"Food stamps programs date back 70 years -- the first was started in 1939 and the idea was revived during the 1960s"

I remember food stamps back when I was a kid then again in the 60's people did not like you knowing they were on food stamps then.  Now they use them with no problem and the pay cash for beer, wine and candy.

Over the course of my life, I knew people who were TEMPORARILY receiving "food stamps" because of a job layoff or some other legitimate reason, and they were ALL embarrassed to have to go to the the grocery store and use the paper food stamps to pay for their groceries.

Nowadays, they have debit card-type things that are loaded with your monthly food stamp allowance.  It makes it more "anonymous" and further removes the "embarrassment" of being on public assistance.

Of course, nowadays too many people consider public assistance (food stamps, housing, medical care, etc.) to be their BIRTHRIGHT.
