QuoteHail to the Victors! A group of leaders and best from the University of Michigan exposed a flaw in the District of Columbia's new online absentee voting system.

J. Alex Halderman, a U-M assistant professor of electrical engineering and computer science, testified before the Washington, D.C., City Council's Committee on Government Operations and the Environment last Friday to detail how he and three other Wolverines (along with an assist from a Princeton student) were able to hack into the city's new e-voting operation. City officials asked the public to give the system a test run to work out any possible kinks ahead of time.

Halderman told the council how "within 36 hours of the system going live, we had found and exploited a vulnerability that gave us almost total control of the voting server software, including the ability to change votes and reveal voters' secret ballots."

How they hacked it is all Greek to Insider, but the proof they left behind is pure Michigan.

"To show that we had control of the server we left a 'calling card' on the confirmation screen voters see after voting," Halderman testified. "After 15 seconds, the page played the University of Michigan fight song."
