Just think what this gunboat could do using 100% diesel and they talked about Bush.
Going green could kill them when going for speed.   Just my way of thinking.

US Navy Tests Boat Powered by Algae

snip
(Oct. 28) -- The U.S. Navy has developed what it calls a "mean, green riverine machine" -- a 49-foot camouflage gunboat capable of outracing destroyer fleets and powered in part by seaweed.

Swishing around in the vessel's fuel tank is a 50-50 mix of algae-based biofuel and diesel that powers high-performance vessels in a way the military says is indistinguishable from conventional fuels.

snip
The boat did about a mile-long loop, kicking up salt spray as it performed a series of sudden stops, circles and maneuvers. Cullom said Friday's test was the first time any Navy surface vessel powered by biofuel had reached its top speed, 44.5 knots, dubbing it "a mean, green riverine machine."

This PC Bullshit will get our men and women killed!

65 MPH is not all that fast, screw this alternative fuels crap, let them have the most powerful engine available.
There is no reason they can't do 0 to 70 in 3 seconds flat, but we have to appease the socialist movement by destroying the greatest military on the Planet.

All in the name of saving the Planet?
Since when did war ever give a damn about the environment?

Since when did warmakers care about environmentalists?

Using bio-fuel as an adjunct to, rather than a replacement for, traditional fossile fuels does make some sense in the case where our troops may have trouble with adequate supply lines of needed gasoline and/or deisel.  (Remember what happened to the NAZI's in the Battle of the Buldge).

Trying to replace traditional fuels just to make some sort of political statement is reckless, if this is indeed what they are doing.

When we retake the majority control of both houses of Congress, this can be one of the many things our elected public servants may be required to examine very closely (along with all the other stuff our government has been doing without the consent of the governed)

Then go nuclear power!!

Our military (especially our navy) has gone nuclear since the days of Admiral Richover.  As far as I know, the technology doesn't exist to go nuclear with all of our attack vehicles, such as the one pictured in this article.  Besides, could you imagine the amount of nuclear proliferation and nuclear pollution if nuclear material was used to power such vehicles.  The enemy could capture the vehicle for it's nuclear material or just blow it up (like a dirty bomb) to disburse nuclear material at a place of it's choosing.  Not a viable option, I'm afraid!

NOW, space is a much different thing!  Viva Star Wars!   :))

I vote for installing "Mr. Fusion" powerplants in all of these smaller naval vessels!

We need a nuclear reaction to generate the 1.21 gigawatts of electricity we need, Marty!

Yes and could not understand how they call that geen.  Now this is something you can just go and get everyday.  And thy "ordered more than 150,000 gallons"  and being green it is only good for about 60 day before it starts going bad, could be even less as it is 50/50.

They can see. They don't care. They want what they want, they want it now and they don't want excuses.

Let's keep in mind that the military's not exempt from political considerations either. After all, how many military bases are really necessary for military reasons and how many exist primarily to pump money into the local economy? So now they're going for a pat on the head from the greenie-weenies.

Not admirable but not all that different from putting a Navy base a thousand miles from the sea in the district of the chairman of committee that controls appropriations.

Naval Air Station Fallon, NV ring any bells? And of course the CIA Skunk Works out at Groom Lake. Area 51 stuff. I served at two inland NAS (Sanford FL and Albany GA). Those are long distances to fly before seeing open water.

The Navy routinely distills fresh water from sea water.  Is it a leap of fantasy (Jules Verne, H.G.Wells) for us to overcome the technical difficulties associated with converting our Navy to run on sea water?  (actually hydrogen, extracted via electrolisys, from water)..
