McDs sued for not serving halal food

I was not sure if I should put this here, or the religion forum.

Dearborn MI has one of the highest populations of Muslims in the US.  McDonald's there offered to prepare certain foods according to Muslim requirements (halal).  The complaintant alleged that he was served a non-halal chicken sandwich, and sued 2 of the stores.  He won because MDs settled.

So what are your thoughts on this?  Part of me says, if they are dumb enough to promise such foolishness, they deserve it.  Another side of me says, you can't even trust MDs to make regular menu items consistently, if your salvation depends on properly prepared food, perhaps that particular establishment should be avoided.

My thoughts are if you don;t like it do buy and don't eat it. There is NO requirement for a resturaunt to carry certain types of food.

They shouldn't win....but in this day an age you never know what some idit judge will rule.

I hate to say it, but once business owners of bars and restaurants allowed government to ban smoking, they gave away the farm.

Salt and transfats are regulated in NYC.

I could see this becoming some crazy hate crime.

Lesson learned: Don't let the government get their foot in the door. If McDs promised to make special food for them; they shouldn't have.

I dont see any obligation, public or private, to accede to any Religious based demands.  Peroid.

I have a feeling it was a muscum owned MickeyDs, and the owner wanted to increase traffic, and failed miserably, now he has to face the consequences.

Maybe, but it also looks like a catch 22. They can't deny service to anyone, based on religion...........so are they obligated to serve special food for them?

All of this government imposed togetherness is really starting to suck!

It's barely food  to begin with. Since when does a private business have to cater to a specific demographic?

I am not sure they do, but they said they would, and therein is the problem.  The other problem is that this case is completely one persons word against the word of the business.

So here is another question, if they did run out of the specially prepared foods, and refused service for that reason, would they have been sued anyway?

Yawn

I work withing sight of that Beautiful Abomination.

McDonalds shouldn't make promises they can't keep. They serve a large Muslim population there. They were fined because they lied--just like with the french fry issue a few years ago.

I went to that McDonalds on Monday. It's the only McDonalds I've ever been to where I was waited on by a young woman in covered with a scarf--a very pretty Muslim woman.

Cryptic Bert

The last thing they want is a woman in a scarf working the fryer...

Yes. They weren't FORCED to prepare food that way. They did it for BUSINESS--to gain the large Muslim population.

QuoteFor food products to be billed as halal, they have to be prepared according to strict Islamic dietary laws. The criteria specifies which foods are allowed (pork, for example, is forbidden) as well as how the food must be prepared. If God's name isn't invoked before an animal is slaughtered, no dice. http://newyork.grubstreet.com/2013/01/mcdonalds-lawsuit-halal-food.html

Thank you for saying this! It makes me wonder who actually read the story before jumping on it. If a restaurant says they will adhere to these restrictions, and then completely go against it, they deserve to loose some of their billions. No one forced MD's to make that offer, they didn't all on their own, and now they get to pay for lying. I'm cool with that.

I did not read it closley enough. Obviously.  Having now done so, McDs crime is false advertising.  If they advertise certain menu items as Halal, they should do as advertised or suffer the consequences.
