Title: Some forum issues to be aware of...
Post by: taxed on May 13, 2021, 07:37:21 PM
Nothing major, but a few issues you've already noticed that we're working on:

- timezones are jacked up...

- some posts may seem like they're missing, depending on when you look at the thread

If you hit any others, feel free to post them here.

Here's a couple more I've noticed.

Title disappears from posts, so when you're reading a post, you have to scroll to the top to see what thread it is.

The other is thread views, they seem to have disappeared as well.

Maybe this is on MY end..  Froze up 3x this am.  One of those was probably the 1hr timer expiring.
I copied the text window, exited Brave, went back to CPF, was already logged out & logged back in, reposted, it was fine.  It was freezing while writing / hit preview - said it was fetching it ... froze, screen locked, each time.   Checked it on another edit, it was fine.

May want to increase the Drafts autosave time to at least 180 seconds; that may help.

I hit it within 30 seconds. Not the first time it happened. If you like, try resetting it to 5 minutes, maybe it's just a bug, resetting it may wake it up?

Well, it's not you manually saving something, but the autosave function that can generate this type of "non-responsive" behavior.  Sure, I can set it, but I figure Taxed may want to be the one so there won't be too many cooks?  But I can take a look at it.

I set it to 180 but it doesn't seem to have affected it (and 180 should have been plenty).  The other culprit would be Javascript.  Taxed would have to weigh in on that; I don't know if any custom JS has been added. I'll return the Drafts value back to 30, since that's where he had it set.

There was like a 20 minute timer to go back and EDIT a saved post in the old system.
If there's such a thing, see if it can be set a little longer, and a couple of minutes.
I just had one, saved about 9 minutes, forgot or miss inserting correctly the link to the article (pissing off Solar), and couldn't add it to the original.

That feature to "name a link" (rather than see this huge link) is really cool, nice touch!!!

Just did a (copy) then "Remove" from another thread, and reposted it here ... another cool thing, if you catch it quick enough!

There's another forum out there that runs on the same platform
their timer for that is set on infinite.

The main reason, and I learned this at a gold mining forum decades ago. Libs are notorious for changing what they said. "nah ah, you're a liar, I didn't edit my post to say that, I fixed a spelling error". Utter BS!
So the shorter the better, if you can't get it right the first time, just quote yourself and fix it.

I can completely understand - but, don't think that is a real problem here, is it?
Is there an "Edited" line that pops into the text or something that would automatically show it WAS edited?

20-30 minutes, would be nice - just a suggestion, it's your system.  I'll shut up and play with the other new stuff.

Sure it shows edited, but unless you can prove what they changed, they got away with it.
If it's something bugging you, just ask, a Mod will fix it.

I have a time problem.
Yesterday I had my time on CPF set to USA Central Time(UTC -5:00), which is where I live, and all the times on my posts and others posts were showing as correct.
Just now though, I made a post and it was listed as 7 hours behind my time. So in order to get the time correct on the posts, I now have to have my time set to European Central Time(UTC +2:00). Now the time on the posts is correct again to my time here. Except I dont live in Europe...
I mean in the end this will be ok since its showing accurate times now, but I thought you should know that I cant have my time set correctly to do so.

Here is another thing I just noticed. When I make two posts in a row on the same thread, it will only allow me to modify the 2nd one. Once I create the 2nd post, I lose the ability to modify the first. Just FYI.

Same issue here with the forum time and message time stamps: I am in EST, Profile set to UTC time, I see all times off by 3 hours; when I change to EST times are off by 8 hours.  Check with your provider and find out to what time zone the Web Server OS is set? Also, does the time zone not take into account Daylight Savings Time offsets?

Just a suggestion (regarding the timezone).  If this does not appear in the Settings.php file

$db_character_set = 'utf8';
I would add it.  There was a bug that caused the DB to not correctly set UTF8; I don't know if they fixed it or not.  It almost seems to me as if it wasn't dealt with.

Just a thought.  But an overwrite may settle it, anyway.

If you see the smileys when you are posting, there's an icon that looks like a chain link with a tiny green spot.  It is just to the left of the "envelope" (email) icon.  You'd probably see "YouTube", then to the right of that, the "image" icon, then just to the right of that, the "link" icon.

Well, I'm still assuming that Sauce did mean Twitter, but maybe not.

I've not kicked the tires on 2.1RC3 on any of my test sites, so I'll do that this week, but if embedding Twitter posts is not a feature of 2.1, then there is a mod that will accomplish that.  The parsing is dead easy, just two edits.

But that may not be something you guys want.

It would appear that this roll out by SMF was a bit premature, they left out soooo much.

It would appear that this roll out by SMF was a bit premature, they left out soooo much.
They left the heavy lifting to the end user.

Well, 2.1RC3 is a "release candidate" and not recommended for production forums, but a lot of people are forging ahead with it, anyway.  Many of them hope that this will light a fire under SMF to make finalize 2.1 and make it stable.  (Me, included, ha.)

Also, does the time zone not take into account Daylight Savings Time offsets?

Yeah, the timezone functionality is broken.  The updates we're going to apply may fix it.  If not, we can isolate it.

I think you will need a avatar from a place with a https address now.  As before http would work.

I have one and not sure if it's on my end or, not.

Whenever I open a thread and I've been on it before: it opens the the first post.  Like I'm not setting cookies.  :-/

I'm wondering if there's a setting I'm missing to take me to the next post from where I left off. ?

I've tried marking all read: Same results.

Hi, CasND.  One suggestion would be to change from CPF to Forum Default (under Current Theme in your profile's Look And Layout options).  Then log out, clear your browser's cache and log back in.  The first time, after doing this, you may see that same behavior, but test by clicking on a topic, navigating away from page one of the topic to a higher page number, leave the thread and return to it, to see what happens.  If you still have the same issue, then it could be a cookie issue.  If that's the case, you'd want to go to your browser's cookie settings and enter this site as "Always allow", then try again.

@CasND Also, when you click on a particular board, then see the listings of topics, instead of clicking on the title of the topic, look for the orange "New" icon, just to the left of the topic.  This should take you close to where you left off, if there were, in fact, new posts since you were there before.  I probably should have said this first but I was answering your post and working on another site at the same time.

Somehow it became a hidden folder that only admins can see.
I can see it if I go into admin mode, but members and guests don't see anything.

I'm guessing something got tweaked in an unrelated action, I just wanted Taxed to be aware it occurred..

Other systems may have been effected.

We do need a religion forum visible as otherwise those threads will become intertwined with non religion threads.

Yep, that's why it was created. Remember the stink over a handful of posters who got pissed because I stopped them from derailing every damned thread into a religious debate?
I don't remember their names, but they couldn't understand that Religion is not political, that they suckered for the lefts push of divide and conquer by making religion political.

I don't blame them, I blame the GOP for not stopping the left in their tracks.
I blame the GOP for everything. We counted on them to have our nations back, and they sold us out.

They claimed CPF was censoring their posts. All I wanted to do was keep religion free of politics.

There are about 6 boards that went invisible. Taxed and I tried for over an hour to fix it, but nothing is out of order.
Our suspicions point to a bug, so hopefully Grammy knows where to loo.

Well, once you get to "Boards and Posts" you don't click on Permissions.  You click on "Modify".  That's where you'll find the "Allowed Groups".  Some boards are intentionally hidden, for maintenance purposes, etc., so those shouldn't be changed, but most boards are meant to be seen by everyone and in that case, you'd make sure "Everybody" is checked, then save your changes.
