Mitt Romney hasn't even officially announced his candidacy for U.S. Senate, yet Republican leadership is already seeing stars.
While the entire Senate GOP conference votes for leadership positions after election day, it's widely known that Majority Leader Mitch McConnell effectively dictates the results. And there is reason to believe McConnell might be on board.
According to two Republicans close to Romney, who requested anonymity to describe private conversations, McConnell assured the former presidential nominee last year that if he ran for Senate he would have more influence than the typical junior Senator. "I was not on any Gardner calls yesterday and am therefore unaware of any conversations he may have had," said a spokesperson for McConnell.
"Mitt becoming Senator Mitt Romney and chairman of the NRSC elevates Trump's biggest intra-party foe," the Republican donor said. "This is not the outcome Trump wanted when he encouraged Hatch to run again." (The donor added that Gardner did not discuss in the call what Trump's reaction might be.)

There is no guarantee that the Con will be in any position to appoint another rino to anything. He is assuming quite a lot.

We've seen Mitten debate, she could expose his dislike of real Conservatism and how he supports McCON-nels Establishment goals and Utah would pprobably pay to move him back to lib land.
She could kill Mitten in a debate, just keep focusing on his big govt acheivments like authoring Commiecare.
Seriously, he did a great job on the Olympics, but in comparison, that is a big govt acheivment kind of thing and much of Utah is rural, so it would be easy to expose all his accomplishments as bereaucratic in nature, micromanaging govt and peoples lives.
She could focus on smaller govt, explain how she will get it out of the way of Utah's business community, that Mitten would simply bring big govt headaches to smaller communities in Utah, forcing them to pay more in taxes because city dwellers will be the recipients of his agenda, not the rural communities.
What McCon sees as a positive, she could easily turn into a negative, a Big East coaster invading Utah with Bif City/Govt ideas.
