It took the GOP to write the budget with all that pork so they could sit back knowing full well all people would see is the guy signing it. You and I knew the truth, but the majority of Americans were clueless and think Presidents write the law and their own budgets.

Point is, the GOP started doing what the left has done for decades, build on the others failures. Look back at the EPA, Nixon was budget cutting, so he lumped the EPA in with a bunch of agencies for consolidation, the left seized on this and expanded the organization and made it a weapon against production. Bush and the Patriot Act, the left ran with it when they got in power, as if it was part of the plan.
Neither party ever gave a shit about the working man, only their constituents, and when NAFTA went into law, both the Dims and GOP constituency base expanded into majority foreign interests.

Trump on China: 'I'm Not Ready to Make a Deal'

President Donald Trump Aug. 9 said he was not ready to strike a trade deal with Beijing, criticizing the Chinese regime for manipulating its currency and reneging on its pledges.

"They would like to make a deal. I'm not ready to make a deal,"  Trump told reporters at the White House before his departure for fundraising events in New York.

"China wants to settle this deal. They've had the worst year that they've had in many, many decades and it's getting only worse. Thousands of companies are leaving China," he said.

The next round of trade talks with the Chinese delegation is planned to take place in Washington next month.

When asked if he would cancel the next meeting Trump said, "Maybe, I will see what happens. Right now the talks are scheduled in September. Whether or not they cancel, we'll see."

We all know they told Kim to fire them off, problem is, Kim and Trump have an agreement not to fire intercontinental ballistic missiles, not short range ballistic rockets, and Kim held to that agreement.
Did Kim just snub China?
Well, he did launch a missile at their request, but in truth, he refused to break his personal promise to Trump, so in essence, he did snub China.

The Chinese were "desperate" to influence relations between the United States and North Korea, Chang added. He told Fox News host Bill Hemmer that the Chinese were likely behind the missile tests and used it as a way of pushing Trump to back down from the intense trade pressure he's been imposing on their economy.

Beijing has urged Washington to cancel the sale of American F-16 fighter planes to Taiwan, vowing sanctions against US companies that take part in the deal in order "to protect [China's] interests."
"We demand from the United States to adhere to joint agreements and immediately cancel the supply plan. Otherwise, Washington will have to answer for all the consequences," Gen Shuang, official representative of China's Foreign Ministry, said at a news briefing on Wednesday. He stressed that the Taiwan issue relates to purely internal problems of China, and Beijing will firmly defend its interests on the matter, even if it comes to sanctions.

"China will take all possible measures to protect its own interests, including sanctions against US companies that will participate in these arms transfers to Taipei," he summed up.

The US State Department on Tuesday approved the sale of 66 Lockheed Martin-built F-16 fighter planes to Taiwan. Washington openly admitted that the $8 billion (€7.2 billion) sale serves US economic and national security interests in the region, reasoning that additional arms will help maintain "political stability, military balance, and economic progress" there.
China, which claims Taiwan as part of its territory, strongly objected to the move ahead of its approval. Relations between Beijing and Taipei have been strained since 2016, when current Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen and his pro-independence Democratic Progressive Party came to power. Beijing believes Ing-wen is planning to secure formal independence for the island with help from the United States.

The latest weapons deal is not the first US attempt to arm Taiwan. Last month, the US State Department approved a $2.2 billion (€1.8 billion) arms package to Taipei that includes M1A2T Abrams tanks as well as surface-to-air missiles.

Fuglosi tries to insert herself upon the world stage in an embarrassing move in hopes of derailing Trump's UK Trade deal.

Trump promises "very big trade deal" with U.K. as Brexit deadline looms
President Donald Trump and Britain's Prime Minister Boris Johnson arrive for a bilateral meeting during the G7 summit on August 25, 2019 in Biarritz, France

President Donald Trump promised Britain Sunday a "very big trade deal" with the U.S. — "bigger than we've ever had with the U.K." — and declared British Prime Minister Boris Johnson the "right man" to oversee Brexit, Reuters reports.

The big picture: Trump said Britain leaving the EU would be like losing "an anchor round the ankle," per the BBC. But as the Oct. 31 Brexit deadline looms, it is still unclear whether the United Kingdom can leave the European Union with an agreement in place or, indeed, whether the U.K. will leave the EU. Johnson has vowed it will happen "do or die," but experts warn that leaving without a deal could have catastrophic consequences.

The U.K. is seeking a comprehensive free trade deal with the U.S. post-Brexit, Reuters notes. U.S. officials including Trump's national security adviser John Bolton envision free-trade deals ahead of a comprehensive trade agreement.
Johnson was meeting with European Council President Donald Tusk Sunday. He's expected to tell Tusk the U.K. would only pay about 9 billion pounds ($11 billion) of the 39 billion-pound liability agreed by former U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May, according to Sky News.
Yes, but: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) have ruled out a trade deal with U.K. if Brexit creates a hard border with Ireland and violates the Good Friday Agreement, which helped bring peace to Northern Ireland in the 1990s. Congress must approve all U.S. trade deals.

Trump Tariffs Tank Asian Equities, Chinese Yuan. China Ready To Negotiate.

President Donald Trump's latest trade war escalation against China appears to have had an immediate effect on Asian markets and the Chinese Yuan, sending both tumbling early on Monday morning.

Play Video
"China's yuan currency fell to 7.1487 to the dollar, its weakest level since early 2008 at the height of the global financial crisis," AFP reported. "On equity markets, Hong Kong led losses, slumping more than three percent, with investors also spooked by fresh violent protests in the city that saw police use water cannon for the first time. Shanghai lost 1.3 percent and Tokyo ended the morning more than two percent off."

Chinese Vice Premier Liu He indicated early on Monday that the communist nation was willing to negotiate with the U.S. to prevent the trade war from escalating.

Reuters reported that "Liu, China's top trade negotiator, was speaking at a tech conference in Chongqing in southwest China" when he made the remarks.

On Friday, the U.S. imposed a new round of sanctions against China after China imposed additional tariffs on the U.S.

I don't get it, why are the Chinese shooting their Golden Goose?

Martial Law Considered in Hong Kong to Crush Pro-Democracy Protests

Authorities in Hong Kong are considering whether to impose draconian martial law powers in a bid to crush pro-democracy protests.

According to a report in the South China Morning Post, Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor is not ruling out invoking the Emergency Regulations Ordinance for the first time in half a century.

The ordinance would grant the government sweeping powers, including authorizing the entry and search of properties, censoring the media and imposing maximum terms of life imprisonment.

Lawmaker Au Nok-hin warned that imposing emergency powers would lead to the "total destruction" of Hong Kong's capitalist system, while law professor Simon Young of the University of Hong Kong said the ordinance meant "basically a state of martial law."

With the government refusing to meet the five demands of the protesters, which includes withdrawing a bill that would allow suspects in Hong Kong to be extradited to China, escalation seems inevitable.

Beijing still has troops massing nearby, but experts agree that they are unlikely to be deployed inside Hong Kong.

As we previously highlighted, riot police deployed water cannons for the first time during violent demonstrations on Sunday, protesters also being hit with tear gas and rubber bullets.

Hongkongers eyeing move to Malaysia amid unrest

Officials caution applicants to My Second Home scheme that a strict vetting process is in place amid concerns that Hongkongers involved in illegal acts could seek refuge abroad
Agents for the programme have reported a rise in interest from the city of 20 to 30 per cent

Hongkongers are "more than welcome" to move to Malaysia through the country's My Second Home programme but must not be "running away from something", officials said on Wednesday amid reports of a spike in interest since the city's anti-government protests took off.
Tourism, arts and culture ministry secretary general Isham Ishak warned that residents of the city must be genuine applicants and pass a stringent vetting process.
"We will do background checks," he told Malaysian state media amid concerns that Hongkongers involved in illegal acts could seek refuge abroad.
The programme aims to attract wealthy foreigners. Lim Kok Sai, president of the Malaysia My Second Home Agents Association, said interest from Hongkongers had shot up by nearly a third "of late".
"We don't have the figures as it takes time to process the applications, and on Hong Kong's side they must apply for a good conduct clearance certificate, but I believe there is about 20 to 30 per cent more interest," Lim said.

Hong Kong leader formally withdraws controversial extradition bill

HONG KONG, Sept 4 (Reuters) - Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam on Wednesday announced the formal withdrawal of a controversial extradition bill that has plunged the Chinese-ruled city into its worst political crisis in decades.

The bill, which would have allowed extraditions to mainland China where courts are controlled by the Communist Party, triggered months of unrest and posed the gravest challenge to Chinese leader Xi Jinping since he came to power in 2012.

She didn't suddenly have a change of heart. I think Trump's mention of the China, Hong Kong debacle sent a solid message to China to back off.
China still thinks they can steal Hong Kong at a later date, but screwing with it right now would end any possibility of a trade agreement.

All China had to do was look at Japan and the USA to see what happens to economies when you send your manufacturing jobs out of the country. The economy only grows at the top and the middle class becomes low wage fast food workers.

Quote"People familiar with the tentative deal expect large purchases of U.S. agriculture goods by Beijing."

Meanwhile, the US merely holds off on the implementation of "tariffs next Tuesday on about $250 billion of Chinese imports to 30% from 25%."

This is a win.

Title: Hong Kong Protests Expand
Post by: Solar on October 26, 2019, 05:36:08 PM
Hong Kong medics join anti-government protests to 'resist tyranny' as movement enters 21st weekend. (medical workers)

HONG KONG – Hundreds of Hong Kong medical workers and other anti-government protesters rallied in the Chinese-ruled city's financial center on Saturday, angry at perceived police brutality during more than four months of sometimes violent unrest.

Pro-democracy activists have attacked police with petrol bombs and rocks and shone lasers in their eyes. One officer was slashed in the neck with a knife.

Police have responded with tear gas, water cannons, rubber bullets and occasional live rounds, wounding several protesters, many of whom received treatment from volunteer first responders at the roadside.

A 26-year-old nurse, who gave his name only as Stephen, said police would often come into the hospital where he works on the Kowloon peninsula and stand outside the wards or search for protesters in the accident and emergency department.

"Sometimes they bring their guns and weapons. The patients may be scared. This is not good practice," he said. "The protesters have injuries. This searching must be done after they are healed."

He said he worked as a first responder at protest sites in his spare time.

"I didn't tell any of my supervisors — only some colleagues with the same values," he said. "But when I see people injured, I have to provide first aid."

Police deny accusations of brutality, saying they have shown utmost restraint in life-threatening situations and issue warnings to protesters with color-coded signs before they respond with tear gas or baton charges.

Protesters are angry about what they see as creeping Chinese interference in Hong Kong, a former British colony that returned to Chinese rule in 1997 under a "one country, two systems" formula intended to guarantee freedoms that are not enjoyed on the mainland.

China denies meddling. It has accused foreign governments, including the United States and Britain, of inciting the unrest.

The demonstrators gathered peacefully for Saturday's "resisting tyranny" protest, occasionally chanting "Hong Kong people, resist."

This weekend demonstrations are planned in the city's financial district on Hong Kong Island and another on Sunday on the Kowloon side of the harbor.

Pro-democracy activists were preparing to demonstrate for the 21st straight weekend as unrest spreads around the globe, from South America to Europe to the Middle East.

Protesters in Hong Kong will look to keep up momentum in the monthslong fight with officials in Beijing for greater democracy. Earlier this week, reports surfaced this week that China's leaders were mulling a plan to replace Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam by early next year in a bid to calm public anger.

All efforts so far by Hong Kong's authorities to quell the protests have largely failed, from banning marches and withdrawing the proposed extradition bill to using an emergency law to outlaw face masks and pledging to make housing more affordable.

The protests have been cited as inspiration for demonstrators around the world who have flooded the streets of major cities this month over economic inequality, regional grievances and alleged corruption.

Title: Trouble in China
Post by: Solar on October 28, 2019, 05:03:44 PM
As well as trouble for Xi.

The four-day conclave comes at a critical time, as Hong Kong grapples with anti-government protests for the fourth month, drawing Western criticism of Beijing for trampling on the rights and liberties of Hong Kong people in its handling of the violent demonstrations.

China's economy is also growing at its slowest pace in nearly three decades, hurt in part by a prolonged trade war with the United States. Stable growth has been fundamental to the party's political legitimacy.

It is key for Beijing to use the occasion to cast the Chinese political system as meritocratic, unchallengeable and superior to Western democracy, said Wang Jiangyu, director of the Asian Law Institute at the National University of Singapore.

Party leaders have repeatedly warned that without Communist rule, China would descend into chaos and fall prey to hostile Western powers. In September, Xi said China was entering a period of "concentrated risks" — economic, political and diplomatic — and the country must be ready to fight.

"China's party-state wants to show that its political system is more attractive overseas, and others should stop their finger-pointing," Wang said.

Landslide democratic win puts pressure on leader of Chinese-ruled Hong Kong
Twinnie Siu and Jessie Pang

(This November 25 story corrects 'quadrupled' to 'tripled' in par 17)

(Reuters) - Hong Kong's leader said on Monday she would listen to public opinion after a landslide election victory by opponents of Chinese rule amid months of sometimes violent pro-democracy unrest.

Democratic candidates secured almost 90% of 452 district council seats in Sunday's poll, held during a rare weekend lull in clashes with police, despite a strongly resourced and mobilised pro-establishment opposition.

Hong Kong's pro-Beijing chief executive, Carrie Lam, said the government respected the results and wished "the peaceful, safe and orderly situation to continue".

"Quite a few are of the view that the results reflect people's dissatisfaction with the current situation and the deep-seated problems in society," Lam said.

The government would "listen to the opinions of members of the public humbly and seriously reflect", her statement said.

The elections brought a record turnout after six months of protests and upset wins for democrats against heavyweight pro-Beijing opponents, greeted in some voting centres by chants of "Liberate Hong Kong" and "Revolution Now".

District councils deal with local issues such as transport, but their members also form part of the election committee for Hong Kong's chief executive. This could give them some influence over the next vote in 2022, although they account for only 117 of its 1,200 members.

Democratic Party chairman Wu Chi-wai described the election as the first step on the way to full democracy. "This district election shows that the central government needs to face the demands of a democratic system," he said.

Along with universal suffrage, the protesters' demands include an independent inquiry into perceived police brutality.

The voting ended with no major disruptions across the city of 7.4 million people.

"This is the power of democracy. This is a democratic tsunami," said Tommy Cheung, a former student protest leader who won a seat in the Yuen Long district close to China's border.

Title: Trump Signs Pro-Hong Kong Legislation
Post by: Solar on November 28, 2019, 05:37:45 AM
President Donald Trump signed legislation into law Wednesday that shows American support for Hong Kong protesters in a move that will likely worsen relations with China.

This comes amid months of public clashes in Hong Kong that began over an extradition bill. The region's government retracted the bill, but the pro-democracy demonstrations have continued in the streets. Republican Florida Sen. Marco Rubio introduced the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act, one of two bills Trump signed Wednesday.

"I signed these bills out of respect for President Xi [Jinping], China, and the people of Hong Kong," Trump said in a statement. "They are being enacted in the hope that Leaders and Representatives of China and Hong Kong will be able to amicably settle their differences leading to long term peace and prosperity for all."

The second bill the president signed bans exporting items such as tear gas and rubber bullets to Hong Kong police. These items are often used for controlling crowds.

And they think they're in a position to retaliate?

China warned the United States on Thursday it would take "firm counter measures" in response to U.S. legislation backing anti-government protesters in Hong Kong, and said attempts to interfere in the Chinese-ruled city were doomed to fail.

U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday signed into law congressional legislation which supported the protesters despite angry objections from Beijing, with which he is seeking a deal to end a damaging trade war.

The legislation requires the State Department to certify, at least annually, that Hong Kong is autonomous enough to justify favourable U.S. trading terms that have helped the territory grow as a world financial center. It also threatens sanctions for human rights violations.

Beijing warned that the United States would shoulder the consequences of China's counter measures if it continued to "act arbitrarily" in regards to Hong Kong, according to a foreign ministry statement.

He has been completely mind-fucking China.  "Let's do it... we're almost there...  just a little more....  I'm optimistic....  Xi is a friend of mine... this is happening...  NOPE! Wait until after the election!".

I think France is less smart, because they _can_ make changes.  China has such an uphill climb, and they can't and won't relax on their communist stronghold, and their entire existence is dependent on a central-planned economy that is too dependent on others for goods.  The smart reformers in China who know this is a dead end are ultimately powerless.

I'm sooo loving this! The entire world thinks Trump wants a deal, the Chinese keep giving ground, but refuse to give up and agree to abide by a binding agreement backed by law with teeth.
Trump keeps stroking Xi, claiming we're close but more work needs to be done, so the Chinese goo back and give up more and just when it looks like they can come to an agreement, Trump backs Hong Kong Freedoms.
Think of this like a banquet and an exquisite desert in on display in the middle of the table. France is that single fly buzzing over the desert.

Here's a wild ass guess, I don't think Trump wants a deal with china. There are several countries who can take the place of china for supplying cheap labor who would be a lot more honest to deal with. Now the business side of Trump probably would not turn down a great deal if it was in our best interest, but the patriot side of Trump probably would piece meal  any deal just to keep china honest.

Here's how I see it. Trump is a Patriot, he despises communism. Like Reagan, he too wants to crush it. So China hasn't a prayer in Hell of getting any deal, sure, there will be some concessions, but Trump said China has been ripping us off for decades and he will bring an end to it. So China has a Hell of a cliff to climb just to meet Trump halfway.
The other side of the coin is a peaceful India, a billion plus people and burgeoning economy just waiting to take off. Say good bye to China, they will be just a blip in history.

QuoteChina is buying more U.S. soybeans, as both countries try to reach an initial agreement on trade.

Between September and November this year, Chinese imports of American soybeans increased 13 times from the same period last year, according to Xiaoping Zhang, Greater China Regional Director for the U.S. Soybean Export Council. That's based on analysis of Chinese and U.S. data.

U.S. soybean exports to China dropped off sharply in the second half of last year after Beijing retaliated to U.S. tariffs with its own duties.

As a result, all Chinese purchases of U.S. soybeans this year occurred through specific arrangements, outside normal trade channels that would otherwise subject the imports to retaliatory tariffs of about 30%, Zhang said in a phone interview Monday.

Killing off the China connection is the shot in the arm small business needed to compete.

China Auto Sales Drop For 17th Straight Month In November

December 10, 2019

By Yilei Sun and Brenda Goh

BEIJING/SHANGHAI (Reuters) – Auto sales in China fell for a 17th consecutive month in November, with the number of new energy vehicles (NEVs) sold contracting for a fifth month in a row, data from its biggest auto industry association showed on Tuesday.

Total auto sales in the world's biggest auto market fell 3.6% from the same month a year earlier, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) said.

That follows a drop of 4% in October and 5.2% in September. Car sales in the country contracted last year for the first time since the 1990s against a backdrop of slowing economic growth and a crippling Sino-U.S. trade war.

QuoteTrump Shuts Down WTO Appeals Court, Sending EU, China Scrambling For 'Plan B'

Axios certainly has the best intro to today's bombshell development: "Internationalists have always dreamed of a court with jurisdiction over all the countries of the world. In 1995, the World Trade Organization was created — allowing the world's countries to press claims against one another for the first time."

But it won't survive the Trump presidency as on Tuesday his administration has effectively brought it to an end, neutering its ability to intervene in trade wars, having blocked all new appointments to its dispute-resolution court.

Starting two years ago the US administration began blocking appointments, and now Trump has run out the clock as the now paralyzed WTO's Appellate Body over that period declined from seven judges to three, and with two more terms expiring Tuesday, only one judge remains, thus without the ability to issue a binding ruling.

QuoteEAST LONGMEADOW, Mass. (Reuters) - The U.S.-China trade war is creating something William Gagnon once thought impossible - a 100% American-made bathroom hand dryer.

Gagnon's family-owned company, Excel Dryer Inc, sells about $40 million worth of dryers a year that mostly go into public bathrooms, including at airports and casinos as well as at Starbucks Corp (SBUX.O) and Walmart Inc (WMT.N) stores across the United States.

The Western Massachusetts company uses parts made in the United States at its 50-employee factory, except for the motors and electronic controllers at their core. They long sought a domestic supplier for those items, but nobody could beat China's low prices. Until now.

One challenge for manufacturers who want to produce Made in USA products is that their supply chains, especially for things like electronics and motors, have migrated overseas in search of cheaper alternatives - something the Trump administration vowed to address with tariffs.

Don't panic, it's only the first phase and be assured, the next phase will be even harder, and the one after that. This is a far bigger win for Trump than China.

A couple of hours ago there were reports that a new trade agreement had been reached between the US and China which was just awaiting President Trump's approval. Now Politico is reporting Trump has signed off:

President Donald Trump has signed off on a mini-trade deal with China, two people familiar with the negotiations said on Thursday, marking another trade victory he can tout as he faces impeachment led by House Democrats.

The tentative agreement, which Trump refers to as "phase one" deal, codifies what was agreed to in principle in October. It will require China to significantly increase its purchases of U.S. agricultural goods, open its financial services sector and enact new intellectual property protections.

In exchange, Trump will cancel a 15 percent tariff that was scheduled for Sunday, people briefed on the matter said. The president is also expected to reduce duty rates already in place on about $250 billion worth of goods, including many consumer items such as footwear, clothing and flat panel TVs.

Help, we need jobs..... In the furniture industry???

https://www.zerohedge.com/personal-finance/booming-us-furniture-industry-has-sparked-desperate-scramble-find-workers

QuoteThe U.S. furniture industry is humming right along, with names like Crate & Barrel and Williams-Sonoma the beneficiaries of expanding manufacturing domestically. The tailwind has been sustained growth since the financial crisis and a trade policy that is encouraging more production in the U.S.

But the one problem the industry has now is a lack of skilled workers, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Furniture manufacturers across the United States are having trouble filling open slots with the job market as tight as it has ever been in the U.S.

Meanwhile, a generation of sewers and upholsterers have simply avoided the industry, leaving it reliant on an aging workforce.

U.S. Exports To China Will Double Under 'Phase One' Deal,

According to National Economic Council Director Larry Kudlow, the 'phase one' trade deal with China is complete. While speaking to reporters at the White House Monday, he said U.S. exports to China will double under the deal. The White House economic adviser also said China will increase imports of all goods and services, and emphasized the positive effects this will have on economic growth in the U.S.

"It covers IP and it covers tech transfers, and it covers financial services and it covers currencies and so forth," he explained. "But one of the things it covers...not just agriculture, but the deal includes a Chinese purchase of America goods and services across the board."

Kudlow pointed out that currency manipulation is a key part of the agreement, and it addresses other major issues like IP theft and foreign access to the Chinese market. Trade Rep. Robert Lighthizer will sign the deal with the Chinese vice premier in Washington in early January.

QuoteThe Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) reported personal income rose $101.7 billion (0.5%) in November, exceeding the forecast range. The gain was primarily driven by better compensation for employees, as well as farm proprietors' income, and personal interest income.

Forecasts ranged from a low of 0.2% to a high of 0.4%. The consensus forecast was 0.3%.

Disposable personal income (DPI) rose $87.7 billion (0.5%) and consumer spending continued to come in stronger than expected. Personal consumption expenditures (PCE) gained $64.9 billion (0.4%).

Forecasts ranged from a low of 0.2% to a high of 0.5%. The consensus forecast for spending was 0.4%.

Real DPI and real PCE rose 0.4% and 0.3%, respectively. The PCE price index increased 0.2%. Excluding food and energy, the PCE price index increased 0.1%.

The $37.8 billion increase in real PCE reflected an increase of $22.6 billion in spending for goods and a $17.1 billion increase in spending for services.

Personal outlays increased overall by $68.6 billion in November.

Personal saving was $1.31 trillion in November and the personal saving rate—personal saving as a percentage of disposable personal income—rose slightly to 7.9%.

Trump pulls a chapter from Reagan when he collapsed the USSR. Remember Starwars?
Now Trump has Space Force and the Chinese panties are knotted.

China attacks the newly formed U.S. Space Force as a 'direct threat to outer space peace and security'
Trump signed a $738billion defense bill on Friday, ushering in his Space Force
Beijing said it was 'deeply concerned' and 'resolutely opposed to' the decision
It added that Washington undermined global strategic balance and stability
China's space project has advanced rapidly since first crewed mission in 2003

Rising space power China today attacked the newly created U.S. Space Force, labeling it a 'direct threat to outer space peace and security'.

Foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang told reporters that China is 'deeply concerned about it and resolutely opposed to it'.

'The relevant U.S. actions are a serious violation of the international consensus on the peaceful use of outer space, undermine global strategic balance and stability, and pose a direct threat to outer space peace and security,' Geng said at a regular briefing.

Screw the Commies! These fucks violated space first, back when the launched a kinetic missile in 2007, to test on their own outdated weather satellite.
They're just pissed because they know we have the tech and fiscal ability to make it happen and they can't.
Reagan did essentially the same thing and Russia couldn't afford to keep up, as neither can China.

Quote(Reuters) - China will step up support for employment to cope with rising pressure on job security due to internal and external challenges, the cabinet said on Tuesday, as the world's second-largest economy slows.

Simultaneous downturns in the services and manufacturing industries pose a major problem for authorities seeking to keep a lid on unemployment and prevent social unrest as economic growth decelerates to near three-decade lows.

"At present, China's employment situation is generally stable, but risks and challenges at home and abroad are increasing and the pressure to stabilise employment is increasing," the State Council said in a statement.

I love that last line.  In other words, hemorrhaging by the patient is normal as long as we can stop the bleeding, then we can see about getting the patient a new set of legs, arms, assorted organs and possibly a brain transplant. Otherwise China's economy is fine, the State Council said in a statement.

China has never in it's life experienced this wide ranging employment issue before, mostly because no one had actual jobs in export, they eked out a living from the earth as dirt poor peasants.
Since Nixon opened China, this is the first time they've experienced what it is like not being able to manipulate the mkt. It doesn't take a genius to see that China is putting the best face possible on a total economic collapse.
Sure China will survive, but it's the little guy who will suffer and go without food because China is a Commie nation and that's what they do, pick winners and losers, only on a life and death stage.

Jiang Xiyun was convicted for moving 754 million yuan ($108 million) worth of Hangfeng shares to his personal account between 2008 and 2013, according to the Yantai Intermediate People's Court. He also took bribes of more than 60 million yuan together with another bank executive, according to the Thursday ruling. A reprieved death sentence may be commuted to a life sentence if the person shows good behavior within the allotted period.

The conclusion of the trial underscores the troubles faced by Shandong-based Hengfeng Bank, which earlier this month became the latest regional lender in need of a rescue. The bank sold new shares for about $14 billion to a group of investors including a unit of China's sovereign wealth fund and a local government-backed asset management firm.

Jiang had ordered others to destroy records for over 600 million yuan of transactions, according to Thursday's ruling.

China's banking regulator said in June that the Shandong government was speeding up the restructuring of Hengfeng, a mid-sized bank that has failed to disclose its financial statements for two straight years. The lender had 1.2 trillion yuan of assets at the end of 2016, according to its most recent annual report.

Trump 'Broke the Chinese Communist Party' with Phase One Trade Deal

President Donald Trump's hardline stance in the U.S. trade war with China has paid off, former White House advisor Steve Bannon told CNBC on Wednesday.
Trump "stood up for the tariffs and he broke the Chinese communist party," said Bannon, ex-Trump chief strategist and longtime China critic. He also used to run far-right Breitbart News.

Top trade representatives from the U.S. and China were set to gather at the White House on Wednesday morning to sign the "phase one" deal.

"It's only phase one, but directionally this thing is powerful," Bannon said.

The initial agreement between the world's two largest economies is expected to touch on tariff relief, China's promise to purchase some $200 billion of U.S. goods over two years, and changes to intellectual property and technology rules. The deal is also expected to lower structural barriers for American companies hoping to do business in China.

"We gave up very little in the end," said Bannon, who appeared on "Squawk Box" with like-minded China hawk and hedge fund manager Kyle Bass.

New details: 15 healthcare workers in Wuhan have tested positive for the new coronavirus and 1 of them is in critical condition. Test results are pending for a 16th healthcare worker.

NEW: The World Health Organization has confirmed a new coronavirus that has infected more than 200 people in China has been transmitted human-to-human.

Officials will convene Wednesday to determine if the outbreak "constitutes a public health emergency of international concern."

OK, lets be honest here, like all viruses transmitted by animals to humans, didn't happen because you breathed the same air. Know what I mean?

China pressured NK to fire former negotiator Ri Yong Ho. Granted I have no proof, but then it is NK, a puppet State of commie China.

Ri Son Gwon appointed North Korean foreign minister, diplomatic note confirms
Long-time military hardliner to now serve as DPRK's top diplomat, foreign embassies in Pyongyang

Minyoung Lee, senior analyst with NK News-sister site NK Pro, said Monday that the decision to pick Ri Son Gwon as foreign minister was notable for his more conservative stance towards the U.S. and South Korea, as well as his military background.

"He is generally known to be a hard-liner with little to no experience in diplomacy," she wrote in an NK Pro analysis on the ongoing reshuffle of North Korea's diplomatic top brass.

With the "closest diplomatic experience Ri has had [being] in inter-Korean relations," Lee said that his "appointment as foreign minister is extremely unusual, as most of his predecessors were career diplomats or had at least some prior experience in diplomacy."

WuFlu?
I'm not sure it's fair to call this a Flu when it develops into a deadly form of pneumonia.

Things are far worse for the CCP than is being let on. They are in the midst of a possible civil war and the economy is on the verge of collapse. China just gave their banking system at least 7 trillion yuan which I think is about 1 trillion dollars.
They can't afford this in anyway, with the economy stagnated, food shortages, and supplies across the board, the govt will have to pay out for everything, no trade going out, only money.
They figured they could hold out for two years under Trump's trade deal, hoping the Dims would win, but those hopes were dashed when reality set in of an inevitable Trump landslide victory this Nov.

I'm not a prognosticator, but I've been following this closely for years now and I think it's safe to say, something is going to give very soon. I just pray the people of China win over the CCP.
