Title: Ron Paul asking UN to seize ronpaul.com
Post by: taxed on February 11, 2013, 10:38:15 AM
Is he serious?  The owner of ronpaul.com is selling the domain for $250k, but Ron thinks it's to high, and feels he is entitled to the domain, so he filed a 13 page complaint to the UN.  The owners offered him ronpaul.org for free, but we wants it all.

His fans are pissed!

Its strange how mankind always seem to need leaders, and organize around a single individual. This could be a lesson for libertarians.

Simply strange. If Paul didn't buy it, who else would pay that much for a website for one guy?
It's not as if it appeals to the porn industry, car companies, even Pubs have no use for it.
He should have kept his mouth shut and wait for the price to plummet, and it's obvious no one wants it.

What's even stranger is he could put a message out asking for folks to contribute so he can buy it and would raise that in no time.  I'd try to haggle it down to as low as I can, and then ask for help from my sheeple.

Good point...
I wonder if the damage is irreparable though, he's not coming off as the good guy, the guy they placed on a pedestal.

It is.  We'll see if he has the courage to address this.

They gave the guy Saint hood, now their feelings are hurt. In a way I understand, but he didn't ask for worshipers, he wanted constituents.
It's like kicking groupies out of your bathroom, they just don't get it.

QuoteBack in 2007 we put our lives on hold for you, Ron, and we invested close to 10,000 hours of tears, sweat and hard work into this site at great personal sacrifice.
Wahhhh!!!!
QuoteWe helped raise millions of dollars for you, we spread your message of liberty as far and wide as we possibly could,
Hello!!!! That's why it's called a campaign...
Quoteand we went out of our way to defend you against the unjustified attacks by your opponents.
Wrong!!! You were the ones he needed defending against, you freakin nuts!
QuoteNow that your campaigns are over and you no longer need us, you want to take it all away – and send us off to a UN tribunal?
And to think, a simple restraining order would have sufficed nicely...
You and RP all deserve each other.

As our beloved Miss Jasmine use to say, Taxed. "Bite me!"

Why ever should anyone have to pay for their name?

Because he doesn't own it?

There are provisions to shut down or take over in cases of cybersquatting, the term best applied here. I share one poster's amusement Paul uses the UN to attempt it.

From what I understand, there is only one procedure.

If they copyrighted the name, there isn't much he can do about it.
Granted, it's kind of scummy what they are doing, it seems to slap in the face of their original intent.

He doesn't own the website / domain.  He can't run around claiming to own everything that his name may show up on.  Does he own all rights to a book or magazine if it has his name on the cover  ?

Classic "do as I say, not as I do" and "I have this great idea for all of you, that won't apply to me if I don't want it to".

A libertarian who wants the state to squash only his adversaries.  This is probably why he's had so many problems with racist newsletters and such.  Looks like he's not all that self-aware or true to his public persona.

His son seems a lot more pure and true to the beliefs.  Ron seems a bit more of an idealogue who loves the persecution complex, and his status as odd duck, more than real libertarianism.  More like a Kucinich or Bernie Sanders.

Many people would have thunk it.  It is perfectly legal to have the same name as another person.  I'm sorry to be the one to tell you that, but there's another person running around with your name.

Interesting, so the owners of the site never gave any money to Paul's candidacy?
Ohhhh this will not go over well with the Ronetts in the least. If what is said is accurate, it merely bolsters Paul' case, considering they were using the site for personal gain in selling RP trinkets and not sharing a dime towards the cause.
He has a strong case after all, that is, if ICANN is interested in looking like they carry any credibility.

This is interesting.....  Does it matter that Ron Paul is a public official?

Honestly I don't think it's been challenged in court yet, so there isn't much precedent to go on.
Paul has a good argument, but if they copyrighted the site/name, he's SOL.
The court could decide they not be allowed to associate with him in any manner, completely making the site worthless, but then Paul would also be restricted for the same reason.

Personally I think it's a bunch of crap, he should just buy a site and name it the RealRonPaul.com and these guys would be stuck with a worthless site, his followers would know how to find him.

That's true...  He could tell everyone that site sucks and not to buy from them.  He could ruin them with competition....  what a concept.

Which is what he should have done in the first place, completely disassociate from them and try the Capitalist approach.

Especially someone like him.  If I were ronpaul.com, and understood most of my traffic/business is from an audience deeply devoted to the guy I'm pissing off, I'd re-think my approach.
