Life Along The Mississippi

If you look at election results on counties along/near the Mississippi River from Memphis to the Gulf, the dems do quite well. That is no shock as these counties have large or majority black populations.

But the dems also do quite well along the river north of St. Louis. What gives? These counties have tiny black populations.  I think I first noticed this in the 2000 election. Anyone here live along the north part of the river?
