John McCain was not a bad person nor was he a hero of any magnitude.
He was a graduate of Annapolis who flew planes and 3 incidents stand out:

* in 1965 he crashed his Buckeye into Chesapeake Bay, Virginia.
The Naval Board that investigated these, blamed pilot error as the major
cause for each crash. So how did McCain's career survive these???
Because his Grand-Father was a 4-Star Admiral who had been an aide to
Douglas MacArthur, the Pacific Commander in WW 2 and his Father was
a 3-Star Admiral, that's why.
As for Viet-Nam, or any war for that matter, POW's are hardly heroes;
rather they are unfortunate casualties of war; a reality that pre-dates
Julius Caesar.

Let's not forget the USS Forrestal Fire. Oddly enough witnesses stated it was the Stain that started it by pulling a prank and wet starting his engine. The Navy covered it up by claiming a rocket misfired on another jet, yet when you do a deep search, there was never one mention of the pilot that fired it, or as they claim, it was an electrical malfunction caused it to fire, yet still, not one mention of who the pilot was.

I have sailed with the Forrestal, and have met many who served on her including a couple who were aboard during the fire. I have never heard this tale, even with McCain being well-known at the time. I do not believe it, period.
