Senate Votes to Let ISPs Sell Your Data Without Consent.

snip~
The Senate took the first step Thursday toward blocking rules that would restrict how some big tech companies share and sell your personal data, a prospect that digital activists said would be a huge loss for online privacy.

On a party-line vote of 50-48, the Senate passed a joint resolution that would bar the Federal Communications Commission from enforcing rules it approved last year — when it was under Democratic control — that sought to ban internet service providers like cable and cellphone companies from selling your data without your consent.

Adult-level. Meaningful. In-depth.

Not.

Wow.  In looking at the list, Mike Lee sold us out as well.  Rand Paul stood with the people on this one.

There is only one answer. $$$$$$$$$

Well, I have continued to donate to Cruz and since this vote, my wallet just closed.  He won't get another dime from me.  Last I heard Castro was going to announce his run out in TX for 2018.  Ted I'm afraid may be in for a battle and a rude awakening. Sad.  Very sad.

Did anyone bother to even read the Bill beyond an NBC BS Headline?

I think correlating the vote and the dollars spins this ... you have to consider the magnitude and what these guys have at stake. Don't you just feel that there must be more to the story even without digging deeper? The dollars to the individuals listed aren't enough to change their lives - to sell out.

It's more likely that this action is more about getting the feds out of the middle of regulating the market and picking winners and losers. It's more about open competition than invasion of privacy. Your privacy is already being invaded - this action just lets others, i.e., ISPs, compete in this large market.

QuoteDon't companies such as Google and Facebook already use my data for advertising? They do. But much of the debate is over whether Internet providers should enjoy the same privileges. Just because online companies take advantage of your data, consumer groups say, doesn't mean Americans should have to submit to Internet providers (or any other industry) that wants to do the same. And although consumers can generally switch from one search engine or online video service to another, they add, switching Internet providers is much harder — especially when many Americans have only one or two choices of broadband company.

The article identifies that it's a $83B market that Google and Facebook already are accessing. Don't they have all the money in the US yet?

Anyway, I do wish Cruz would make a statement on why he voted with this. It would allay some fears that he's turning away from his conservative position.

Ya know - I don't share your position that this vote calls for the reaction you're having. I hope you'll consider further as I think Cruz is a good guy. I don't know if you have any way to ask him to explain, but it would be good if someone could get a word from him on this vote. The silence is very odd - you'd think he'd know it matters to his constituents.

But I've been trying to figure out why I keep hanging in on this site. It occupies a lot of time that, frankly, I have trouble finding. Besides the amazing humor (oh brother), there are some on this site that still regard the facts to influence their thinking rather than being galvanized to a position despite the facts. That seems so rare these days and it's awesome. Humility is a critical virtue though ... we all could use a little work in that area.

I meet so many like Blake who take an emotional position and refuse to look at any other side of it when they discuss it. Oh, I see it in some conservatives on this site too. But it's refreshing to learn and understand with a group that has a solid base (our Constitutional foundarion) and are open to debating what works best for our nation despite the consequences and are willing to defend what's right without deferring to every snowflakes PC notion that has emerged in the last 8 years.

Thanks for keeping me honest ... thanks for allowing me to participate.

As I stated earlier, no one read beyond an NBC bogus headline. First, they repeal the law, then they'll write a new one, but it was imperative this one be shit canned, it was, after all, Dim Legislation.

Oh - ease up. It's hard not to react when so many snippets are tied together and presented as facts. It's no wonder most people just recite what the MSM sets as topic and dialogue. Even some on this site fall for it sometimes. It just further illustrates that the MSM has too much unregulated power - all mass media for that matter. They should not be protected under the First Amendment as a group - need another amendment of some sort ... but, sadly, I don't have a strong suggestion what it would look like ... yet.

On this ISP repeal ... it seems as you indicated. They should do it again and again ... not sure why they didn't start out with a repeal of Health Care.

I understand your point...and certainly the criticism has been out there towards Cruz and there were several interviews done on this that I listened to ...and yes I understand your quick judgement to criticize me.  Two things ... normally I research further and usually try to find the bill number to read the text.  I admit, I didn't.  Secondly, Cruz was highly criticized on this one ... yet he was unusually quiet on this.  Normally he comes out with a valid explanation ... he didn't.

Wrong!! These emotional reactions are exactly what NBC was shooting for when they created the headline.

I wasn't trying to be critical of you - your habits of research are better than mine and I'd like to understand what sources you use / trust most. I haven't read the bill yet either (embarrassing) but I'm not sure how to find it (yet). Your thoroughness is part of why I highly value your opinion. We all fall for the MSM once in awhile - but Cruz's silence on this topic is disconcerting - I hope someone asks him to make a statement on it.
