Okay, this may be a dumb question; but are the police even issued pistol permits? I would assume that their shield, and employment by a LEA would be their "permit".

The wife and I always got CCL (permits) that way we could carry out of state also.

I think there's also the question of carrying personal weapons, which is allowed by some cities / towns / depts.

Locally they have started allowing cops to carry privately owned AR-15's in their police cars.  Sounds weird, I know, but this is a fairly conservative place and it's gotten mostly rave reviews.  In general, the populace likes it because they've heard the stories of cops being outgunned in several high profile shootout stories.

lol, this IS a great example of turning the tables on the leftists.  This decision has gotten such great approval that even the local leftists & gun control fools have been afraid to whine about it.

I guess maybe there are some hopeful trends here and there.  The squashing of the unions in Michigan and Wisconsin is great stuff, and here in TN the GOP has obliterated the dems for the time being.  We're even in the process of ramming school vouchers through in a big, splashy way.

And the state DOE thrashed the liberal Nashville council for illegally disapproving a charter school, just because they're a for-profit entity.  Yanked about 3 million in state funding right out of their budget.  Man, you should have heard the leftists squeal.  They screamed about suing, but they knew that they were the only ones who had actually broken the law.

There is some hope. In NC we elected a GOP majority in the House and Senate in 2010 for thr first time in 100 years. In 2012 we elected and GOP governor and he will have some things done that the previous gov had been vetoing.

Keep the fith and keep trying.
