A young Jr. high school student was in gym class where she was to be weighed and measured.  She politely declined.  Good for her!

You know, gym teachers have been weighing and humiliating kids for generations and our society is fatter than ever.  It's a ridiculous practice.

Fascinating, because during my time in school, there were no fat kids in school.
With the exception of two, a brother known as the Pickens, and no one really cared because they were well liked personalities with a genetic disease beyond their control.
Today, one would think being fat and out of shape was the in thing to do.

Just another example of societal collapse under liberal rule.

Back in my day all a gym teacher did was say get your ass up the rope and ring the bell.

When I was in school there was usually one really big kid in each class.  Today, it is much different.  In a neighboring (US) city a 16 year old kid just dropped over dead from a heart attack right in the middle of the school.  I was reading an article somewhere recently that suggests this is the first generation where parents will typically outlive their kids.  Children are dealing with diabetes Type II (preventable) and high blood pressure.  That shouldn't happen until they are 60, fat, and lazy!

The first obesity trend started in the 50s when processed foods came out.  The next massive jump in obesity was in the 70s when the ADA came out with the high carb/low fat diet.  Science today knows that is exactly wrong, dietary fat is not what gets people fat.  White carbs are the culprit. (flour/sugar)  Even though today we KNOW it is not dietary fat causing heart disease and obesity, the ADA won't admit they had it wrong all these years.  So, people who follow their suggestions will just keep getting fatter than they already are.

Not me!  High school girls are ruthless when it comes to weight.

I remember gym class, everyone hated weigh in day.  If a girl weighed 102# the 98# girl would make fun of her and call her lardo.  If the kid didn't have an eating disorder already, she did when the girls were done with her.

That must be a lib thing.     In my day you worked 2hrs before school and 3hrs after.  Then eat and do you school work that you did not get done in school.  By that time it was bed time.   God kids are spoiled now.

Here we do agree.  Kids are spoiled today.

When I was in school if we would have been caught with a calculator it was a given, that would be an F.  Today, they don't care if you know how to get the answer on your own, they want to know if you can use the calculator.

I know this ages me, but I just found out a few months ago that they are doing away with cursive writing.  ??  How will they read the constitution?  They won't, they will depend on someone else to print it out for them.

You mean "Dates You"? Because calculators had yet to be invented when the majority of this forum was in school..

Right Walks? Getting caught with a slide rule or abacus was an instant F.
But in your case, it was probably crib notes on a stone tablet.

I remember one time in high school I had to shower in gym class in front of everyone.  It was horrific.  I still feel guilty for humiliating those poor kids.

There are plenty of reasons any athletic program, even one as rudimentary as high school PE, should evaluate the physical conditions of participants. These days, beyond the common sense utility and safety benefits of physical evaluation, the obvious concern is legal liability if no such evaluation is undertaken. The first things measured in every such program are height and body weight. Duh.

The girl in the story seems to have an issue -- approaching a phobia -- about the idea of being weighed in general, and being weighed in public especially. I think we should recognize that the problem is hers, not the school's.

A more fundamental question: How and why can this possibly be considered newsworthy?

Seriously, if kids can't write cursive writing how will they read old documents?  SIGN their name?  Can you imagine Bill Gates printing his name on a contract?  They will all look like dumbasses.

It just seems like we should be adding to the curriculum, not taking away from it.  Beyond elementary school (where kids are little and need to burn off a little energy) gym shouldn't even exist.  Kids are huge today anyway, a couple of hours of kicking a ball isn't going to make a difference.  They need to learn to think, read, write, algebra, science...

It's spooky.
