I am more and more convinced that the GOP likes to talk like they are determined to cut the size of government and taxes but has no commitment to what they say.  In earlier posts it was said there is little difference between R & D and that the R's are concerned with pleasing the press.  I think the first part is more true than the media wants you to believe and I think the second part is how the R's have found a way to cave in on making cuts and reducing the size of govt.

Pretend to fight and then cave in citing that to stay the course the party would be ruined in the media.  I think we all know that not matter what the GOP does the media will turn it into a bad thing.   Vote against Dems they are obstructionists or racists.  Vote with the Dem party and they are showing how the GOP is falling apart and has no unity.  The media is already stirring the pot about the battle that is coming in just a few weeks.  Even saying that Obama has to be careful.   All just to set the table.  GOP will cave and the media will love it.  Then they can say that it was a work of art the way Obama used his skilful diplomacy to get his way.

I hope in 8 weeks I look back and think OMG the GOP used good strategy and held strong to get an agreement that is best for this country.  I want to be one of those who have to say I got it totally wrong.

At this moment I think the debt ceiling goes through with no tax cuts because the D's say that it is up to the R's to put in the cuts that they want.  Afraid to be at the front on cutting anything they cave in and say that they will really stick to their guns during the sequestration debate.

I agree with your proposed outcome, but not with the reason.

The dems have a simple message on the debt ceiling that goes something like ... "You decide to cut budgets when deciding what to spend, not when the bill comes in."

It's hard to be the fiscally responsible party when the other side can paint you as the party not wanting to pay their bills.

Obama just gave a speech talking about how he will not negotiate and how irresponsible the GOP would be if they did not raise the debt ceiling.  I am sure they will cave and yes they will use the same logic as Obama and claim that this is not the time for discussion as the bills need to be paid.

They should only pass a bill that is high enough for a month or two.  Have this discussion every week.  Pass it but maybe if some of the Dems pay attention to how much we are borrowing every month they might get a clue that it is out of control.
