This "civil rights" statute is frequently used by minorities to bring suit against a government agency (such as a police department) alleging violation of the fourteen ammmendment (equal protection/equal treatment) as well as other Constitutional Rights.  It has also been used for such things as filing suit against Town Board members for such things as unfair zone restrictions targeting an individual or group of individuals.

I smell a lawsuit and a big time pay day coming, unless the "oathkeeper" issue was only an incidental charge in addition to more serious charges based upon real evidence of wrongdoing.

There is no shortage of religious hucksterism in my region, but it was the Michigan Militia who turned Hutaree members in, for their radical garbage.

This was the same Michigan Militia who had to clean up its act after the OK City bombing and McVeigh was shown to have been a militia member. In the case of alerting the feds to what Hutaree was saying as a group, they may have redeemed their tarnished image.

But the government can not produce proof that the group actually WOULD have acquired explosives without help from that same informant that (I assume) would be used against them in court. Detroit (read, liberal) judges in the federal circuit are appalled at the scope of backlash they would face in their own liberal community, if they released the defendants on bail, pending trial. It's safer to keep them warehoused and out of the public eye until win, lose or draw, the 2010 elections are history.

I'm glad the child was returned and the public outcry against this nonsense may have helped back off the Child protective agency for their stupidity.

Regarding Huatree, once again, these people are a bunch of idiot losers. ALL THEY DO IS TALK. Yes it is illegal to threaten police officers, however, it is part of the job, every Ghetto rat,redneck biker and two bit crook I ever encountered did the same, as long as all it is is TALK then there is little that can be and should be done except staying alert.

This type of stuff was known as "smoke stacking" in my day, macho bluster from pinheads usually drunk or stoned and talking out their axxes. The real thing, the real deal that you have to worry about is the guys who don't say anything but DO SOMETHING.

That is when the line is crossed, say anything you want but do something or take steps to do it and that is when you need to get smacked down. The Huatree are classic "smoke stackers", losers who couldn't plan a handjob. Treating them like that is making them into more than what they are....the feds are looking for some inflatable bad guy to have a reason to clamp down on the right.

Real dangerous folks, there are plenty of real bad guys around that need to be dealt with so why invent some?
