Damn, one more fire in Butte County breaks out in brush and yes, it's very suspicious.
It's screaming along and growing rapidly, it only started a few hours ago and is already visible from satellite.

I was looking at Doppler radar earlier and thought I saw thunder shower activity to the north, but then realized it was all fire, and hot.
Right now we're getting high winds out of the south, but it could shift to a northern wind later which would mean a lot of home will be in danger.

Check it out on Doppler.

This is really bad. The pic doesn't even come close to capturing just how big it is now. Watch the video.

There has been significant structure loss within Paradise, Carhart said. He could not confirm social media reports about the fire destroying Feather River Hospital, K-Mart or Paradise High School.

Video.

Ok I know the area you and ST live around.  How far is the fire as the crow flies from you and ST?  This don't sound good for a lot of people.

We're up country about 70 miles South East. I know we're in no danger because this fire is moving West and in the foothills and we're in the mountains a couple of thousand feet higher, closer to Tahoe..
I feel for these people, you don't have time to do anything but evacuate. This is my biggest fear living in the forest, it could all be gone in a flash.
If that were to happen, we'd definitely move to Idaho.

The smoke reached us this afternoon, and man, it is black, as if it was right here, it must be truly bad to create that much smoke, lots of fuel.

So sad. Hopefully, you will get a break in the weather.

At least the wind died down, that's what fed this monster in the first place, and yeah, rain is literally, right around the corner.
This happens every year, people just don't clear dead trees and brush for a defensible space, the Governor refuses to allocate funds that prevent these preventable issues, then claims victory when he gets Fed funds at the cost of many lives, not to mention the thousands of people that lost everything.

God knows I hate libs, and I really hate what they've done to my beautiful State.

Last count it's believed 29 are considered dead, but more than 200 are missing and presumed dead as well.
To get an idea of the devastation of this horrible event, this guy abandoned his vehicle and followed a Fox into a creek he said was hotter than the hottest hot tub.
Fascinating read and a video attached shows just how fast the fire blew through, and I surmise, based on the fact that most of the trees still have their needles, that most of what burned was manzanita and chaparral, something that should have been cleared by the State, but Moonbeam spent the money on illegals instead.

This is my biggest fear living up here, nature does as it pleases.

PARADISE, Butte County — Greg Woodcox pleaded with his friends to leave everything behind and flee. The firestorm that would become known as the Camp Fire was bearing down on their rural home. They had only seconds to get out.

Despite Woodcox's efforts to save the small group, a fast-moving wall of flames overtook their vehicles as they bunched up behind him at the end of Edgewood Lane on Thursday morning.

Had they gotten out mere seconds sooner, they might have made it out, too, he said.

"I'm in shock," Woodcox, 58, said in a tearful interview Sunday. "Those poor souls. I tried to get them out, but we were trapped like rats."

One other point, for those not familiar with the terrain, Paradise is known as a rural retirement area, so more than half the community, as I remember it was above the age of 60.
It is a really pretty area, but prone to fires due to the brush in the area that provides a sense of privacy, so a lot of people liked to keep a buffer surrounding their properties, but when you have wind like we just experienced, there is no escape, even if the wind isn't blowing, a fire can combust anything into flame 300' away just from the heat alone.

To give you a better idea on just how bad 30 MPH stead winds can be on a fire like this, you can expect to see fires starting a mile ahead of the originating burn.
I had heard that they were concerned that the fire was about to jump Lake Oroville, the same lake that had damn failure during our wet year.
Word was that the fire threatened to jump the lake at Berry Creek, but there seems to be a news blackout on this, because people are claiming it did but the news isn't reporting it, and I can only imagine it's political for one and they don't want to panic Oroville residents.
The winds are to continue through today, as noted on the map. I live about 30 miles to the South as the crow flies.

To give you an idea of the area  burning, here are two Zillow listings, one in the foothills, the other in the mountains.

Note the trees bending in the wind.

Some of you could see our smoke as far away as the East coast.

Given the current configuration of the upper level winds over the United States, theoretically this is not impossible. However, the smoke has a long way to travel, and it is also passing through a storm system in the Midwest.

I kept this thread running in another forum, but I had Walks move it because I don't know if anyone knew it even existed and wanted to point out, the real problem in all of this, is the environmental movement in the State and Fed.
Moonbeam deflects and blames AGW, knowing he's tied the hands of the State where the forest is effected, as is USFS, (US Forest Service) BLM (Bureau Land Management), including private land owners.
Point being, to legally remove dead trees requires a permit from the State, depending on locale, so what happened? The land has an accumulation of decades of seasonal brush grow and die. Oh, and most of us told the State to fuck off, we're clearing our land.
All of this started under Clinton and the Spotted Owl Bullshit and only got worse. Anyway, the left has the audacity to attack Trump for calling out the real issue, poor forest management and Moonbeam wears the biggest target.
Yes, the left blames global warming and insulting the families that lost loved ones, guaranteeing this will happen again.
I have actually read articles claiming the fire was exacerbated by AGW, the people pushing this agenda are callous bastards because they know they're lying, and here's why I know.

Being a Native of Norcal for more than six decades, living in the forest about 40 miles South of Paradise, sharing essentially the same topography for more than 30 years, I can relate to the headache of trying to protect my land from wildfire.
I live a stones throw from the El Dorado National Forest and believe me, as much as I've done to protect my property, could all have been for nothing, because the fed has its hands tied as well where clearing out dead trees and brush, which the environmentalists consider habitat, makes it near impossible to clear out.

Oh, and that missing 600 people nowhere reality, this number comes from anyone not being able to find friends and family, many of which are probably staying with friends out of town.

I saw this on the news this morning wondering where they got this information from. While these wildfires are bad, the worst in CA history, the media always makes it out to be a lot worse then it is with numbers like these.

Yeah, they're making it sound like they're all pretty much dead. It's what they do, including FOX.
It's horrible, no doubt, 12 thousand structures gone, an entire town wiped out in virtually a day.
The lawsuits are going to expose the real cause of this fire and exactly what caused its dramatic spread. Thing is, we all know the real problem, environmental restrictions is what allowed this fire to explode as it did.

Ya know what's really sad in all this? Rain, heavy rain coming next week, so most won't be able to rebuild till spring.

It's horribly sad. Giving your from California I would ask though if the state is to take any blame. I had a discussion today with a co-worker about this and he claims that the State is to blame for the improper dealing of these forests. You did mention environmental restrictions as well. Do you think any of these will change in the wake of this fire?
