Duane Hammond says it's what got him fired.  Hammond is a union stagehand who was part of the crew that built the platform for the Obama event on campus.

He came to work early this morning wearing clothing that says "George H. W. Bush".   Hammond's son is in the Navy, currently serving on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. George H. W. Bush.

Hammond says he was not trying to make a political statement.  He says he got the sweatshirt and hat during a visit to the aircraft carrier on Family Day.  The back of his sweatshirt has a large drawing of the ship.

He says he wore it to show how proud he is of his son. Bush2

That didn't go over well with his union supervisor.  Hammond says he was told to take off the sweatshirt, or he would have to go home.

He refused.  They told him he was fired from the job.

James Wright, a business representative from IATSE Local 33, says the union is still investigating what happened.

"If he was sent home because of the sweatshirt, he will be paid for the day," he said.

***UPDATE:   Duane Hammond says union officials called him this afternoon to apologize for the incident.  He say they are "bending over backwards" to make it up to him.

As it happened, I read the story BEFORE signing in here, tonight, and then saw Solar's invite in the Comments section, inviting "cons" and liberals alike into our fold. Any of you folks happen to read this, welcome aboard.

As for the shirt, guilt by association is PLENTY of reason to suppress freedom of speech. Ask the liberals now going after Jody Foster because she's refused to play Politically Correct and renounce her longtime friend Mel Gibson. (They loved her as a victim with Hinckley, and as a lesbian, but noooooo, not now that she knows a Hollywood pariah.)

This week, some 400-pound welfare heifer was turned away from voting, for wearing an Obama T-shirt, in one state where early polling is underway. She was CONVINCED that the law was being applied unfairly. In another state a judge allowed someone to vote while wearing a Tea Party shirt, but put it on review for after the election. It kindasortamaybe evens out.

Union rats have reason to object to that ship's T-shirt. They will NOT get a job building such a vessel for the Muslim-in-Chief. But to deny a proud father the right to wear a gift shirt? That's worse than union solidarity. That's brain-dead anti-American trash.

I wonder where Bill Clinton's naval vessel is.  My guess is that he'll have a submarine named after him.............the cigar shape is PERFECT.  ;D

I believe that Jimmy Carter's naval namesake is an inflatable dinghy kept in a storage locker on the USS Ronald Reagan aircraft carrier.  ;D
