https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vesicovaginal_fistula is a horrific, permanent condition, usually caused by a difficult Childbirth.

The result is HOLES between the Vagina and Bladder. It's horrific and crushes any dream of a normal life.

Doctor Sims thought he had a surgical solution. So he experimented on, and THEN SUCCESSFULLY CURED several Slave Women.

This before the Civil War, and anesthesia was primitive at best. Surgery was not pleasant - but after his successes with Slave Woman, he performed the same surgeries on FREE WHITE WOMEN.

Who PAID him handsomely so as to lead a normal life again.

I expect if I were one of those Slaves he cured, I would be very grateful. And would gladly endure some hours (or even days) of pain for a normal life again.

BTW, Dr Sims DID administer Opium - at least occasionally. He was not some Dr. Mengele.

Anyways, this is 2018, not 1846. And no one gives a SHIT that he saved so many lives.

So bye bye Good Doctor.
