They have a lifetime position so really why would they care if their decision is unpopular or not?

I can only guess,....to avoid widespread violence/rioting? Everyone knows that one of the hallmarks of the Left is that they're 'peaceful' at heart. sarc

Could be they think they are building their legacy. Doing what every expects you to do does not get your name mentioned in the lsm, doing the unexpected does. Don't know, maybe the lsm makes them feel as if they accomplished something when they pull a stupid decision.

I can't help but think that some members of the SCOTUS are actually 'afraid' to go against the Left, as if they're in some kind of popularity contest.

After Scalia's untimely death---despite lack of evident health issues---can you blame them for playing safe? The abortion ruling was coming up and (I believe) Scalia had to go, the left wouldn't tolerate anything else after failing to oust Clarence Thomas or undermine us with Roberts (the true turd in the punchbowl).

Some have speculated that members of the SCOTUS are afraid of the left
because of what the NSA might have discovered about them
via its universal surveillance.
