Title: Republicans Need to Stop Being the Stupid Party
Post by: Capt.Obvious on January 24, 2013, 06:41:54 PM
But you don't have to take my word for it.

http://www.sfgate.com/news/article/Jindal-GOP-must-stop-being-stupid-party-4220611.php (http://www.sfgate.com/news/article/Jindal-GOP-must-stop-being-stupid-party-4220611.php)

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal called on the Republican Party to "stop being the stupid party" on Thursday as GOP leaders promised fundamental changes to help stave off future losses.

In the keynote address at the Republican National Committee's winter meeting, Jindal said the GOP doesn't need to change its values but "might need to change just about everything else we are doing."

"We've got to stop being the stupid party. It's time for a new Republican Party that talks like adults," he said. "We had a number of Republicans damage the brand this year with offensive and bizarre comments. I'm here to say we've had enough of that."

Good luck with all that.

Stop being the stupid party, in relative terms they are anything but, misguided maybe.
That said the brand is far too damaged to be usable again. all things have an end and the sooner we start building the better, no rebuild, all new, new name, original constitution as it was understood when written.

Do you REALLY think the GOP is any "stupider" than the Demonrats?  The media refuses to focus on all the STUPID things the Demons say "WHAT THE HELL DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE?!" Do away with the MSM and the country won't hear the soundbites.  "We" have nothing to compare with the Demonrat supporters--Occupy, Code Pink, Homosexual Rights Radicals, Black Panthers etc...

Not really.  I have control (in some form or another) of the ventures I have equity in.  If they do what I know they will do, then I make money.  If things start to go sideways, I'm collateralized by company assets, or sell out, etc (depending on the type of deal).  I'm pretty protected going in (but yes, nothing is a certainty).

You can tell a lot by the difference between being a "Phillip" and being a "Phil".  Phil you can have a beer and a laugh with....Phillip not so much.

But back on topic, the market remains a decent option for a minimum 20 year experience (better 30-40 with a consistent monthly installment), you'll get a fairly steady rise over decades.  You just have to suck it up and ignore the downs, knowing that it will come back in 5-10 years to where it was, and rise some too.  I've lived through the dotcom fiasco, and the 2008 debacle.  Lost about 30-40% each time.

Less than 20 years, it's gambling on one or two presidencies, which can be good or bad.

I've been doing it since 1983, and I've got almost +200% back on my money.  That's down to about 5-6% per year.  Not great, but it adds up.  If you consistently put 50-100 bucks in per month, for 30 years, you'll be OK.  Plus you always grab the maximum matching $ from the employer, that's big.

There are very unusual genius types who have weird insights, to the dynamics of the market and individual companies, and they can actually pile up the money regularly.  And that person is not us, so you have to rely on slow, steady methods.

The other huge tactic is to know when to pull your grubstake out of the market.  You don't want it in there much after 60 years old.  If you take a big lick like the dotcom or 2008, you probably won't get it back while you're alive.

You may not want to go full gold-silver, but if you just put it into some pure savings vehicle, it's there for drawdown until you're gone.  Just don't park it with some crook or flimsy, weak bank.  That's the last thing to avoid, lol.

Any type of investment is a gamble unless there is a 100% probability of a positive ROI. Sorry to say, Taxey but you are gambling.

You said it wasn't gambling. You were wrong as usual.
And lottery, along the same lines as the stock Mkt in bad times, but business investments can, and if you know what you're doing, are not a gamble.

Do you see the difference? Take investing in energy long term, and I mean real energy, not that toy shit "Green"energy, but rather Shell oil, Exon, long term safe returns.

Like I said, any investment without a 100% probability of a positive ROI is a gamble, regardless of the extent. Even municipal bonds where a return is supposed to be guaranteed.

But you fail to understand the degrees of what is considered a gamble.
Stock mkt, a gamble, money mkt account, not, lottery, gamble, successful business expansion, not so much.

Now do you see the difference?

Solar I dont much think of the stock market as a gamble, I think of it more of a "choose wisely" kinda thing. I've thought about investing and I find it safe personally to go with the big guys who are in the hundreds in money value such as Amazon and Google. But it can be a gamble if you go with a stock that is below $70. It could either mean the stock has just started or it has continuously plummeted each time the stock closes. I advise people to go with stocks that are $100+ just so they have some cushion to ride on and its not as much of a risk.

In a political sense Obamas using our 2nd amendment and economy power as dice to roll into the checkered roulette so our "leaders" taking a gamble.

At my age, neither of those would show a reasonable return, which is why I no longer mess with it.
I have a money mkt account that brings in several grand a year, more than enough to live off the interest alone.
No gamble, and plenty of return.

And, as I already pointed out, investments are also a form of gambling. You can invest into a business, there is no guarantee of making money. You can invest in real estate, there is no guarantee of making money [As you so eloquently already admitted]. Hate to be the bearer of bad news but you are also engaging in a form of gambling.  :ttoung:

No, because you are flat ass wrong, there are varying degrees of chance.
Using your logic, walking out the door is a gamble on life, in a sense maybe, but staying home is as well.
Now putting on a razor blade suit and running in traffic may be a bigger gamble, but not many see the return on it, so no one does it.

Your claims are those of a child taking their first logic class, please, try and keep up, will ya.

The stock mkt is a fixed game, with huge winners at the top and chicken scratchings for the peons by comparison, at the bottom.
There is insider trading, even the Dims get caught on occasion, look at Reid and Pelosi' portfolio.
Reid is a multi millionaire, on a fixed income because he pulls the strings on huge deals.
If you think for one second that the stock mkt is safer than investing in an established business, I have Nevada seashore property you would be interested in, millions of acres of beach, and not a soul within miles.

This gives me hope I might have chances of becoming one and finally getting a Bugatti. My Uncle who lives in Florida for work right now (but has a house in kentucky) he has invested quite intelligently and he has over a million saved up in the bank. Unfortunately I wont be seeing any of that money when he passes :(
But if that numbers true, its not hard to become a millionaire.

I was going to say Solar, maybe you oughta look in your phone book and look for a last name "Romney" and the first "Williard" in your neighborhood.

Let's just say I live a very comfortable life without bills.
I don't know, maybe if I liquidated everything I own, but it's all from years of careful planning, from building my home and having no help, just me, keeping costs to a minimum, going totally solar, so no electric bill, though I do buy 500 gallons of propane every couple of years.
I prefer the simpler life in the wilderness.

Anyone can do it, it's called sacrifice, and I really mean sacrifice. If you'd met me on the street, you'd probably have put a dollar in my hand and said "you poor man".

I believe Bill Gates at one point was one of those people who saved up pennies. I plan on becoming a musician so that should help somewhat break me into the millionaire banquet. Except I wouldnt be one of those millionaires who you see dressed up in suits, just in attire from American Eagle driving Mercedes Benz SLKs and Lamborgini Gallerdos. But while its fun imagining this it is frustrating with thought if still living with your parents in a  tight condo when you could be in a big mansion, playing Wii on a 60 inch LCD tv.

I would like my place to be gated though.

LOL I have about 600 pounds in change right now.  About time I take it into the bank.  I just don't like change in my pocket so I dump it out when I get home.

Most around me drive a Dodge ram 2500 or 3500.  The smallest place you can get is 10 acres unless you are family.  Why would you live in town, when you could have an apartment or condo in town for when you need to be in town.  Think out of the box young man.

When I have that much money I'd like to live in a private estate. Where people dont just walk up into your property or try taking possessions away. I have actually thought this through in the past. It's a goal of mine.

Personally I prefer the city life to a rural, country life. I like the buzz that comes out of the nightlife and all the young blood that walks the streets. I could get a penthouse but then it would just be like a luxurious apartment, no privacy. No way to have midnight rehearsals with your band or let your precious puppies explore.

Of course I'd work hard. The music industry is filled with people who get fame off tv or because of their looks. True fame comes from starting at playing at the clubs, entering artist expos that have talent agents swarming  If the country keeps going down the BS route I might move to Germany or Austrailia, unfortunately where its cramped.

I used to feel the same way as you, but one day you just change your outlook on things.
Nearly 30 years ago I had my fill, bought a motor home and was headed to Alaska, but still needed a bit more time to settle things before I left for the trip, so one night, parked on the foothills above Sacramento, I was looking at this ranch below, I decided to drive down and ask if it would be OK to park on his spread somewhere.

I drove down, this big woman walks out and yells watch ya want, I explained my situation, she said hang on.
She got her husband, he came up, tilted his cowboy hat, never looked up, said, ya ever ran cattle?
I said nope, ya ever milked a cow, nope again.... ya a fast learner, I said you betchya!

He said pay is $1200 a month, park your ride over yonder and come on in for dinner.
Now that's what I call hospitality. I worked for a couple of years with them as a cowboy. After being on a 10.000 acre ranch, there was no way I was going back to the city, so I bought 10 acres of land up in the Sierra Nevada range, raw as Hell ,and parked my motor home and the rest is history.

If I might give you some advice, find a nice chunk of land, sit on it a few years, if you decide to sell it, you made a good investment, if you decide to stay on it, you won't regret making the investment when you were young.
Besides, it gives you a place to take chicks for a cheap weekend date.

Its success stories like these that America was once (and could still) built off of.

It was always my dream to find raw land and prove to myself I could do it like the early pioneers, even discovered gold just like James Marshall when I was cleaning out my reservoir, but that's a whole nother adventure.

Nothing like challenging yourself, whether it's hiking in the wilderness for a month, or scaling a mountain, it's great to test you limits.

I couldn't build my house the way I did 25 years ago, today they want permits and they only give you so much time to complete it, making it impossible for a man to do it on his own.
There should be a law against interfering with a mans dreams.
Oh wait, there is, it's in our Founding documents. As if that was ever an impedance to Govt.

Also known as living below your means, common sense, and responsibility. The opposite would be living above your means, racking up debt, and being irresponsible. Or, if you live in Washington D.C., governing.

Now you are talking my language!
I lived in the fast paced life of the NE, business owner (75 hrs. per week avg), build my own home, had a family with HUGE parties 3-4 times per yr. Had plenty of money in the ole safe.
I HATED IT!!!!!!!!!!!!
Had Massive MI, wife took money, left me with kids of 4 and 9. Best thing that ever happened. Lost 100 lbs. sold everything I had and bought 4 acres(I know not a lot) in the Mountains of WNC. with a small stream, woodstove, hunt for food, grow my veggies and trade off with a few others, raise my own chickens for eggs, turkeys for the holidays, guineas to keep bugs down and goat now and then. Once my youngest is done with school and moves out I will no longer even need electric.
If not for my daughter at home(still in HS)I could live on $200.00 a month including property taxes and truck ins.
It'a a wonderful life!

Govt doesnt know mans dreams, they only know power and destruction of opportunity.

Nailed it!
So true, it's how my generation was raised, but most didn't heed the warning of their elders that went through the depression, now many tried to live the "keep up with the Jone's lifestyle" and either lost everything, or are about to.
Many of my neighbors thought I was nuts building my own home stick by stick.
Aren't they feeling pretty stupid now now that the bank owns their house.

Been there done that, ex loved the partying, spending money and pretending to be like her (so called) friends.
Turned out, none of them were wealthy, they just had a lot of credit.
Now none of them have anything, including my EX.

Oh, and if you decide to cut the cord for power, go solar, you know, what it was designed for in the first place, as a stand alone power system, not like the libs think, where it can miraculously power the world.

I work for people that spend their lives chasing money and keeping up with the Jones'. They are not happy people.

I'll admit, they have lots of nice stuff though.

Looked into wind a while back but it would never pay back, not even close.
Haven't looked into solar yet, other then the water htr., 2-3 lights and our computers we are set. My electric bills now are usually only 55-70 depending. I just want to be off the grid is all. Forgot about the refrig and freezer, oop!

When I was in school, I had to take out a small student loan to cover some of my expenses. After tuition, books, etc. I had roughly $1,000 left, which went into a CD along with a few savings I didn't need at the time. I paid off my student loan in full within the week of its maturing.

Sadly, the concept of saving for a rainy day seems to be rare these days...

I agree, too many got those credit card offers in the mail and couldn't resist, now they are paying for it, just like we as a Nation, will very soon.
I hope to Hell I'm dead when the bill comes due.

If not dead, move to another country like I have planned.

Too old to start over. Hell, I'd bail on Ca in a heart beat if I were your age, but it's just to much work starting over, besides, I have a little piece of paradise here in the mountains and private.

CA? You mean California? Because I've wanted to move to Los Angeles but that might not happen. My chances to moving to Berlin might be higher.

Yep, one in the same, and you really don't want to move here.
You'll be lucky to get a job waiting tables. Europe is no better, if you need good quick honest money, the gas boom in ND is dying for young hard working men, put in 5 years and you could easily achieve your dreams.

I make it three for getting out of the "keeping up with the Jones" lifestyle. Like The Stranger I also relocated to WNC and find life most satisfying. Bought a home way below what I could afford and love every moment of this lifestyle. Serenity is a wonderful state of being.

My property isn't the end of the world, but you can see it from here.  Eleven acres, with riverbottom.  Quiet.  Ten years ago, if anyone had told me I'd be fixing my grandfathers home, built in 1893, I would have laughed.  City girl, to the core.  Something happened when I had my first kid.  Suddenly, it couldn't be safe enough for her, it wasn't quiet enough.  I started, slowly to crave the freedom I had as a child.
I couldn't just play with friends whenever I wanted, but I could go out whenever I wanted, and my parents didn't worry.  I have that now, and I am so much happier.
