So does the left really understand what will happen?

If they make gun ownership difficult or even eventually try to ban ownership of firearms?

Here is my prediction,  I predict that if you make gun ownership more difficult, it will send some companies out of business (not Colt or or your bigger brands, though they will be hit too) those people will have 3 options a) government dole, b) black market c) new career.  I am thinking a fair number of them will choose to make guns on the black market, and lets face it, just like prohibition, buyers will be everywhere.  By doing what makes the left "feel good" they will actually be creating a "worse" situation.  Guns that are unknown, unregistered, untraceable will flood the market.  Capitalism will find a way, if a man has a trade, and the trade is in-demand, he may go into hiding, but I suspect a percentage of them would continue in that trade.

Am I off-base in thinking this way?

I read that Charles Manson has repeatedly gotten in trouble for getting a cell phone and using it to talk to people outside of prison.  If our govt cannot prevent someone as notorious as Manson from getting his hands on a cell phone in prison what chance is there that they can stop guns.  Hell they cant stop drugs either.

Well I was just about to mention drugs. Why does this philosophy not apply to drugs with many conservatives ?

But it does, it should never have been a Federal issue, it should always be a State issue.
If a state wants to legalize say, drugs for example, let them suffer the consequences that entails.

Yes. Once the left is able to delegitimize legal gun ownership, it will create a massive underground market. People with the necessary machinist skills will start cranking out illegal guns. It's not worth it now, because there is no real profit motive. Guns are fairly inexpensive. People will make guns, just like people started stills during prohibition.............and just like we saw poison booze cropping up during prohibition, we will see very dangerous guns being sold. No safeties, sloppy tolerances on the specifications, etc.

Of course, if you accept the fact that the left is only interested in totol control; it's no wonder that common sense is lacking in every one of their policies.

As long as the States actually accept all of the consequences without the monetary help of other states.

I mostly agree with solar that the states can enact laws that would not be acceptable if the Fed govt enacted them. I think you might get a whole lot of Ar-47's floating around and they are cheap and a pretty good gun too. If it was only possible to get a gun through a black market, guns would flood the country from all over.  You can grow weed in the US but not at the levels to meed demand.  So lots of weed come from outside this country.  If guns become illegal in this country well those who continue to be law abiding citizens will certainly be screwed.
