I ran across this article in the AJC and found it interesting. As a little background Gov. Zell Miller led an effort to have the lottery approved in GA. To get it approved the revenue for the state would go into a fund labeled the HOPE Scholarship Fund. It provides funds for students who have certain GPA and go to an in state college or university. They retain the scholarship as long as they maintain a certain level of success in college. It has been so popular that they need additional funds as the population in GA expands and the scholarship becomes more of an incentive. OTOH, the lotteries in NC and SC are called the "education" lotteries and in my view the funds have been going into a black hole. GA has done a great job with their funds.

I personally think GA would be a very good state for casino gambling. It has the population and some great locations for casinos. I was living in MS when casino gambling was approved there 25-30 years ago. It transformed the Gulf Coast which had been in the doldrums since Camille in 1969. They were smart and just copied the Nevada laws. It provided many stable jobs and the population has increased. In MS the revenues went to the general fund which was a good place for those funds in that less than booming state. In my view horse racing would not be the best option. It is a rich man's sport and under increasing political pressures as we hear more about the animals losing their lives involved with this sport.

I know gambling is a controversial issue with many and I just wanted to hear some other's opinions.

Ca did it, promised the money would go to the schools. They lied, it goes into the General Fund for social programs.

I don't like it.  It's like the global warming scam, unions, etc....  It's a funding mechanism for politicians and corruption.  I did some research on casinos years ago so I can't remember specifics, but I believe there was literally no instance where a casino was great for the local economy or provided anything beneficial.

If the people were in the streets demanding a casino, that's one thing.  However, 100% of the time it's politicians and government corruption making it happen to the detriment of the people.

People are going to gamble one way or another, lots of states have legalized state sposored gamblig "Million dollar" draws etc etc. this is a way for the Govt to gather revenue.

My problem is accountability.   Years ago, staid old Virginia loosened her corset & introduced a State Lottery, scrtch off etc with the promise that "all that money is going into the schools" yeah well for awhile it did, now when no one is looking the leftist scumbags that seized control of the state got their mitts on the candy fund and I strongly suspect the bucks are going towards helping socialist programs for the third world autonomous region of Northern Virginia.

The leftists are against casino's because they cant cotrol them, only tax them, several Indian Tribes tried to open casino's without luck.

Nearby states have casino's West Va, Marylad ad I think .N Carolina

The Cherokees have a big casino complex run by Harrahs in WNC. I think it is doing well as they keep expanding. It helps that it is only a couple of hours from ATL.

I think it was a much better business 20 to 30 years ago when Atlantic City and Las Vegas owned the crowds. The more this gets spread out the more it depends on the food stamp crowd. Sports betting might help but I think they really have to find additional reasons to bring the non-desperate into the casinos.
Have you been to Biloxi lately? Half the cars in the lots are held together with duct tape. I used to like to stay at casino hotels when I traveled even though I am not a gambler. Now they don't need to be cleaned. They need to be leveled.
