Title: New York to scrap literacy test for teachers. Guess why.
Post by: Bronx on March 12, 2017, 11:06:03 AM
It's a damn shame when you give the same test to the teachers as the students and the teachers can't pass it. What does that say for our education system, well N.Y. education system....?

Also when EVERY TEACHER takes the SAME TEST and some fail and some pass what is problem...? Kick to the curb the ones that fail and the ones that pass press on.

Both articles are must read.  I know this is a N.Y. article but I have a strong feeling our education system as a whole in America is not that far off.

New York to scrap literacy test for teachers. Guess why.

Efforts to introduce standardized testing and the monitoring of performance metrics for teachers in New York have been opposed by the teachers unions ever since they were first introduced decades ago. It's an ongoing battle which has been mirrored across the nation. Still, some measures have been put in place which were intended to at least ascertain basic levels of proficiency for people seeking teaching positions. One of these is known as the Academic Skills Literacy Test (ASLT). It's basically a reading comprehension test administered to those who would eventually be giving similar tests to students.

Test Meant To Screen Teachers Instead Weeded Out Minorities

NEW YORK (AP) — New York education officials are poised to scrap a test designed to measure the reading and writing skills of people trying to become teachers, in part because an outsized percentage of black and Hispanic candidates were failing it.

Pitiful! What an indictment of teachers' unions. Another reason why we sacrificed to sent our kids to private schools.

I suppose it shows how worthless a  college education is especially when they push through minorities.

Thomas Sowell once wrote in his column that
every time he publishes an article about incompetent teachers,
he always receives from teachers
numerous letters that prove he was right.

Remember that phrase, "The bigotry of soft expectations"?....  Liberals betrayed at least the present and the previous generation of minorities with that very thinking in education.

What, you mean people had to memorize multiplication tables? Wasn't that child abuse?

Planned Parenthood and stupid teachers for minorities, what better way to control the masses.
Am I the only one here not seeing the truth behind the lefts hidden agenda?

The left is in total panic. The election of Trump is proof the folks are paying more attention. People paying attention is a death penalty for leftists as the true intentions of the left have to remain hidden from the masses.

Once we start dangling a check in front of their faces they can use to educate their children outside of leftist indoctrination centers, there will be an overnight exodus from public schools.
I know that's not the Conservative way, but sometimes you have to use the enemy's tactics against them, and this one is a voucher check worth more than the education itself.
Let's say we spend 50 thousand per student per year, give that money to the parents, tell them there are certain laws they have to follow pertaining to their children, be it home school or group schooling to private school, but at the end of the school year if these requirements have been met, they get to keep what was left over.

This is how the left took over the education system, so lets steal it back.

Per-student spending varies greatly from state to state, with New Yawk being highest at a little over $20K per student, down to Utah with a per-student price of $6500.
http://www.governing.com/gov-data/education-data/state-education-spending-per-pupil-data.html
Couple of data points worth mentioning. District of Criminals per-student spending is second place, behind NY, but administrative spending as a percentage of the total is significantly above what other districts spend. (Imagine that.)

Another item is that Alaska is third for per-student spending. But I suppose much of that can be attributed to cost of living up there. I was surprised to find Wyoming i 7th place, though.

I tried to find reliable data on student performance by state, but the data sets, released by the public education system, were so biased it was not possible to really find how well student are doing compared to the amounts being spent.

Anyway, point being we could get away with a lot less than $50K per student for a voucher system. I don't know about "dangling a check", but if we give parents full control over which school receives their students' education allotment, we will see a vast and immediate change for the better in all schools, public and private. Make schools compete for clients, and they HAVE to find ways to improve, or go under.

It is a simple principle: competition makes people try harder, no matter what the endeavor.  (A principle Progs totally ignore/deny in their pursuit of what they call "equality.")

The 50K was an arbitrary number rounded off, especially when one considers the hidden costs involved, like the school lunch program, where 95% of Ca students qualify, a subsidy not included in the 9% Fed allotment.
School supplies, transportation, after school activities designed to babysit. There are other hidden costs affiliated with welfare that adds to the bill. Granted I'm talking about Ca, but I can only imagine other states are doing it too, after all, it's not their money, it's the Feds.

The federal government provides just 9 percent of education funds, compared to 44 percent from local sources and 47 percent from states. (Very outdated numbers by the way)

Yesterday I was looking up my old elementary and Jr high schools, and no surprise, I found they are at the bottom ranking.
Check out the Jr High I went to back in the 60s. And no, our scores were in the upper average range for the state and national numbers, obviously that's no longer the case thanks to Marxists, starting with LBJ.
I kid you not, if this were a patient in the hospital, they'd pull the plug.
And yes, I sat waiting, thinking the page hadn't loaded yet. Oh, and look at the race break down.

Proposed numbers for 2000 around 50 thousand dollars per.

Oh, and here's my elementary school. The area is full of Mexicans, Hmong and Blacks, but blacks are bailing on the area as well.

Uncalled for.

How is it uncalled for? I assume all the teachers tested got a degree from some  college somewhere and  it appears blacks and  hispanics are failing the test  in much larger numbers than whites even though they all have college degrees.

This is from the article provided by the OP.

"NEW YORK (AP) — New York education officials are poised to scrap a test designed to measure the reading and writing skills of people trying to become teachers, in part because an outsized percentage of black and Hispanic candidates were failing it."

If they have the same degree as white teachers you tell me why they are failing the test  in far higher  numbers?

I was on the fence as to whether or not I wanted to weigh in on this.

If ldub23 meant to say that minorities are stupid, then it was uncalled for.

But if ldub23 meant to say that affirmative action is evil
because it deliberately chooses to
not weed out the incompetent ones because they're minorities,
(which I think is probably what he meant)
then the comment is valid.

in the 60's, 70's and 80's New York school systems were some of the best in the country. Their SUNNY collage system was top rank! It is a real shame to see what the Libs have done to that state!

Some figures were published about the Cincinnati Public Schools.
Comparing 1955 with 1985, they had the same number of students.
Comparing 1955 with 1985, they had the same number of teachers.
Comparing 1955 with 1985, they had ten times the number of administrators!

I dont think its a big secret minorities get pushed into colleges due to set asides based on race and this  is the result.
