A new report claims U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has mostly ceased efforts to enforce laws pertaining to hiring illegal workers in the United States.

According to the Center for Immigration Studies, the number of workplace audits dropped from 3,127 in 2013 to 181 in the first five months of the current fiscal year. Twenty-seven employers have been charged with hiring illegal workers during the current fiscal year, well off pace of the overall 2013 figure of 179.

The final 2014 figures included audits on 1,320 employers, which resulted in 172 arrests

The change has resulted in a drastic reduction in fines collected by the government, from $9.4 million in 2013 to a projected 2015 figure of $4.6 million.

"Robust worksite enforcement programs produce numerous public benefits, including deterring illegal hiring, exposing exploitative workplace conditions and tax violations, punishing unscrupulous employers, uncovering document fraud rings and other criminal activity, and, most importantly, restoring job opportunities for legal workers," the Center for Immigration Studies report reads.

"When considering the allocation of funding for ICE programs, Congress should take care that this critical form of enforcement, which addresses both land crossers and overstayers, is restored to a higher priority."

Earlier this month, the IRS said illegal workers living in the U.S. will be allowed to file for back tax refunds under Obama's immigration orders.

Texas, plagued with immigration problems as migrants cross into the state from Mexico, announced this week it will spend $800 million for border security over the next two years. The Lone Star State will put the money toward a new surveillance airplane, a new crime data center, a training facility, and hiring new law enforcement personnel to keep watch on the border.

Perhaps the way to counter this is to let business in general know that just because enforcement is not robust now doesn't mean they won't be held liable in upcoming audits! Congress should then push through a bill putting a 7 year statute of limitation making them liable for intentional hiring fraud! Knowing they may have to answer to the next AG may make these companies more careful!

I'd like to go back to the 70s and punish that Baskin Robbins in Hawaii for employing that illegal.

But it's the evil Republicans that are for companies hiring cheap immigrant labor or something.

Gosh, what a relief...  Now the government field-toadies don't have to place a warning call to construction-outfits days ahead of a 'surprise' inspection anymore.  When I worked for Houston Lighting & Power, it wasn't unusual to have indie contracting-crews periodically vanish, then miraculously reappear a day later.

Employers can't question anyone's legal status.  When they employ someone, the applicant/new hire has to fill out an I-9 form.  The employer can ask to see the documentation, but they cannot tell a person they are hiring to produce a specific kind of document, or make copies of it without the employees permission.

Well, that certainly makes it easier for the cops trying to track your missing inventory! That I-9 address? A vacant lot.

The implications of this whole deal just leaves me breathless.  The crime rate will soar, the murders and worse will be like none we've seen in our lifetimes.  Thanx Obola!

Exactly.  I can't tell you how many times I received a notice from the IRS or the SS Admin saying they can't match up an employee name to an employee's social security number.  One woman actually gave me a new ss# with a different name on it, than the name and # she had been using.  I suspect there is some place these people can go to buy ss cards and birth certificates, among other documents that are illegal.

Actually there is such a place in my town that the illegals go when they come here to go thru the process, whatever it is.  The location is approx 12 miles from my home just off !-85 and exit #67 (I think that's Fairforest SC)  Buses leave latinos there regularly.  All types of assistance is available to these people, jobs, food stamp registration, housing, and med. alerts and places to get treatment.  I am  not naive enough to think they aren't getting their SS#'s there too and anything else normally required to make it here.

It's fairly easy to acquire fake ID that would fool even the average street officer. The trick is to survive a more detailed check, and a sufficient federal will to actually stop that trade before somebody pairs stolen PIN and account numbers with the real people whose lives suffer when some wetback steals their identity.
