So, what are we doing for Memorial Day?  Bar-B-Q on the patio?  Picnic in the park?  Take in a ball game?  Just veg in the lazy-boy?

There are those who appreciate the meaning of Memorial Day more keenly than others.

Every day I breathe free is a day I owe to someone buried here.

The HOA here is hosting a BBQ for all the veterans on Monday. They collected service information from those that wanted to participate and are publishing a booklet with the vets data and picture.

It is the Soldier, not the minister
Who has given us freedom of religion.
It is the Soldier, not the reporter
Who has given us freedom of the press.
It is the Soldier, not the poet
Who has given us freedom of speech.
It is the Soldier, not the campus organizer
Who has given us freedom to protest.
It is the Soldier, not the lawyer
Who has given us the right to a fair trial.
It is the Soldier, not the politician
Who has given us the right to vote.
It is the Soldier who salutes the flag,
Who serves beneath the flag,
And whose coffin is draped by the flag,
Who allows the protester to burn the flag.

Thank You. That's more than 99.9% of the people in this country are doing to commemorate those that made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation.

As I live less the 80 miles away now.  I will be placing flowers on both of my Grandfather and father grave markers.   As I have done for the last 5 years living on the side of the state.  All three rest in Pendleton Oregon.

Relaxing with my husband all weekend.  My church always does something in rememberance of  all those that gave the ultimate sacrifice, not only related to people of my church but all those everywhere who have done so.  Also a tribute to living veterans of our assembly.

I would like to offer this reflection from Warner Press.

"A Soldier Died Today"

He was getting old and paunchy and his hair was falling out fast, and he sat around the Legion Hall, telling stories of the past, of a war he once fought in and the deeds that he had done, in his exploits with his buddies, they were heroes every one.  And though sometimes to his neighbors his tales became a joke, all his buddies listened quietly, for they knew where of he spoke.  But we'll hear his tales no longer, for ole' Bob has passed away, and the world's a little poorer for a soldier died today.  He won't be mourned by many, just his children and his wife, for he lived a very ordinary, very quiet sort of life.  He held a job and raised a family, going quietly along his way, and the world won't note his passing, though a soldier died today.

When politicians leave this earth, their bodies lie in state, while thousands mourn their passing and proclaim that they were great.  Papers tell their life stories from the time that they were young, but the passing of a soldier goes unnoticed and unsung.

Is the greatest contribution to the welfare of our land, some jerk that breaks his promise and cons his fellow man?

Or, is it the ordinary fellow, who in times of war and strife, goes off to serve his country and offers up his life?

The politician's stipend and the style in which he lives, are often disproportionate to the service that he gives, while the ordinary soldier, who offered up his all, is paid off with a medal and perhaps a pension small.

It's so easy to forget them, for it is so many times, that our Bobs and Jims and Johnny's went to battle, this we know.

It is not the politicians with their compromise and ploys, who won for us the freedom that our country now enjoys.

Should you find yourself in danger, with your enemies at hand, would you want some cop-out with his ever-waffling stand?  Or would you want a soldier....his home, his country, his kin, just a common soldier who would fight until the end?

He was just a common soldier and his ranks are growing thin, but his presence should remind us we might need his likes again.  For when countries are in conflict, we find the soldier's part, is to clean up all the troubles that the politicians start.  If we cannot do him honor while he's here for us to praise, then at least let's give him homage at the ending of his days.  Perhaps just a simple headline in the paper that might say:

OUR COUNTRY IS IN MOURNING, A SOLDIER DIED TODAY

May God Bless all of you on this forum who willingly served your country.  Thank you!
