They did away with it in 2009, 8 years later they reinstate it. What happened that the system failed?
I find this an interesting topic, especially after our experiment of conscription failure, or rather the success of a paid for Military.

Sweden brings back military conscription amid Baltic tensions

The decision means that 4,000 men and women will be called up for service from 1 January 2018, a defence ministry spokeswoman told the BBC.
They will be selected from about 13,000 young people born in 1999, who will be asked to undergo a military assessment, Marinette Nyh Radebo said.
Non-aligned Sweden is worried about Russia's Baltic military drills.
In September, a Swedish garrison was restored to Gotland, a big island lying between the Swedish mainland and the three ex-Soviet Baltic states.
Why is this happening?
Ms Nyh Radebo said the return to conscription was prompted by "the security change in our neighbourhood".

"The Russian illegal annexation of Crimea [in 2014], the conflict in Ukraine and the increased military activity in our neighbourhood are some of the reasons," she said.
How will it work?
The 13,000 who undergo the military tests will be a mixture of volunteers and conscripts. "You are part of the conscript system once you've done the tests - men and women are treated equally," Ms Nyh Radebo said.
"The authorities choose the ones who are willing, interested and motivated."

I would think that bringing back the draft has more to do with the Muslim invasion taking place in their country.

I was thinking the same thing. Truth is Sweden doesn't have enough of an army to make a difference in ant theater but their own.

How do you put toothpaste back in the tube? I am not sure any of the European countries have the willpower to do what is necessary to rid themselves of the radical Islamic threat.

Yeah, you can't, you can only wipe up what you wasted and throw it away.
Assuming they have the balls to do the right thing, which I doubt, these little socialists have become complacent over the decades.

Just look at the emerging F-35 program. Britain, Australia, Turkey, the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway and Canada all gave development money,

In the Pacific the Japanese scored what Mitsubishi Heavy Industries says will be an $8 billion Final Assembly and Check Out (FACO) site, as will also happen in Italy and Wales. In the U.S., 8,800 people already work on the F-35 and (after Trump pressured price increases), they now claim they'll have enough money to hire another 1,600 people.

South Korea has also placed orders, rather than try to refurbish existing aircraft...but it was the orders from relatively small nations like the Netherlands (and endangered ones like North Korea) which say your premise above may be flawed. A hundred million bucks PER PLANE is nothing to sneeze at in today's European economy.
